Big ups.
thanks
Woods' music hits like a novel, the gravity of its emotion, the incisivenes of its social commentary, the lopsided rhyme schemes, it just swallows me whole
Almost more like dense philosophy to me. It seems to get more intense with each listen in a way, as the layers of meaning are slowly pulled back.
the breadth of subject matter he speaks about in his music, is second to none
Well said
ayyyyoooooo
Pause
I'll never get over how dope of a line "spliff could probably jump your whole car battery" is
blurred the face 💪
You know how I feel
With DOOM gone I dunno if anyone currently operating can hang in contention with woods at the top of the pile... For me anyway, he's just a cut above. Kenny absolutely brings a different fire out of him as well across their two collabs. Great to see KEXP giving them well deserved time to shine.
No caps when you spell the man's name. 😂😂
@@justsid damn autocorrect 🤦🏻♂️😅
The only other one for me is KA. billy is operating on a scary level!
don't forget about KA
I predict BBNG will be contributing to the latest Armand Hammer album along with Kenny Segal and Alc.
Genuinely think Billy Woods may be one of the most underrated musicians of all time, Known Unknowns is a masterpiece
It's actually insane how underrated he is given he's the best rapper to ever do it.
All of his albums are masterpieces. You’re underrating him yourself for singling out an album of his from 10 years ago when he’s dropped equally perfect albums since.
@@lesryglrhfohser I've listened to em all, man, loved every one (Terror Management is a 2nd) but Known Unknowns is still top place for me, every song is a classic and Blockhead's production has never been better
Personally, I think he’s possibly the best rapper right now. The run he’s been on since Hiding Places is unmatched, if you include his work with Armand Hammer. Incredible talent and artistic genius.
Between that and Maps two of my favorite hip hop albums.
Soft Landing is such a ridiculously powerful song
"A single death is a tragedy, but eggs make omelets"
I don't go to sleep I tread water til I sink
"Killing is one thing but what sticks is how casually"
@@isolationsquire yeah that line blew me away
"other people determine your identity and then use that to say who they are" ... I had to pause the video after that line. Great point
Just say hes the best
I saw Billy Woods & Kenny Segal live in London. Great show. I could not see his face lol. The people running the light did an excellent job.
Was funny when he offered the light guy a permanent job after the show
@@arru23😂😂 Facts.
The sound was also on point at the London show 🔥
@@liamwarren6811 Defo and the opening acts were top notch
Done my back in and couldn’t make the show. Gotta catch him next time.
Discovered this artist, Mr. Billy Woods, by purchasing a childrens book called A is for Anarchist, by Billy Woods. What a gem 💎 ✨️
Segal’s interlude between Bad Dreams and FaceTime needs to be its own track. I’d be listening to that all the time. So elegant, cool, dreamlike, moody.
Hard agree
on the deluxe edition theres a version of bad dreams with serengeti on that interlude part including an extra verse from woods, you can also find it on youtube as bad dreams are more than dreams
He’s a genius
@@dikkegaap2150 thank you for the heads up on this!!
billy woods and kenny segal, one of the best rapper producer combos of all time. hiding places and maps are both mind-blowing
Currently, the rapper with the greatest run of projects in recent years
Love the fact that he is rocking the Zimbabwean bird on his tee
Yo fellow Zim billy woods fan. Madii

So happy this dude’s starting to really get his flowers. No one is more deserving. Dude’s label roster is untouchable as well.
yes!! my love, my life, underground hip hop, nothing in the world is better.
Kenny segal's discography is just amazing. If you like instrumentals you have a good dictionnary
THAT KENNY INTERLUDE ON THE TOY SAMPLER WAS FIRE!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone know it ?
Been waiting for this... Woods one of the best over the past decade
That second verse on FaceTime is insane storytelling
Hearing billy talk so eloquently about identity and race reveals the amount of thought and curiosity that sit behind his dense lyrical poetry.
I knew this KEXP set would be awesome (always on point with the audio quality and visuals & woods & Segal is a HELL of a combo) but I am so happy to hear woods writing given such respect and truly insightful questions. From a drunk, stoned and excited Brit, THANK YOU KEXP, woods & Segal!
I always love how much fun woods sounds like he's having in some of his raps, and you can really hear it even more live
and i'd say for about half of them he sounds like he's in intense pain or at least angry as fuck.
@@thehongkongbong Faccs
@@thehongkongbongmeans he really knows what he raps about and i love him for that
ZIMBABWE!!!!! Billy Woods represent represent.
THESE DUDES IS JUST TWO REASONS WHY I "BUY" MY MUSIC. NO DOWNLOADING, NO CD'S....WAX ONLY. SALUTE TO WOODS AND KENNY!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHEN YOU'RE INTO A LOT OF GENRES YOUR CREATIVITY GOES EVERYWHERE PEOPLE.... GALAXIES OF MUSIC WILL BE YOUR CANVAS....YA DIG?
Unbelievably talented
KEXP have to be the best rock radio station for having Billy on. Very few people would do this. Fuck yes. I let out the biggest "yoooo" when I saw this. This man's music should get the pulitzer prize for literature.
This is one of the few times i feel proud to be Zimbabwean. I hope one day we can actually get ppl who appreciate music behind award shows. This man should have 20 grammys by now
yeah but if he had 20 grammies he wouldn't be the "music behind the award show". he'd be the award show.
real artists don't need meaningless statues to validate their artwork.
@@MrGrunge88 he doesnt need or require them but it be kinda nice to see someone so talented finally get looked at and appreciated by a mainstream audience because of his contributions to rap
Zimbabwe have Andy Flower. One of the greatest cricketers to ever live.
