  • In this video, I break down what aspiring writers can learn from Billy Woods and Moor Mother's masterpiece "Scary Hours" off their album "Brass". Enjoy!
This was a really fun track and album to cover, however this stuff is so dense that it's by no means a complete breakdown of everything going on in the track and on the album. I'd need like 3 hours and twice the amount of time for research to do that. But, that's what the comment section is for so we can keep the conversation regarding this album going down there.
Definitely drop your takes on the album in the comment section!

This goes to show how important knowledge is when writing; and with creativity in general. If you want to be a writer, you must be well read too.

Yep that’s something I’m def learning currently. Artists like these two really make me realize how limited my frame of reference can be when writing 😭

It’s so hard to put down like you said because it’s so dense but endeavoring to do that I’ve acquired the taste for the way the album sounds so hard. I think that’s so amazing because it’s like there making so if you really want to get everything they say you’ll have to love the sound of it

This is a very cool video, but you are missing moor mother’s entire philosophy which rejects the basic idea of linear temporality and the “past present and future”you reference. Her line “mastered by the clock” is about how the language and structure of linear temporality and development contributes to oppression and hegemony

Look up “black quantum futurism”, which is her collaboration with another thinker and activist for info about her ideas

this is a GREAT point. I was vaguely aware of black quantum futurism but did not at all think of it as I put together my video. thanks for mentioning and providing more perspective!!@@maxjepsen3114

The problem with Woods, mumble rappers and fast rappers are the understanding. If your message so fucking abstract it's like mumble rap or speed rap. The meaning means nothing. "Writing at Woods level"......idk man MF DOOM is literally one of the most prolific artist and while he makes you think his music wasn't all over the place. Even throughout the video you aren't sure of the actual main themes or topics for the album. Some think Moor Mother is saying "this". How is music like this not comparable to bullshit like fast rap or mumble rap???? Its just fucking words and you have to sit there and read it and your even more confused and its clearly not just me or the guy making the video. Whole ass videos and comments on this album and other Woods albums have been completed and it's nonsense to the point where Woods even says in one of his interviews with the needle drop that people get it wrong.
Personally I think Woods just take basic concepts he believes in and then uses historical references. I think Woods focuses on "lines of thought" and no one song has any real meaning at all. It's just a theme of words and different concepts. He will talk about communism, slavery, racial issues and money all in one song in different ways with no clear theme whatsoever.
Also comparing MLK to fucking 2Pac is stupid. 2Pac was killed on some stupid gang shit. Woods constantly has all these "issues" with America and capitalism but yet yields and lives off of the fruit it provides which by definition is hypocritical.
