The 5 gift rule continues to gain popularity as a way to beat consumerism, reign in spending (and actually stick to your Christmas budget), all while providing gifts that are actually meaningful and useful. The five gift rule is primarily for kids creating a “want, need, wear, read” list at Christmas, but adults can get in on it and it can be applied to other times of the year like birthdays, Easter, and more. Discover what the 5 gift rule is, variations, and ideas for gifts!

We scratched the something to wear off our 5 things - our kids only have the essentials in clothing anyway and thus they need new clothes, when they need them. So for us it doesn't make sense to wait until a certain time to gift them something to wear. I'm thinking of re-introducing it though, as something to play dress up with or our 4 year old will never get another want gift but dresses anymore because that's all she ever wants 😂
We did expand on the something to do category though - it's really two categories for us now. One is getting an experience (which usually also counts as the family present for all of us) and the other category is arts and crafts. I love the arts and crafts category and use the opportunity to stock up on anything we're running out of - paint, markers, the sparkly playdough they like so much. It's the only category I do not hold back on since it's stuff I'd get anyway. Plus it provides a great opportunity for them to unpack more. And the best thing with arts and crafts is, that they will be used up, so it's also a very space saving gift in the long run 😂
Btw, the need category, we define exactly as you do. Most of the times it ends up being active toys that they've outgrown, something that broke or something we need to expand on. And I feel you with the want category - it's how we ended up with what feels like the entire Cocomelon merchandise 😂 we use the categories also for their birthdays but have an additional category then called "sibling presents", which are a present from the sibling to the birthday kid and a small something for the non-birthday kid. For Easter and other opportunities, we only do a want, experience and arts and crafts though - we have too many books already and since the needs are usually a bit pricier, we prefer to only keep those for birthday/Christmas
The hardest part about the holidays and birthdays really are the incoming gifts from family. One of my kid's uncles is particularly good in gifting things that are maximum annoying to parents or ridiculously big and always sends at least 3 presents for each kid 😂 the kids absolutely love everything he sends and then all the well meant thoughts of what to introduce to them and how to limit our gifts gets pretty useless 🤷‍♀️

haha yeah I'm sort of crazy with the incoming gifts and upset a lot of people, but basically won't accept anything without pre-approving it first and they know it haha - the last 4 years we always had the excuse of moving or a tiny house with no storage though which they didn't love but couldn't argue with...
But honestly, they are only little once and I feel like the deeply intentional gifts ultimately make the longest impact. You'll also end up doing crafts and things with them which is truly the gift of connection, the other stuff is just fun YOLO enjoy childhood stuff I think haha so it's not useless!

I would love to see someone's review on the kiwico water and sand sensory table and also the pasta dough maker from kiwico!

Ahh great!! I have the pasta dough maker, and will take a look at the water and sand sensory table! I was actually *so close* to getting it a few weeks ago but didn't think anyone would be interested in it going into winter haha!

Having a only child with birthday on Christmas 😂 Thinking to have some restrains for family ❤ She’s turning two. 😊 Trying to list some ideas for family, me I’ve been thrifting so I have loads of things I can pull out eventually as gifts and some things I’ve been thinking on crafting.

Oh gosh haha! For family gift ideas, I'd suggest checking out this: www.theconfusedmillennial.com/montessori-gift-guide-newborn-2-year-old/ and this: www.theconfusedmillennial.com/gift-montessori-toys-2-3-year-olds/ loads of prices and interests!
For crafting at 2 though, paint sticks, markers, and just loose parts are really where it's at! I find that "housework" items are also REALLY good at 2 - the whole "teach me to do it myself" phase, and then more details crafts/art tends to pick up more at 3+

Oh my goodness - i've never heard of this concept but LOVE it! Wants / Need / Read / Wear / Do or Experience. I'm so sick of STUFF in my home that I'm totally adopting this moving forward! THANKYOU!

Haha I literally just had my daughter go through her stuffed animals and get rid of half - i will say doing this and "1 in 1 out" does make it quite easy to get her to purge her stuff this time of year haha

I love that she voluntarily went through her toys and happily purged from it. What a gift to teach your kids! LOVE@@theconfusedmom

I already started shopping and I got something to read and wear. I am torn on two toys I would like to teach my toddler music but I want to teach her French and I was thinking the love every music set or habbi habbi French books. I am curious if you have seen the habbi habbi language books and if they are any good.

I've seen them and I honestly dont have an opinion on them! I think it's cool how SO MUCH is tappable, but it doesn't feel experiential in actually helping them learn? Maybe if you're doing it with them and talking in french already, but I just don't see it beyond them pronouncing some words *maybe* (but my kids would likely only mimic if I was mimicking it). I tried searching some reviews seeing if it really helped the child learn the language at all which I couldn't find an answer on, and the most common complaint I saw was the wand is kind of wonky/hard for toddlers so if you do go that route, i'd check return policy first.

We have some habbi habbi books for some spanish - the first words and the foodies edition. We had them for nearly 2 years now. Our nearly 4 year old doesn't get a lot of benefit form it - don't get me wrong, she loves it but majorly is interested in hearing the English words and getting music to play (it usually plays some music when tapping the empty spaces). She hasn't learned a single Spanish word from it in all this time. Our two year old on the other hand really benefited from it. She knows all the Spanish and English words from the foodie book and most colors from the other book (that's just the stuff she is most interested in). She definitely learns with it (I never actively sat down with her since she was still so young when she first was interested in it and I didn't expect any progress - so she learned it all by herself, in fact I don't speak a single word Spanish so wouldn't even have known where to start).
So my conclusion would be that just like with everything, it highly depends on the kid.

Okay, so we have an about a 12 gift rule... but that is only because it is just us. No family or friends dropping off presents. I *slightly* go all out.

haha i like the add of *slightly* and from what you said, it sounds like they probably end up with just the right amount haha! Family and friends can add *a lot* to the mix!