Thanks for that KEXP. Billy Woods is amazing.
I do often describe Woods to people as a novelist that raps. Feels stupid typing that out but his lyrics are so easy to get lost in, falling down the spiderhole.
Such a perfect description
Kenny is on another level rn with that production man he is perfect
Yoooo I never thought I’d see this. Hell yeah, the best in the game. Period.
As a metal and indiehead, ive loved KEXP. Now with Billy Woods on .... Damn. This is incredible . I got that Pigsx7 records store day press and would love one of this session!
I'm gonna hit the Like first, and then the Play button
Amazing chemistry between these two, one of my favorite albums from this year, I can't wait for this new Armand Hammer stuff
Reppin Zimbabwe on the t-shirt!!!!
Such a fantastic and fascinating interview. Already loved and respected woods but this was so illuminating. What a great human being
I guess the line "you're not gonna find a nicer group of guys,
Even if things get mean the bud was kind" is true
Known Unknowns, Hiding Places, Maps, Aethiopes. All Alluring and haunting, unapologetically human albums. Everything he says is so dense yet I feel like I have felt everything he has said. No other artist has done this for me. Him and Aesop should do an album together, every song they have done has been a banger. With Aes's goofy self deprecation tied in with Wood's harsh realities, I think it would make something beautiful. And if Segal was at the helm, I think it would be a timeless album.
As a huge fan of both of them, I’ve thought about that before, but I always have one reservation. Aesop is at his best when thoroughly examining himself, and woods is at his best thoroughly examining the rest of the world. It’s a tough middle ground to pull off. However, it’s nowhere as tough an overlap as The Uncluded, and they made that work really well.
When do they colab it's usually always bangers
Waiting around one of my fav hip hop tracks this year, Aesop verse on it probably verse of the year for me
Flawless Woods and Segal. Two of the best in hip hop
HERE AS A FAN FROM SOUTH AFRICA, LOVE YOUR MUSIC BILLY ⛽
How have I never found this before?!?
Man i love billy so much. Wish i could live in US to see him
FANTASTIC ALBUM! ONE OF 2023'S BEST
I cant help but laugh sometimes when I hear his bars. Theyre so concise and still convey so much specific emotion. I cant even figure out a way to describe it it's just like yeah damn. How the fuck did you just do that?
alarm clocks break spells
crashed out, search for my own black box in the hills
@@hypochondriac1 if I taught Literature or English, I'd definitely have students dissect his lyrics. It is such poignant writing
so great, Woods is a phenomenal artist
wasn't expecting the long, thoughtful, and interesting interview as well
he and kenny did a really long interview with professor Skye, check that out if you want more
Soft landing gotta be my fav on this record. In my head alot, you know how i feel?
39:00 Billy Woods and Kenny Segal are my favorite artists
Man it’s a treat to see them perform these songs in a high quality video. Such a brilliant artist.
a must listen/see show
Best KEXP interview ever
FaceTime is genuinely one of his best songs ever. Well, at least, its one of my favorites. Its so good.
Need to see billy live again. Had the privilege of seeing Armand Hammer and Injury Reserve on a small tour in Durham last summer, which was incredible, but he's dropped so much music since then.
I thought Injury Reserve was By Storm
@@bluesnoopz at that time they were still Injury Reserve, despite only touring as Richie and Parker. The name change came a little later after I caught that show.
I saw billy live a few weeks ago and NO ONE commands a stage like that guy. Generational great! And Kenny is in the top 5 Hip Hop producers alive! (IMO)
This is such a treat to see him live like this! Truly one of the most underrated musicians of all time.
AgreE
Insightful interview, and great performance, love Billy Woods.
Well this 🔥
you guys make hip hop in another level, thanks so much, shout out from Brazil!
I've been a fan since his appearances on "Megagraphitti" "History Will Absolve Me" showed up in 2012 and I haven't looked back.
FINALLY!!!! Woods 🐐🐐🐐
gotta be thankful
Cool that he did something like this. Somebody already was asking whether or not he may do a tiny desk NPR performance one day. This is as close as we have gotten thus far.
New record is fantastic but im heartbroken he didnt do a session during Aethiopes 😢
Mannnn. That would have hit DIFFERENT
Fantastic interview
To Billy Woods and Kenny Segal, thank you both for sharing your talents, truths, knowledge, and perspectives with us all. You guys make a real and honest difference in the world.
To KEXP, yall have outdone yourselves once again in recognizing realness. Cannot thank everyone enough! Love to all ❤
i want more!!!!
A GUY AT "UNDERGROUND HIP HOP" BACK A WHILE IN BOSTON TOLD ME ABOUT THE PRODUCER KENNY. AND TOLD ME HE WAS DOPE...I SLEPT TOO LONG AND HERE HE IS. THANKS. REST IN BEATS UHH!!!!!!!!!!
their record's one of the best of the year for sure
I'm am beyond excited about this
KEXP stays killing it!
Hell yeah, finally billy woods and Kenny Segal on KEXP!!
WE NEED MUCH MORE LEVEL HEADED INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET SUCH AS THIS DUDE RIGHT ABOUT ALWAYS NOW. ESPECIALLY BLACK ONES.
Saw Billy Woods at Tauron Nowa Muzyka at Katowice, Poland, couple of weeks ago. Amazing show, would like to personally thank for that. And Billy Woods, what struck me, was the only artist out of 5 shows i saw, that actually thanked after the gig all the guys who were doing the lights and support - that was super nice.
Saw Woods this weekend Friday and Saturday. Y’all need to see this dude perform if you have a chance! I highly recommend it one of my favorite rappers I ever seen.
So stellar
FKN GOOOOOD ❤❤❤
