My daughter is a young public school elementary art teacher in Miami. She’s been home with me in Palm Beach County since March. There’s no way I want my baby (who is 24 years old) going back to teach in Miami. Her elementary school has 1000 kids. They had no soap in the bathrooms back in March. The kids were touching everything & their faces. The public schools were overwhelmed & underfunded when there was no virus. No safe plan, no back to school is what I say. Also, my daughter has been working at a day camp for the past 2 weeks. Yesterday they decided to shut down the camp because one 13 year old kid just tested positive & has corona symptoms. Thank you Chris for this beautiful parody. You are amazing! 👏❤️🙏🏻
I’m right there with ya...My music teacher daughter is 28 and I don’t want to lose her to this awful virus 😔 her school is going back delayed but normal. No masks required. Hope you and yours stay safe🙏 you are not alone

In VT, where things are actually going pretty well right now, we are going back using a “hybrid” model. 2 days in person instruction with 1/2 the class attending MT the other half THF. Online the days you are off. WEDS is for deep cleaning the schools. Pretty good plan but not sure anyone should be in person at all.

I’m in Georgia. I used the school lottery to get my kids into an online school through my state. If I didn’t have that, I would have signed up for homeschooling and did the best that I could with no real expectation of them making any advancement. You couldn’t pay me to send my kids to school.
I think it’s ridiculous when people expect the kids to actually do great learning in a school environment during a pandemic. I know of a lot of kids who are worried about getting sick and dying. And it’s not an unreasonable fear on their part.
“Distance learning is so stressful”! So is planning a funeral. So is not being able to visit your family members in the ICU.
These kids, no matter how few of them get it, it isn’t an acceptable number. And these kids don’t go to school with zero adult supervision.
The teachers and school workers have to put their life on the line over this. I understand that some people work outside the home and have no choice but to send kids to school, but I do have a choice.
I have written off the entire academic year. This isn’t a traffic jam. This is a pandemic. And people are dying.
For me, schooling this year is 85% maintaining a stable routine for my kids and 15% academics.

Let’s see how contract tracing works in a school with a thousand kids. COVID will spread through an elementary school like fire in a forest that hasn’t been raked.
And most likely slaughter a few of the kids, some of the siblings, nearly kill most of the parents and family members, but slaughter plenty of other people who just happen to come into contact with said kids and parents...
Elementary age children are not susceptible to this virus. Their ace2 receptors are so different than adults they’re not getting the virus in high numbers and even when infected they have an extremely low transmission rate. We always think of young children as little germ vectors but in this case they’re really not.
When NZ schools opened in May, we got parents to sign their full names as to who was picking up and dropping off every day on the classroom register (it had to be the same person everytime initially). Contact tracing can and should be done.
It's harder with 1000 students, but is doable. We had very particular and strict guidelines around our schools and preschools reopening, including staggering children, with essential workers children back first. However, NZ's community transmission rates were very low, which made it feasible (but I was still nervous as a teacher. We've since had no community transmission for 74 days).
The US is just a shitshow with numbers. How are the govt even considering it. Sure, children may be lower risk, but that child comes into contact with adults who go back to their offices, homes etc. Children can be carriers too.
@@raincheck01 Yes, they are. Not as susceptible as adults, but they are definitely vulnerable. They may not get full-blown Covid 19, but those who have caught it have developed other serious health problems. Sending children back to school when this mess is still spreading rapidly is a disaster waiting to happen. When the cases explode and tons of kids start getting sick and start taking it back home and re-infecting entire families, they will realize it was a mistake.

Search "youngest covid death" the youngest in Scotland was a year old and was the only one under 15.
In America michigan's youngest was a 2 month old. Illinois only reported an infant as their youngest death in March. August of last year had 8 children under 10 die in Florida. Kansas 11 days ago reported a six year old dead.
Approx 1000 youth of school age and younger have died of covid specifically. Another 800 have died when covid induced phumonia 236 also died of the flu with or without covid or pnumonia.
A little over 2036 died of covid, pnumonia or the flu.
Again 236 of those died of the flu with or without other complications.
1800 were taken out by covid specifically.
63k in that age range died in total of all causes. Because despite popular conspiracy, they are tabulated differently.
3% of all deaths of anyone under 24 was due specifically to Covid.

