Thanks for an idea. I also had an idea of using my recycled bike tubing as a trx as well. But my main goal is to use outdoor spaces, so using leather and other materials available in the area are just as opportunity for me. Also I do my workouts with swimming trunks.
This is an Amazing resource and idea for beginners. I primarily do high rep bodyweight row as a beginner... Can do max 5 pull ups on my doorway pull up bar. As a Beginner my current goals are to master basics and then do exercises on gymnastic rings and advanced stuff. Reddeltaproject and Matt has always been an amazing mentor for me. I've used this exact resource to up my pull game. An issue is that the handles that align perfect. So I revisit this video a lot. Thanks for everything Matt. I used to love prussik trainer but sadly... Bowline won my heart. Appreciate it.
Let's say you aren't jumping from exercise to exercise but concentrating on one like horizontal pulls, this is feasible. An additional benefit, you will get good at tying bowlines! Bowlines are one of the most useful knots!
I once built a gym where I just set up several of these so I could go from one exericse to another too. I found that if you have one of overhead reaches, one set for hit height and one for ankle height that's good for most anything.
@@RedDeltaProject Interesting! I didn't consider that, multiple units. A person could set up different stations, perhaps even outside like a fitness trail, maybe run or do walking/travelling lunges or side straddle hops, or backwards running between them, to get to each station. Besides suspended push ups, horizontal pulls, dips, and pull ups and other suspension exercises like ab "rollouts" actually lean outs, maybe set a plank against a stump or tree ... Certainly in a yard with a swing set you could have a loop, a circuit with several ropes on a swingset, which sometimes you see for free or low cost on craigslist, or use trees if that's an option... During parts of the day playgrounds are sparse enough to try this there...multiple stations...two sets with stretching in between or circuit training? Interesting...
@@RedDeltaProject Ankle, hip and overhead reaches, how high did you set the overhead one? I saw your Prussik trainer and made one but influenced by your comment here I made two sets of handles, and one plain foot loop, even though it adjusts easily enough, so I could more easily do changes including antagonist supersets like pull ups and dips without changing the height each time. I think this is an unappreciated idea, having multiple handles or units. I have also set up my trainer on a swing set high and to work my abs or hamstrings just used the swing for my feet. Sort of like having two units. Thanks! I'm getting a lot of mileage out of your suggestion and spinning off of it! Great content by the way! I really like that exercise Library you did! Thanks!
If you put a slip in the bowline knot you would be able to undo it very quickly whenever you wanted to adjust and redo it. Just a thought. Great book on overcoming isometrics by the way great videos as well. :-)
I know this is a fairly old video but you can make this instantly adjustable by simply adding an alpine butterfly(AB) between your (top) anchor point and your handle. As the AB is designed to both remove length from the rope (via the loop that is created) AND allow the strength of the rope to continue through the knot, one can quickly adjust simply with larger or smaller loops created via the AB.
Instead of using the bowline for the handle you should try using a blake hitch. It's similar to a prussik except it bites when loaded and is quickly adjusted when the load is removed.
I use a set of what I guess are called press stands. They are little elevated platforms about 4 inches in diameter. I think they are more versatile and practical as they allow a flat palm rather than gripping onto a handle. I'll make a video on them again soon.
They are not a big staple for me. They are kind of hit and miss, some days I can do a few in a row. Other days not one. part of it is the lack of a place to do them.
Thanks! The diameter of the pipe is personal preference. Bigger hands will need a larger pipe. I like 1-1.5 inch pipe myself. Handle the pvc in the store and go with what feels best in your hands.
Please do a video on the ab roller. Do the lats work as hard during an ab rollout as the chest dose during a push up? (When the rollout is done in a push up position strictly without moving the hips aka with the gluteus squeezed: as opposed to done kneeling). If you did nothing but push ups and rollouts would you develop an imbalance between your anterior/posterior muscles? Also; I've seen you do hamstring curls with the suspension trainer: are these preferable to/a better exercise than doing them with your feet strapped into a roller?
RedDeltaProject. Though that is a good video; it doesn't answer any of the questions I asked above. Namely, how hard do the lats work during a rollout? If you don't have a pull up bar or anywhere to attach suspension handles, could you do rollouts in a way to focus on the lats/traps? Are hamstring curls better with a roller or with suspension handles?
the answer is: doing only pushups and rollouts will lead to an imbalanced physique and fuck your shoulders up. follow a balanced routine including pullups and rows if you wanna hit your back. rollouts are a core exercise that also uses the chest, arms and lats but in no way it is gonna give you a training effect.
onceuponthecross1 as someone who travels round a lot, I also struggle to train my back without a pull up bar or a suspension trainers. How do you train back without ANY equipment?
Hey Matt! I love the simplicity & light weight of your design. Very useful & inexpensive. SUGGESTION: for the handles, what if you replaced the Bowline with a Trucker's Hitch? A Trucker's Hitch is also a cinch knot (tightens under load), but it's much easier to release & adjust the length. Animatedknots.com has a version of it, but I personally prefer to replace the figure-8 knot with an Alpine Butterfly knot (faster & easier to tie, but just as strong!
Nice vid, thanks. One question...when you attach the rope to your tree limb/post whatever(threading the rope through your bowline),if its above reaching height, how do you loosen it off to remove it ?.Hope that makes sense?! Cheers
Makes a lot of sense and that's something I'm always working into my designs. This trainer allows you to throw the line over the out of reach support and then tying it with a bowline within reach by creating a big loop. Hope that made sense. I can make a video if need be. You can also just tie the two ropes together with a fisherman's knot and throw the whole thing over the support.
Ok,i get the bit about creating a bowline, then creating aloop to go around your support. Lets assume the support you have connected it to is 12ft high, and you have done your workout so the loop around the support is fairly snug....if you can't reach the support to untie/loosen it,how do you remove it without climbing up(if possible). Or are you just using supports within reach ? Thanks again.
Yup, I sometimes do that with the body bars here at the gym. It makes push-ups more challenging and really helps dial in abdominal tension in planks. Just be sure to use a bar that won't bend or break.
I used to make my trainers from webbing and nylon but I find the rope is vastly superior. it's lighter, cheaper, much more versatile and you don't need any metal hardware that adds weight, bulk and cost.
All you need is the 25mm climbing webbing. When I was climbing years ago all I did was throw a loop of webbing over a pull up bar. All I did was lengthen the webbing over time and worked up to one are pullups. You could put the webbing thru PVC handles as well. To secure my version of this trainer I tie a 2 foot peice of webbing with a water knot and put it over a door with the water knot on the back side of the door and close it. Then I use a BD wire gate carabinier on the webbing loop then tie off the trainer as described in this video. The water knot keeps the webbing from pulling thru the door.

