I can't stress this enough, my father owns a Excavating company and before I even got my foot in the door with him I had prove myself as a labor for a separate demolition company. Never act like you know it all and try learning something new every day. Great video!!

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but I’m living your life. I’m 25 years old, grew with my dad being a crop duster/sugar cane farmer. I was 7 years old pulling can carts in the field, and I’m currently in year 3 of a excavation company. This is nuts

It takes a lot of work but don’t give up. I’m in my mid thirties and I started my business at your age. The whole trick is to be good to your customers. I still have the same customers from 13 years ago. Don’t be scared to work and you will succeed.

But im always open to learning new things. Btw, how do you get your word out to the masses and how to get customers when starting up such business?
Erik 2133 For me it was all word of mouth. One key for me was the salesmen at the lumber yard I deal with. I did a project for him and he was really impressed. He deals with a lot of home owners and he started handing my name out. But it goes back to being good with your customers. Sticking to your price and being honest. It only takes one unhappy customer to ruin a reputation that you have been trying to build. Also when I first started out I would take crap jobs get a client base. If you do a job that nobody wants and you do it well. You will have that customer for the rest of your life.

It amazes me hearing people so young about to finish landscaping this and that. Im 21 years old just started concrete and have no idea wtf im doing and i probably wont get it until im like 30. Wish i couldve been taught at a young age

I landed 3 gardening contracts this month in my first month of business, I feel very blessed, I just need the bravery to take on the bigger patio and hard landscaping projects, my wife says not to do what I dont know, but i will study how to lay patios and do the inclines properly because I can make 10x more than just cutting grass here in the UK, thank you for your inspiration, it means the world to me!

You always been fair and honest with people, that’s why I took some of your course and truly learned something.
A totally honest video, and I wish there was a video based university when I started my business years ago. I no longer have that business but everything you said in this video is absolutely true. The best words of advice I ever got was from another business owner on my path and that was “Never get into or open a business you know absolutely nothing about period.” He went on to say that basically you will fail every time, because learning from someone else and taking the time to educate yourself is the hardest part of the journey so to speak. You also hit a major key point, same thin he also told me, that the character and ethics of your employees will either make you or break you. I always ran my business with the mindset that nothing is a secret and knowledge is powerful in the right hands, an to always remain humble. Your absolutely 100% right about the employees portion of this video they are the most critical key to your success and should be able to work in an environment that values their input and ideas. I’m not saying every idea is gonna be great or even used, but having that “ I don’t pay you to think” mentality is only closing the door to your growth and success. Again congratulations on your success, and I believe it’s incredibly awesome that you have a large platform of experienced people to educate others in their paths to success. Thank you for making these videos an I for 1 will continue to watch them as long as they are made.

Great video and honest message. The template you describe, of having a work ethic, then applying it in baby steps, graduating from one level to the next and the next and the next works in every industry --- not just the trades. I could relate to the message in more ways than you may imagine even though we come from two very different worlds. Awesome.
Love your videos, I started my excavating business last year with nothing but a few shovels and my pick up. A year into it and i have a brand new mini excavator, a 20 ton excavator, and semi new skisteer, a dump truck and 5 employees. I had a head start since I would estimate and be a superintendent/project manager before I started the business. These videos helped me to bring my game to the next level.
I’ve watched a lot of great videos by you, this is by far the best one I’ve ever seen. This mental advice will be more valuable then any of the actual projects you’ve helped me through.
I am a 22 year old kid starting my own business with knowing nothing about construction, I got my own dump truck and two roll off trucks, and two skid steers, but I will never have been able to do this without my father who retired but came back to support my dream which I didn’t even know I wanted, he opened my eyes into a new industry and I will forever be grateful for that. I’m learning as I go but I have the drive to succeed and master skills in the trades I’m going into. Your videos inspire me to keep on going and showing me that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it.
I don't feel so bad now. I started out at 6 years old hoeing weeds out of the corn and beans. Get up at 5:30 with 2 of my brothers and work a few hours. After that we would walk across the road and go golfing. Thank you for what you do. You helped me build my back patio and 8' wall last spring. Hopefully by next summer I will have the waterfall completed.
This video took me way back to my childhood days when my father would bring my brothers and I to the shop. Back then I hated waking up in the am to go with him, specially since he was the boss and was the fist one to open and last one to close. That is so true about the " couch". When I worked with a narcotics K9 we would put stuff out on the curb for free and it would sit there for weeks. Then I day we put something out with $5 on it...gone in less than 10 min. From then on all our trash...I mean valuable items had a price tag on them. Now, we did have people buy things but most just walked off. Oh the good old days...sure do miss my little buddy Carter. Yellow lab that just loved finding dope and gunpowder! R.I.P my friend