I feel bad for teachers. Not only will they have to teach in class lesson plans, since we all know there will be idiots that send their kids to school, but more then likely have to also teach online classes. Will they get more pay? More support? Not only that but risking their health. US teachers are already under paid and over worked. The US isn't even attempting to control the virus.
I'm Atlantic Canadian and right now the schools will reopen in the fall, but there will be restrictions and a lot of changes, also my provinces school board has said that school will only reopen if it is safe and there are very limited cases. Right now there are 3 active cases in my province and I think 15 or so in all of Atlantic Canada.
We wont open the Quebec border till they get their numbers down and there is no hope in hell that we will reopen the US border.
If schools open, they need to have a remote option for parents to select. Then for the love of Chris' stunning voice, hire additional staff & give them all a raise! Fund our schools!

I just hope with the right amount of staff, etc, they can be made safer. I also don't think it's fair to make teachers prepare both in class and online materials. I'm thinking of how to minimize danger at this point since schools _will_ be opening. Plus, teachers deserve a raise anyway.

My husband and I are quite fortunate that our son's school district is offering a remote learning option (as an alternative to the on-campus learning option) during the upcoming school year. Our son will be utilizing remote learning for at least the first 9 weeks of school and then, at the end of that 9 weeks, my husband and I will decide what to do for the rest of the school year based on the COVID-19 situation.

Look to see if your state offers an online school. My state has two online only schools and I know one of them operates in many states. I believe it’s called Connections Academy. I signed my kids up for a “Virtual Academy” through the state school lottery system. There is also a homeschool support system called www.K-12.com.
I have a teacher friend who used to teach at our online school and she says it’s good because they already understand distance-learning.
I didn’t want to sign them up for my local public school, even though my local public school is committed to online learning only currently. I didn’t want to be trapped if they suddenly decided to go back to in-person only classes. Stay safe you lovely Welsh Dragon.

As a public school teacher, thank you so much for this! Wish we could send the video to play on every device in the White House and Capital Hill for three days straight. Wouldn't bother with DeVos, she wouldn't get it anyway. And, as always, thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us.
Here in Norway we are so lucky. There are only about 9000 infected with Covid in the contry, and 6 or 7 in hospitals right now. So here public schools will open for the new school year and we are almost back to normal. But we have been told that we will close everything if we need to.

Austrian here, prepare to see some clusters in schools emerge and to have some re-shutdowns. We reopened most things because our numbers were really good but it's very difficult to keep the numbers low once stuff reopens. Even if your country had managed to beat the numbers down a lot.
I don't even want to imagine the chaos the US will get into as they are starting from bad numbers.
TBH, If I were a member of the tinfoil hat brigade, I'd assume pension funds had sent some lobbyists to the Trump admin to lobby for this too early reopening. To, you know, get rid of a lot of the old folks so the pension fund doesn't have to pay out. Kids mostly have very, very light or no symptoms, the real danger isn't so much the kids themselves getting sick but kids bringing the infection home to granny.

@@strictlyc7528 well , confinement and all ,here in Spain we have had about 28.000 death people and a big bunch of infected people. And the residences for elder people took the stupid decision to allow visits from people again and a lot of elderly people have died again. The only good thing is that we don't have any more people in the ICU or at least they are not as saturated as they were in the beginning. And people are aware of the virus and all ,wear masks ,etc but the gatherings are very frequent. Parties ,and not so much distancing.

Ironically, our school district just announced their plans for reopening, which include sending all kids K-5 to full time, 5 days a week in classroom schooling and 6-12 to a hybrid 2 in, 3 out system. It seems that BD is running the show here and not common sense. I am glad my little one is only a year old. We would definitely be homeschooling him if this was our only option. My heart goes out to other parents dealing with everything.
I’m so scared to go back to work at the school. I’m immune compromised and seven months pregnant. The school I work at is in one of the largest hot spots right now: Florida. Please keep your kids home, it’s not safe yet.

I’m in Canada and we have way less cases then USA does, and we are resisting kids going back to school. Even more alarming is the fact that kids who do get sick are getting worse conditions triggered by being sick with covid... and there seems to be a lot of data showing that covid May cause life lasting issues... some people are repeatedly getting sick and showing flare up of symptoms.

