When it comes to IP, i've always thought the idea of supporting knowledge fiefdoms, especially in particular areas, stifles progress,
In a capitalist system where competition and innovation and heralded as crucial aspects of the system, it seems contradictory to have some privileged entities protected through such IP strangleholds.
In the same breath, you can flip the coin and question how else we are to reward and encourage innovation if there are no IP laws, and anyone can just snatch up a concept someone spent a lifetime and probably considerable amounts of money to research and perfect.
No one will want to sacrifice to innovate, putting much on the line if there isn't at least the prospect of a big reward, and anyone can just come out of left field (with little effort) and copy your hard work.
It seems our concepts of how to run a society, just like we humans ourselves, are fraught with contradictions xD

1:36 You are right about Xi being a dictator. If he isn't, then who says "no" to him? I see his purges - a hallmark of a dictator consolidating power. And the fact that he was allowed more presidential terms by votes about ~2400:0 is good inferential evidence that he is a dictator.
This means that everything that happens in China's economy (and China in general) is now essentially unknowable, because who really knows Xi? Businesses absolutely do not like the uncertainty that comes with this. Risk now goes through the roof. Whatever China's economic future looks like, it will be one with a lot less foreign investment and engagement.

When I lived in China I saw a lot of things that puzzled me, especially in regards to the economy - things that according to my Western mind shouldn't work but somehow did, and I accepted them on that level. I had a lot of Ah Ha!! moments reading Dr. Jin's “The New China Playbook” putting what I had seen together with her explanations. I only wish that other Westerners, and especially the Western press, could have the same experience.
It is disheartening to me that even after 40 years of the most astonishing accomplishments in world history the West cannot put aside its cultural biases long enough to try to understand that something truly different is going on in China and figure out what it is.

Bob, what made you think that the West does not understand communist China': What communist China ultimately wants, how communist China works. One only has to look at the South China Sea dispute to understand communist China.
As for the nonsense about the need for the West and China to work together to solve the world's problems, one only has to look at how communist China treats its citizens to know that if communist China does not give a damn about its own people, why in the world would they give a damn about the world's problems if those problems do not directly impact the Chinese communists?

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capital income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

"China and the West must work together to solve global challenges." -- to work with China is to sanction its behaviors at home and abroad.
The West (including Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the former Hong Kong) was fine without the Soviet Bloc and commie China during Cold War. It was the latter that were suffering back then.
The West (minus Hong Kong) will continue to be fine this 2nd time around without Commie China but with Warsaw Treaty countries (minus Russia).
China, Russia, N Korea, Iran and some military dictatorships in Africa belong to each other. They can form a bloc of misery of their own

When I was in China it was booming, I went there for a holiday with my family. There might have been many advantages to the Chinese approach at the very least it was necessary to take high-risk debt to facilitate its unprecedented and rapid growth. But I think the goals have shifted I think de-globalization is a bit much but you will see a far less globalized marketplace. In introducing exogenous and entropy to the Chinese model on top of having internal problems on top of the Chinese demography issues I think the so-called unavoidable rise of China was much like the unavoidable rise of Japan that preceded it. How they bounce their economy back to the factory of the world with increasingly fewer orders and lack of foreign investment with collapsing real estate and wealth investment sectors seems dire. It is a pity because I am from Australia and it seems my nation has identified its greatest existential threat as China whilst simultaneously being economically most dependent on China.

"it seems my nation has identified its greatest existential threat as China", I recommend you to watch a video that Prof. John Mearsheimer explains clearly why Australia "sees" China as a threat. It is the US that ordered Australia to treat China as an enemy following the US. Sad to say, Australia has no independent foreign policy.

This is so true. My friends had setup business in china second tier cities and their strategy is to bring new model to 'open up' the market, make quite buck and quicky sell to the local or exit the market. The competition is so fierce over there even in small town. Your competitors are going to quickly copy any good ideas and improve on it by leap and bounds, only the strongest can survive.

