Rest In Peace Greg and Jimmy.
This fight made clear why Page was no second coming of Ali.
Jimmy was one of my favorite fighters back then, so I was really looking forward to this fight when it happened. Young had a winning streak going and was named 1981's comeback fighter of the year....he had even gotten his weight back down to 216 during the streak. Young certainly was in disappointing shape for this fight (even in shape he probably doesn't beat Page) But, I was hoping, and there was talk of a possible fight against Holmes. (Holmes obviously would have preferred fighting Young over Page) For me as a Young fan, it would have been nice to see him get another title shot, but Holmes surely would have dominated an aging Young at this point in his career..
As much as I like, respect and appreciate both Jimmy Young and Greg Page, I have to say that Larry Holmes was simply on a much higher level in terms of skill and determination. He had more power than both men and would beat them but they'd give him a run for his money. All three are underrated. Jimmy Young is possibly the most robbed heavyweight in history. Larry Holmes also never got the credit that he deserved and he got robbed a couple of times as well. Greg Page, with his talent, could've done a lot more. Kinda reminds me of what Carl Williams and Tony Tubbs could've been.
@@Charismaniac Totally agree! Holmes was/is so underrated...in his prime I believe that he gives any heavyweight, from any era A LOT of problems. Page I agree could have been much more. Carl The Truth, he had a lot of talent as well, but didn't have the chin that Holmes and Page had. To me, a guy like Razor Ruddick (if he could have controlled his "all-out" style) would have done much better in the 70's-80's, but instead he ran into Tyson in the 90's.
@@Charismaniac Agree that Holmes would have beat both fighters handily. People seem to forget Larry a lot, when he was probably one of the five best heavyweight fighters in history. He just won fight after fight after fight, no matter who they put in there against him.
@@PhilAndersonOutside True. Larry is a heavyweight boss.
@@CharismaniacJimmy Young who fought Ali, beat Lyle and Foreman and arguably outpointed Norton would be a serious problem even for prime Larry Holmes, after Norton Jimmy was done as a fighter, he was robbed many times and lost love for the sport..
Sad endings for both of them. Greg wanted to be the next Ali, but there were so many distractions in his career and life that just derailed him.
I honestly think after Greg's father passed away, he lost something. It was right after Greg beat Marty Monroe. While Greg still won fights after that, often on talent alone, he was never consistent.
After the Norton fight, Jimmy had given up feeling good about the fight game...this is a result.
Very true...the decision loss to Norton changed his attitude for sure. He showed up really out of shape for his next fight against Ocasio (even though he was still in line for a potential title shot) and that loss was the where his time as a contender pretty much ended.
@@flipurtop Sad he gave up...he was ony 29 at time... He could still have become champion and /or box at world level for around 10 years...
@@ivanodvajati3967 They robbed him too many times. He was a very kind, modest and humble individual. The dude had all the manners and was simply not appreciated enough for his skill and ability to perform extremely well against the best. He didn't have the right promoters and his talent went to waste. Eventually, depression and drug abuse got to him. Both him and Greg page are deceased. May they rest in peace.
He became an opponent
@@flipurtop he lost to Ocasio back to back
Too bad nobody has the shavers vs Young fights
Yes. I want to see that too! Same as bonavena vs lyle
Jimmy Young couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag, but boy was he slick.
Give Jimmy Young some credit for punching power, the guy was always think defense. Watch his fight with Norton, first 10 rds usual Jimmy Young fighting backing up, can't get much power that way, after 10th he started planting his feet & loading up, Norton felt that power.
Knocked George Foreman down though !
@@serenityinside1and won on a tko, Foreman simultaneously grabbed the rope while his knee touched the canvass
GOD BLESS BOTH JIMMY YOUNG AND GREG PAGE - - BOTH ARE UP THERE IN HEAVEN - -
I recall overhearing someone offer an analogy on this fight. He said something about Muhammad Ali fighting a younger version of himself.
I can't believe Jimmy Young still fought after Cooney massacred him.
greg a way more advanced ali
Page seemed to be toooq quick for him
Page should have been the second coming of Ali and he could have been if he was more disciplined
it's a damn shame Jimmy young never won a championship belt I don't think I don't remember recall so if anyone out there know about that get back with Craig Finley peace
They can can slate jimmy ss much as they like.apart from ducking the ropes in his ali fight.young at his best could outbox most ov the top 70s heavyweights.and hold his own with the best.
My asked jimmy young available in fight night round 4
why are people saying Young fights like Ali? he's a purely defensive/countering fighter and his style was often irritating to watch.
