This is one of my favorite pieces to listen to. There's something magical about the opening. I know #9 is the "popular" choice, but I've always gotten so much more out of this.
For me. Walking around in Praha is like coming home. And Dvoraks music grasps the czech soul and the atmosphere in Bohemia. And this Karajan recording is probably close to what Dvorak was dreaming of when he composed it. Even if there is close nabourship to german music, Dvorak and Smetana created a special czech sound which you can't miss. Genuin czech like Griegs "norwegian sound". The third movement alegretto gracioso is the czech soul itself. Take a trip outside Praha in the bohemian landscape and you will feel the spirit of Dvorak.
GRACIAS.
Without Dvorak and his great performers and conductors such as Karajan and his orchestra , our world would have been very lonely . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
The comments about the orchestra appearing militaristic could perhaps be justified, but do not detract from the music, the performance, being outstanding.
Karajan has proved the norm of contemporary orchestra performance through this. He achieved the most sophisticated orchestra aesthetics with VPO in the 1980s. Please compare this Dvorak symphiny no. 8 performance to that of 60s, which is a little wild but spiritual. Many thanks for uploadung this.
❤ omg! I listened to this when I was in highschool (1999). At that time, I found the cassette at 'imported section' only, in another city quite far from mine. Yes. it was difficult to find such music back then in my country. Miss it so much! Tq!
Wow, I couldn't miss any moment while watching this video. It's amazing! May I repost your channel on the platform of Ganjing World? I will keep everything as is and include your channel link as the source. Thanks, dear!
@@MrTann2010 Dear Mr. Tan: Maybe you can help me out. I heard that the first principal violinist died in a mountain climbing accident. Is this true? Thanks. Greetings from Canada.
At least up until 14:00 the orchestra is carrying Karajan. After the beautiful solo of the concertmaster at 14:00, the orchestra seems to start to lead. This is strange.
He had horrible back pain...and anything visual is playback as he would go back and make sure trumpets etc. were all in line and the cameras had the right filters etc - the video shows the orchestra largely faking it, especially when the different sections are shown...but the performance is of course the real deal.
This is from the days when the Wiener Philharmoniker wouldn’t take women on. They’ve changed that now, but it has taken them a long time and a lot of agonising.
Because they went back and reshot the much of the video with the original sound playing over loudspeakers - so they're basically faking and following Karajan's instructions just for visual effect.
For me, the happiest symphony ever.
1. Allegro con brio (00:00)
2. Adagio (09:50)
3. Scherzo. Allegretto grazioso - Molto vivace (21:28)
4. Allegro ma non troppo (27:06)

This symphony is either marciale or very lyrical. But Dvořák's 4th, 5th or 6th are very well done too!
same here
Perhaps it is because Dvorak had a special appreciation for the cello, and this symphony is very cellistic
My favorite Dvorak symphony conducted by my favorite conductor.

Debatable
Both together are Dvorak's crowning achievement. The greatest symphonies of the 19th century, and probably of all time.

lol- flute player @ 05:25 not even trying to make the fake playing look real! 😂
This has to be one of the most tepid Dvorak 8s I ever heard, and even if you prefer that the reverberant acoustics don't do it any favors.
No emotion
When you listen to its ?
none of these performers seem to be feeling any enjoyment in their playing whatsoever. Especially the first flautist.
Because they went back and reshot the much of the video with the original sound playing over loudspeakers - so they're basically faking and following Karajan's instructions just for visual effect.
And not one woman in sight. Bigots against women. The flute solo in the last movement was awful. Totally lazy rhythm.