Great video. Reminds me of how I got my business as a computer consultant started years ago. One important tip I'll give to potential business owners. When you're not sure what to bid, just throw out the biggest dollar number you can think of. If the person blinks, it is too high. If they don't blink, not high enough. Raise your rate on the next job. I went from $35 per hour in the 1990s, up to $50, $75, $125 & more. Nobody blinked! Then, I decided to bid by the job instead of by the hour. I bid $1000 on a job I knew would probably only take me about 45 minutes. Sold! My next step from there was $10,000 on a 7 hour night job. My profit was $7000. Btw, not "your snarky," you're snarky.
I like to add....... Don't listen to the people who say "your not making enough money" in the beginning. That's what business is its sacrifice that most people don't do. Most people expect that you start a business and money starts poring in. You need to create a name and might have to do it for less the others before your a trustworthy company. Don't start your business with a "employee" mindset. Its all up to you now to make it happen. Faith and prayer is when my business started picking up.

When i was younger and someone offered me some money to do some odd jobs at their house and took the offer and 4 years later i sometimes lost count of much money i have and i now work for quite a few people doing odd jobs and i am only 18 so not all young are bad. after high school i may be starting my own construction company. And i am making twice as much money now per hour then when i started.
Flouride in the water, vaccines, chemtrails, GMO glyphosate soaked foods, beta wave tv programing, social media designed to addict and depress. School systems dumbed downed for the lowest common denominator, The intensional breakdown of the family unit. Prison system bursting at the seams. But yeah it's probably the fucking millennials fault.
The generational bashing is a weak way to make yourself feel superior for doing nothing beyond being born. I started my own company after being sick of working for people much older than me who were lazy and would never even take the time to learn the basics of the industry their business is in. I've also worked with people my parents age who taught me about the importance of quality work and drive. It's not about when you were born, its about your character and usually the environment you were raised in.
Cool story. That's interesting you have a real estate business in Costa Rica. I'm a homestead farmer in Costa Rica and I make most of my money driving an old backhoe around the neighborhood. Thinking about how to expand that business is how I came across your videos. As opposed to a dirt work school like what you're running I'm trying to get a farming school off the ground like right now for this upcoming dry season. Almost there. What you were saying about key people is important, I've been stuck on that one in recent days as I try to get the farm to run itself so I can do dirt work.