Irritating is in the eye of the beholder...I thought he was brilliant.
who do you really think wonthe fight between Ali Jimmy young honestly somebody give me a reply back
@@lordburlap4514 who do you really think won the fight between Ali Jimmy Young honestly tell me what you think get back with me
Jimmy young whip George Foreman the same way Ali beat George Foreman waited to the lateral rails with George Foreman always tired out with George Foreman trained he didn't do much running at all that's why he couldn't last laid around all you had to do was just take George into he be wore out that's what you take it to him and Whipple in training all he did was just hit the heavy bag real hard he didn't run he tired so fast April you can take it to but don't try to slug with him early cuz that's when he's powerful
Gimme he was drug user that's why he beat for ali and George Forman
Two imitation Ali
Jimmy Young was not an Ali imitator, his style was solely defensive, boring, and often cheap while Ali's was smooth, poetic, and quick.
@@supra1722 man, Jimmy was a beauty to watch too. You don't have to choose, both styles are completly diffrent. Plus the basics of young are much stronger than ali.
@@emzid5105 Young gab a better foundamentals, agree.
Young was better fundamentally. In his prime, he could slip punches better than the Ali off his layoff. Fundamentally he was better.
However Ali could hit harder, his chin was better (Young still had a great chin). And when Ali was on form was quicker than Young.
Both could slip, take punches, block , clinch. Ali just danced and hit quicker, harder and was tougher and would always come bk.
Young was more cautious. Always looking for opportunities. He was a chess master at fighting.
He's much slower here though than he was in his prime. And judging by his speech after he fought Cooney gradually stuttered.
Sad coz he seemed a decent man. He was a very underated fighter. R.i.p Jimmy the best fundamentally in terms of fundamentals of the golden era.
R.i.p champion
Oooouuuuh
Young fights was often irritating to watch
Fantastic boxer dude. Irrating for average people, not real boxing fans.
@@emzid5105 I’m a real boxing fan and agree with amine. Good boxers can be irritating as hell. Just cause you don’t find him frustrating doesn’t mean your’re qualified. Mayweather was irritating as hell sometimes and he was one of the greats.
@@jrayner21679 You're right my friend. We all have differents points of views and i respect yours. It's a matter of taste. Young, for me, is one of the greatest fighters ever but the boxing buisness killed his career because he was almost impossible to hit cleanly and had very poor record in term of knock outs. Not a good combination to sell fights and tickets. But man he was so slick, and so clever !
@@emzid5105 as a purist i agree with you. He was crafty and slick. As a heavyweight if you don’t pack some punch it’s hard to keep people interested is all.
Ali hit harder than Young, was quicker of foot and hands, but by the time they fought. Jimmy was in better shape than Ali and countered him all night.
Only the silly thing he did, cost him that night. Ali wasn't on form. Prime Ali is better.
But Ali was hitting his washed up stage. Young was making everyone look bad. In the 80s, you can see his skills are not the same. Young was once quick and elusive.
After the Norton fight...not so much
Similar in the sense they were outside fighters, went to the ropes, could block very well and knew when to clinch. Both had excellent boxing IQs. Not to mention great reflexes.
Young had better fundamentals and timing, Ali would keep his hands low. Young was probably even harder to hit in the head than 70s Ali with his great timing and skills.
There were similarities. Young being better fundamentally than Ali , more of a clever fighter In his prime...which is Incredible. Ali being quicker, with a higher KO percentage percentage.
Ali had more gifts physically, and was the better overall fighter. Young had better fundamentals and was cautious. Young also was a counter puncher/ outside fighter. Ali was a pure outside fighter, who fought more aggressive than Young with much more footmovement. Either though he wasn't known as an aggressive fighter. He wouldnt play the fight Young does..
Young was chess, Ali was a bit less chess, more finesse. At dancing he was the best. Fundamentally Young, could counter correct. Alis punches had more effect. But when jimmy planted his feet, he had a decent punch when it did connect..
Not like the other contenders though
He wasn't a T Rek
They looked a little bit a like too. (Much less so close up) Young learned a lot off Ali. And added his own thing to the game. Much like Holmes
I remember Larry Holmes never fought Greg Page
I read about that situation, but I am sure that it would have been one of the biggest fights of the day.
would have been great if Greg was in top condition.
Wasn’t needed first Berbick beats him later Bey !!!
He didn't want none of GP
@@supra1722 when GP was in shape and mentally on point he was absolutely beautiful to watch