I got sick in December, just before Christmas. Lost the ability to taste and smell and felt bad, but never had a fever... although, I never checked. Cuz I figured it was just a could/flu. Was sick about 15 day's and my husband got a very mild version of what I had, lasted him 3 to 5 days. He's completely better... however, I STILL have a cough from December. I've been on 2 rounds of antibiotics and had a chest xray. I get "resick" feeling every couple weeks, my cough gets worse and I feel awful (no fever) and then it goes away for a bit, except the cough doesn't go away, just gets a little less. I BELIEVE I had covid in December, mainly because I'm STILL fighting something... my dr refuses to give me an antibody test and I'm too scared to go get a covid brain tickle.... haha. Anyway, if I had kids, NO WAY would they be going to school... craziness! 😷

Until last week, my counTY had more cases per day then your counTRY. Right now, your country is having a tiny surge, so now my state has about six times as many cases as your country and you have about twice as many cases as my county. I have friends in Montreal and Sherbrooke; they watched in horror as my state governor banned mask mandates.
I don’t leave the house unless it’s to go to the doctor. I have everything delivered and in bulk to limit contact. It’s like living in a cult slaughterhouse horror movie, but in slow motion so it’s even more terrifying.
The people that have the power to make change, they don’t want to even do something as simple as mandate masks.
The people who have no power, they have to go to work every day and risk their lives. It’s only in the last two days that several major retailers made masks mandatory inside their businesses. We’re counting on the businesses of America to protect the workers, which is the absolute worst possible situation.
The head of the education department wants the kids to physically go to school five days a week, even though our numbers are growing exponentially every day. They keep saying, “kids don’t really get sick from this”. What about the adults who have to go back to teach the kids at school? It’s not Lord of the Flies every day for these kids, although the administration probably wouldn’t care if it was.
A teacher doing summer school in Arizona died from this. And they don’t really care.
Susie, what the rest of the world may not realize is that many states in the U.S. are testing en masse (more tests=more found cases) and many states are reporting probable (as in Assumptive!) cases lumped in with positive tests. We won't even get into the many lab centers turning out impossible data. Do a Web search for Florida's questionable testing numbers.
ThxHarvey actually that is a right wing attempt to downplay the numbers that the actual rest of the world understands is how they are trying to reduce your horrible numbers and protect Trump instead of holding him responsible for the goshawful job he’s has done. Try and lie about the numbers, say it will disappear, here, inject something disinfectant, all of these things are just distractions. You have more than a quarter of the cases in the world. Your people account for more than a quarter of the deaths. You can try and say oh it is more testing. No actually burying your head in the sand like that is just making your country become this giant cesspool of virus. So face up to the giant 911 emergency you have, put on a damn mask and stop partying at the beach before you sink any further into a place you can’t come back from. None of us are glad to see what is happening to you, except Russia and China, but grow the frig up and stop listening to Trump. He is lying, lying, lying while you are are dying, dying, dying. Oh, and wear a mask.

I can't deal! The comedic commentary about the joke that is Betsy D. sung in that amazing angelic voice is fracturing my psyche.
In Late Feb we had 2 children in one family off with the Kawasaki symptoms - attributed to covid - off for weeks. We had some classes half missing with high temp and coughs ( before Christmas) in 2 of the classes. I was ill all over Christmas and into the new year. My colleague too she was eventually x- rayed and found to have a partial collapsed lung. Other staff have also been quite ill. Trust me with the US figs so high - do not send your kids to school. Instead - stay at home, stop the spread and protect your medical staff and families. Why did you re-open too soon?
I am sending this to my school teacher son. He misses his students, but he does not want to go back to school & put anyone in danger. Except for kids whose parents aren’t making do their homework (get it. homework), remote learning is actually working out better than he thought it would.
This also depends on the teacher and parents. I think a course on how to teach your kids at home is needed few parents are used to being the teacher of their kids.
I’ve written off this entire academic school year for all schooling for all kids. For me, it’s 85% about maintaining routine and 15% about academics. I hope nobody goes into the school buildings.

Being a teacher from Germany I can only say how much I agree with you, Chris. We have our very own Betsy D. here and parents, teachers and students are fed up with politicians gambling with our very lives just so the parents can go to work and won't have to stay at home. It's all about money.

I am a childless bachelor, and even I know that they shouldn't send kids back to physical school.
I have seen coworkers be sick and miserable, because their child brought something home from school (I'm talking waaay back before Covid-19 infected patient zero).
I remember how little space there was between student desks from Kindergarten up through senior year of high school.
God help you if you're taking one of the universally mandatory classes in college.
Stuff like science 101, math 1, literature 101, etc. (Political science 101 was the most densely packed class from my experience in undergrad. It was a mandatory, and there were no other variations of said class (like with the ones I listed) if you weren't majoring in political science.
Freshmen through seniors packed like sardines in large lecture halls. Who KNOWS where first semester freshmen were, before they came to college.
There's a REASON why meningitis shots are mandatory across most, if not all colleges.
Airborne diseases (like coronavirus) spread like wildfire in the middle of a drought, in a classroom setting.