I get what your saying here. I have longed to own my own business for many years now. I can say covid has been a blessing and a curse all the same. I was able to finally last year find what I truly wanted to do and this year I was able to get my tools up, get the equipment I need, get my advertisement, and I have made my up the beginners ladder. I currently have jobs coming to me that I didn't see coming this soon. It all started working for my rent, I then decided to go for it. I gave my business a name, I started doing odd jobs here where I live. One of my clients owns multiple restaurants. Through providing services to him I have been offered steady work for him maintaining his restaurants. I decided to go into soft/pressure washing, handyman, and maintenance. My main goal is to soft wash/pressure wash. But I cannot survive on washing alone especially just starting out. I have no start out money. Taxes got me a truck, my wife's has helped me build my tools up from her paychecks and school checks, and we used some of the covid money. I actually had to request a down payment for this next job because I actually dont own the tools I am going to need. It was difficult to place a bid on this job but I feel like it was the right price. I have always followed my heart in my pricing no matter what haters say. I dont under bid anyone intentionally. I know what my costs/expenses are so I know what I can charge and stay in the green. I have had 0 education in this. I have learned from past employment, from working with friends, watching how others run their business. I do honest work, I am not here to compete, don't care to. My way may not be the other guys way, I'm okay with that. But I am starting from 0 and working my way up. I have had the opportunity for the first time in my life to learn how to operate a tractor with a bucket and backhoe attachment. Just by working for my rent. My boss/landlord is an experienced heavy equipment operator. Luck I ran into, never expected. But my life experiences, I'm only 32, but I have enough experiences that I feel I can and will be successful the way I have chose to run my business. It is very small steps, frustrating at times but it is possible. Just when I was getting down and thinking it was not going to work, I got a call for this next job and a future opportunity for my business. It takes time, dedication, and patience.
I worked for a small contractor for 17yrs. Small family owned at first. Micro management, and hired people who were useless. If I spoke up about their performance I was told I needed to give them a chance, yet I was always the guy picking up the slack. It soured me so bad that I went to work in a gravel quarry. Again, the less than stellar employees who's slack I picked up caused me to bail. It is corporate run. I feel like I failed myself because at 54 I don't want to start a business. I have to say, you totally get it. I wish I could have worked for a guy like you. Diversity is key !
So true about the company given to people. Huge lessons never learned because they did not have to earn it, no hunger just entitled. One of my favorite videos that you put out was the "silver spoon" topic. I still deal with people who say you can't do it, it's not worth the risk...that's part of my silver spoon.
I have just went out on my own in business my uncle and I r getting a small construction business going and I have a horse shoeing business and he has a restaurant it is a lot of time investment and hard work to do it all and keeping things straight but everyday I get up at 4:30 to feed the cows and horses and get the day going it ain't paying back yet but I know it will as long as I stay at it . Love the video and want to start in the university but I just don't got the money to just yet but it is coming just finished a quote for a full garage build hopefully they go for it so it will go after we get a bathroom remodel done and a drive way ........thanks again your videos r more educational than you know for those that really watch the details

I like videos like this--very informative. I totally agree with you on finding those amazing people with character you can trust & teaching them everything you know, and then trusting them to run that business for you. That's what's wrong with America today. Corporations think that if you have a 2-4 plus year degree, even without experience, you are qualified to be a manager, and that's not very often true. Employees that started out at the ground level and worked their way up are usually more committed & attentive to employees' and the specific business model needs vs those who worked for another company with a college degree, but are mostly apathetic, because they are looking for the next best job on the horizon.

A totally honest video, and I wish there was a video based university when I started my business years ago. I no longer have that business but everything you said in this video is absolutely true. The best words of advice I ever got was from another business owner on my path and that was “Never get into or open a business you know absolutely nothing about period.” He went on to say that basically you will fail every time, because learning from someone else and taking the time to educate yourself is the hardest part of the journey so to speak. You also hit a major key point, same thin he also told me, that the character and ethics of your employees will either make you or break you. I always ran my business with the mindset that nothing is a secret and knowledge is powerful in the right hands, an to always remain humble. Your absolutely 100% right about the employees portion of this video they are the most critical key to your success and should be able to work in an environment that values their input and ideas. I’m not saying every idea is gonna be great or even used, but having that “ I don’t pay you to think” mentality is only closing the door to your growth and success. Again congratulations on your success, and I believe it’s incredibly awesome that you have a large platform of experienced people to educate others in their paths to success. Thank you for making these videos an I for 1 will continue to watch them as long as they are made.

Great video and honest message. The template you describe, of having a work ethic, then applying it in baby steps, graduating from one level to the next and the next and the next works in every industry --- not just the trades. I could relate to the message in more ways than you may imagine even though we come from two very different worlds. Awesome.
Love your videos, I started my excavating business last year with nothing but a few shovels and my pick up.
A year into it and i have a brand new mini excavator, a 20 ton excavator, and semi new skisteer, a dump truck and 5 employees. I had a head start since I would estimate and be a superintendent/project manager before I started the business.
These videos helped me to bring my game to the next level.

