This is not an endorsement to any specific fuel system additive designed to remove water. I chose the HEET product for this video because it seems to be the most recognizable water removal product here in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin.
Any fuel system additive designed to remove water SHOULD work and some may work better than others, but experience tells me nothing absorbs more water than Ethanol-blended fuel. Perhaps this is why leaving it in equipment longer than 30 days causes the trouble it does; for better or worse, it's great at absorbing water.
Remember, no fuel system additive magically "removes water" from fuel. Alcohol simply bonds with both water and gasoline up to the limits of phase separation. Meaning, if there's a lot of water in the fuel system and you manage to add enough alcohol to absorb it, the engine still has to choke down this cocktail, which may not be the best plan. That's why its best to start by draining the contaminated fuel.