Very good video. When western countries, especially the U.S., complains about unfair business environment what they mean is that they want other countries to give their companies unfair advantage over the locals like zero taxes for 50 years, less duties etc. Western companies for decades have enjoyed preferential treatment from 3rd world countries because of their military, political and economic clout. They always try to leverage their countries status to "convince" governments of other countries to give their companies big advantages.
Over the last few decades as some countries began to steadily grow. the governments of these countries began to slowly re-negotiate these one sided agreements after it expired, not only for more income for their government, but also so that their own local companies can compete more on an even footing against these bigger and well capitalized western companies. And as more Asian companies began to grow to the point that they now even try to enter western markets, western businesses complain that since they no longer enjoy the preferential agreements that they once enjoyed that other countries are being protectionist. It is just pure hypocrisy. It is a case of a person or company getting used to having big advantages over their local competitors that it is what they considered norm and their right. And when those advantages were diluted even for a bit they cry and try to get their governments to intervene to pressure government of other countries to acquiesce to their demands.

We call it "Nei Juan" (内卷) in China, meaning "competing to the death", it's sort of a self-mocking way of describing how fierce the competitions are in pretty much all business sectors in China. The level of competition surpasses most of the capitalistic developed countries. And like it or not, it is the main reason for high speed economic growth of this country.

Meituan is a very good example, nothing to do with the govt, simply understand how the Chinese market works and they are not State Owned company. This blows away those myths people have been talking about communism was killing capitalism. China is not communism, people in the west just cannot see that and understand that at all, only judging the name on the cover of a book. China behaves like an American Corporation, no difference from Oracle, IBM and HP, just the same. It's a "corporation". The board picks the CEO & management based on merits and not popularity. @@Andy-P I don't think so. I think (and the majority of us in China too) think he is doing a good job. You are looking at a short term result when we are under fire and attack by the United States. So that's as expected. One thing I buy the most is his willingness to clean up the corruption in China. Right now, I could easily send a letter to report the corruption whether it's govt related or non-govt related, and that they will investigate and take action. This is great, it's a bit like he 1974 ICAC being setup in Hongkong, Took them a while to root out these issues. I tell you, I struggle to hire people in Shanghai, our problem is, many young people are backed with a lot of money, and we are running into a Japan situation. Of course the market wants them to push out some stimulus package out, but I am afraid this is not as simple as it is. If they do a repeat like in 2012-13 ish, then the money will just simple flow into the housing marketing and inflate the prices once again. The 3 red lines introduction was going hurt the real estate sector, it was a neccessary move becoz many Tycoons in China, just borrowed too much money and then ship the money outside of the country by "buying" stuff. So popping this pimpo was neccessary, or we will face the same issue back in 1998 of the Housing market collapse in Hongkong, capitalism left unchecked.

Good video about how China is not a top-down controlled society but also why industrial policy in the west fails but can succeed in China. Competition drives innovation. The US is dominated by a small number of very large companies in each sector of the ecnomy. These large companies have agreed not to compete on price, informally. Industrial policy is where the govt allocates investment money instead of the private sector. The reason why it consistently fails in the US is because the people doing the allocating are stupid or rather they listed to experts from large corporations who've made political donations. When the money is private, if they make bad investment decisions, they go out of business. But bad decisions by the govt keeps going till the govt collapses. There no way to weed out people in US govt who make bad investment decisions. In China there is competition between cities and provinces. Mayors or other officials who consistently make bad investment decisions are fired. But there's still corruption, everywhere, and China's local govt investments, I would think is still less efficient than the US's private investment.

Percentagewise, the West and China share similar figures of committed people to the development of thee country. Although it is a militarily organized state, they like in the west serve the freedoms and obligations of all its members. This is something our western leaders sometimes seem to forget

After reviewing the ITIF report, I was disappointed that they DID NOT include more current data than from 2018, 2019, and 2020.
In some of the areas, categories from 2018, 2019, and 2020 to 2022 for example, China had already eclipsed the U.S.
The only explanation I have is the political backlash they would have received from the U.S. Government, Congress, and business leaders.
If you read through the “About” section it’s loaded with American government, Congressional, political, and other influential organizations that would impact their funding.
Even then, this is still a bold study, report in todays climate of the “Yellow Peril”.