I am a 22 year old kid starting my own business with knowing nothing about construction, I got my own dump truck and two roll off trucks, and two skid steers, but I will never have been able to do this without my father who retired but came back to support my dream which I didn’t even know I wanted, he opened my eyes into a new industry and I will forever be grateful for that. I’m learning as I go but I have the drive to succeed and master skills in the trades I’m going into. Your videos inspire me to keep on going and showing me that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it.
I don't feel so bad now. I started out at 6 years old hoeing weeds out of the corn and beans. Get up at 5:30 with 2 of my brothers and work a few hours. After that we would walk across the road and go golfing.
Thank you for what you do. You helped me build my back patio and 8' wall last spring. Hopefully by next summer I will have the waterfall completed.
This video took me way back to my childhood days when my father would bring my brothers and I to the shop. Back then I hated waking up in the am to go with him, specially since he was the boss and was the fist one to open and last one to close. Thanks to those teachings it shaped me into the person I am today.

He immigrated to the u.s. with literally nothing and worked so hard climbed just to give me and my siblings the comfortable life we have. Awesome stuff. I am 40, been in landscaping pretty much all my life amongst other things. I have a small business that I am looking to take to another level. Wish I would have taken it this serious way earlier. Took landscape design at Clark State Community College in Springfield Ohio. I’m ready to learn to learn more on running my business.
That is so true about the " couch". When I worked with a narcotics K9 we would put stuff out on the curb for free and it would sit there for weeks. Then I day we put something out with $5 on it...gone in less than 10 min. From then on all our trash...I mean valuable items had a price tag on them. Now, we did have people buy things but most just walked off. Oh the good old days...sure do miss my little buddy Carter. Yellow lab that just loved finding dope and gunpowder! R.I.P my friend

Great video. Reminds me of how I got my business as a computer consultant started years ago.
One important tip I'll give to potential business owners. When you're not sure what to bid, just throw out the biggest dollar number you can think of. If the person blinks, it is too high. If they don't blink, not high enough. Raise your rate on the next job.
I went from $35 per hour in the 1990s, up to $50, $75, $125 & more. Nobody blinked!
Then, I decided to bid by the job instead of by the hour. I bid $1000 on a job I knew would probably only take me about 45 minutes. Sold!
My next step from there was $10,000 on a 7 hour night job. My profit was $7000.

I like to add....... Don't listen to the people who say "your not making enough money" in the beginning. That's what business is its sacrifice that most people don't do. Most people expect that you start a business and money starts poring in. You need to create a name and might have to do it for less the others before your a trustworthy company. Don't start your business with a "employee" mindset. Its all up to you now to make it happen. Faith and prayer is when my business started picking up.

If you believe in something keep trying , it will work out or get better , not if you keep quitting and trying something else and then quit that . There’s always been lazy people in every generation, there is kids with zero ambition, and there is kids with more ambition than you me and the guy next door combined. It’s not the generation. The ambitious ones are just too busy out getting at it to be on social media or anywhere they will be seen
When i was younger and someone offered me some money to do some odd jobs at their house and took the offer and 4 years later i sometimes lost count of much money i have and i now work for quite a few people doing odd jobs and i am only 18 so not all young are bad. after high school i may be starting my own construction company. And i am making twice as much money now per hour then when i started.
Flouride in the water, vaccines, chemtrails, GMO glyphosate soaked foods, beta wave tv programing, social media designed to addict and depress. School systems dumbed downed for the lowest common denominator, The intensional breakdown of the family unit. Prison system bursting at the seams. But yeah it's probably the fucking millennials fault.
The generational bashing is a weak way to make yourself feel superior for doing nothing beyond being born. I started my own company after being sick of working for people much older than me who were lazy and would never even take the time to learn the basics of the industry their business is in. I've also worked with people my parents age who taught me about the importance of quality work and drive. It's not about when you were born, its about your character and usually the environment you were raised in.