Hi Matt, I have been using home made rope suspension trainer for quite some time. But this adjustable foot cradle is amazing.
So simple, so easy to do and so cheap!!! Thanks a lot :)
Great video. Never thought to use a prusik knot for this
Thanks Brian K!

Much thanks, I'll look into that for sure as I haven't run across that knot yet. You can also adjust the Bowline a bit too.

Good idea Josh, thanks!
Simple and efficient, good job!
Thank you.
Do you have homemade parallettes? If so, could you make a video about it? Or a video on pros and cons of parallettes would be awesome.

it`s so simple and so easy~ thanks a lot :)
That's how I roll, simple and easy is the way to go! Have fun with it and let me know if you have any further questions.
Genius Matt!!!
Huge thanks
Happy to help, and happy training!
Dude, you just need to run some sandpaper over the ends and it will make it as smooth as you want.
suspension trainer vs rings???
hey Matt, do you do muscle ups? if so, can you do a video on them? I'm struggling to get past 2 reps
They are not a big staple for me. They are kind of hit and miss, some days I can do a few in a row. Other days not one. part of it is the lack of a place to do them.
okay, thanks
Can i use nylon ropes here? I'm really amazed in your idea but i don't have that kind of rope
This should work with most any sort of rope you have on hand. Just make sure they are strong and not showing a lot of damage or wear
Thank you for your response! This video is almost 4 years but you are still replying to the comments! Your fan from Philippines! 💙
Steve Maxwell?
I'v been on holiday for 2 and 1/2 weeks any tips on how to get back into my training schedule?
Just get right back into it as when you left. Just keep the intensity and volume a little on the lower side for the first workout or two.
RedDeltaProject Ok thanks.
Appreciate this👍
Happy to help and happy training!
hi matt!i'm following your channel,it's definitely the best fitness channel on utube. can you tell me the thickness of each piece of pvc?thanks!
Thanks! The diameter of the pipe is personal preference. Bigger hands will need a larger pipe. I like 1-1.5 inch pipe myself. Handle the pvc in the store and go with what feels best in your hands.
My handles keep breaking. 😭

I think I've already covered most of this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/33YVsxZXILY/v-deo.html

Mark 157 Bro, just do them on a door. That's what I do.

what is the difference between 25 mm webbing and 5mm climbing rope sir? which one is comfortable?
20mm

Can i do dips with this suspension trainer?
For sure. The rope makes it easier to do dips compared to bulky nylon straps that get in the way of the forearms and elbows.
Thanks man!
What knot do you use to the handles? I did the bowline to the end loop but in the handles i don't know what knot should i do.
