    I didn't realize that it was not Algae. I'm just not one to use many fake plants.
    I have used mops in the past and do sometimes use fake floating plants in a dropping tank
    for babies to hide in. You still are doing a fantastic service to the hobby.

    If your using that much light, why not use Live Aquarium plants? The help to filter the aquarium and create harmony for the fish.
    Having live plants would cut down on the Algae.

      Thanks for the comment. I do maintain live planted tanks also (I'm in the aquarium service business). The algae on the canopy is actually slime algae which is not actually algae at all but caused by cyanobacteria. Plants wouldn't help that actually, But I do love planted tanks. And they are great.

    How often do you change the water? What did you put in the new water? Did you temper that water before adding!

    • @TroyFishBoy
      @TroyFishBoy  7 років тому +6

      I change the water every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the tank's needs. I use a product called Prime to treat the water. Works great and very concentrated. Yes, always treat the water first and check the temperature to make sure you match closely to what is in the tank. You can use a thermometer but I usually just feel it with my hand. As long as it is pretty close, you should be good. Thanks for watching!

    I'm about to purchase some skirt tetras soon after i get the fish how often do i change the water?

    • @TroyFishBoy
      @TroyFishBoy  7 років тому

      I like to wait on the first water change after adding new fish. If it's a new tank I would wait at least a few weeks...if it's an established tank I'd wait at least a week to let the new fish get acclimated before I do a water change.

    What if I have algae eaters,(otos). Do I need to wipe all the algae off? Am I taking away their food supply?

    • @TroyFishBoy
      @TroyFishBoy  7 років тому

      Yes you will probably still have to scrape some algae, but they will usually find plenty to eat. Remember is grows on all of the decorations also, so they should be fine.

    what kind of pad

    • @TroyFishBoy
      @TroyFishBoy  7 років тому

      You can get an aquarium pad for cleaning the glass at any aquarium store. They make a specific type for glass tanks and a different, softer one for acyrlic tanks. You can use the acrylic pad on glass but never use the glass pad on acrylic tanks, it will scratch it up.

    Is it normal when I do a water change the water is still dirty and poop floating around.

    • @TroyFishBoy
      @TroyFishBoy  7 років тому +3

      You may need to clean it again soon if it's that dirty. All it helps if let everything settle before you drain the water.

    You should invest in a more efficient filter, it will save you a lot of money.

      This is a really old video. I have a 50 gallon now with a wet dry. You'd like it. I need to make a video of it. I'm actually in the aquarium service business...this was a fun, simple tank I set up for the kids years ago. Thanks for the comment.