Cool story. That's interesting you have a real estate business in Costa Rica. I'm a homestead farmer in Costa Rica and I make most of my money driving an old backhoe around the neighborhood. Thinking about how to expand that business is how I came across your videos. As opposed to a dirt work school like what you're running I'm trying to get a farming school off the ground like right now for this upcoming dry season. Almost there.
What you were saying about key people is important, I've been stuck on that one in recent days as I try to get the farm to run itself so I can do dirt work.

I get what your saying here. I have longed to own my own business for many years now. I can say covid has been a blessing and a curse all the same. I was able to finally last year find what I truly wanted to do and this year I was able to get my tools up, get the equipment I need, get my advertisement, and I have made my up the beginners ladder. I currently have jobs coming to me that I didn't see coming this soon. It all started working for my rent, I then decided to go for it. I gave my business a name, I started doing odd jobs here where I live. One of my clients owns multiple restaurants. Through providing services to him I have been offered steady work for him maintaining his restaurants. I decided to go into soft/pressure washing, handyman, and maintenance. My main goal is to soft wash/pressure wash. But I cannot survive on washing alone especially just starting out. I have no start out money. Taxes got me a truck, my wife's has helped me build my tools up from her paychecks and school checks, and we used some of the covid money. I actually had to request a down payment for this next job because I actually dont own the tools I am going to need. It was difficult to place a bid on this job but I feel like it was the right price. I have always followed my heart in my pricing no matter what haters say. I dont under bid anyone intentionally. I know what my costs/expenses are so I know what I can charge and stay in the green. I have had 0 education in this. I have learned from past employment, from working with friends, watching how others run their business. I do honest work, I am not here to compete, don't care to. My way may not be the other guys way, I'm okay with that. But I am starting from 0 and working my way up. I have had the opportunity for the first time in my life to learn how to operate a tractor with a bucket and backhoe attachment. Just by working for my rent. My boss/landlord is an experienced heavy equipment operator. Luck I ran into, never expected. But my life experiences, I'm only 32, but I have enough experiences that I feel I can and will be successful the way I have chose to run my business. It is very small steps, frustrating at times but it is possible. Just when I was getting down and thinking it was not going to work, I got a call for this next job and a future opportunity for my business. It takes time, dedication, and patience.
I worked for a small contractor for 17yrs. Small family owned at first. Micro management, and hired people who were useless. If I spoke up about their performance I was told I needed to give them a chance, yet I was always the guy picking up the slack. It soured me so bad that I went to work in a gravel quarry. Again, the less than stellar employees who's slack I picked up caused me to bail. It is corporate run. I feel like I failed myself because at 54 I don't want to start a business. I have to say, you totally get it. I wish I could have worked for a guy like you. Diversity is key !

So true about the company given to people. Huge lessons never learned because they did not have to earn it, no hunger just entitled. One of my favorite videos that you put out was the "silver spoon" topic. I still deal with people who say you can't do it, it's not worth the risk...that's part of my silver spoon.

I have just went out on my own in business my uncle and I r getting a small construction business going and I have a horse shoeing business and he has a restaurant it is a lot of time investment and hard work to do it all and keeping things straight but everyday I get up at 4:30 to feed the cows and horses and get the day going it ain't paying back yet but I know it will as long as I stay at it . Love the video and want to start in the university but I just don't got the money to just yet but it is coming just finished a quote for a full garage build hopefully they go for it so it will go after we get a bathroom remodel done and a drive way ........thanks again your videos r more educational than you know for those that really watch the details

I like videos like this--very informative. I totally agree with you on finding those amazing people with character you can trust & teaching them everything you know, and then trusting them to run that business for you. That's what's wrong with America today. Corporations think that if you have a 2-4 plus year degree, even without experience, you are qualified to be a manager, and that's not very often true. Employees that started out at the ground level and worked their way up are usually more committed & attentive to employees' and the specific business model needs vs those who worked for another company with a college degree, but are mostly apathetic, because they are looking for the next best job on the horizon.
