2023-2024 will be my first year as a homeschool mama, and I'm in love with the idea of Sonlight. I've pretty much made up my mind that this will be the cirriculum I will choose for my children, but will make that concrete decision once I've attened a local homeschool convention where I can actually put my hands on these products. My question for you is what advice would you give for schooling a 4th grader and 6th grader? I know that Sonlight can be used to teach multiple grade levels, but I'm at a loss when it comes to language arts and such. Thank you!
Hi! Language arts can be tricky! It is so easy to combine for history, bible, lit and science ... but LA can be tougher! There is a placement test on Sonlights website for the LA, maybe that would be helpful. I would highly recommend calling the advisor line, they will help you pick the programs that will work for you! Excited for you to start Sonlight!
This has been the thing I’m waffling about most about next year; how to organize these beastly and beautiful supplies. As always, thanks for showing your system and helping to inspire.
Hi, yes I have an upcoming video on that! Basically I pull 6ish weeks out of the instructors guide into my working binder but I also pull the activity sheets for LA and science and the timeline figures for history all in one flex binder 😊. I’m also made a video last summer if you want to check out this years system!
Excited to see how your school year starts up! This will be my first year with doing two Book Shark levels. I have started loading my curriculum plans from Book Shark into Notion to create a digital planner. I got so frustrated when we would be on week 6 of one subject 10 of another, etc... because we follow a lot of rabbit trails some days. ;)
@@tigerlili1010 - I’m with you there, with pretty much any curriculum that spells it out for you each day. I had to move it digital because otherwise I always felt behind and rewriting my planner. Now I just cluster the weeks worth of “work” into a section of Notion. I check it off when I am done and keep it active if it is still in progress. Plus I can embed video links if I have digital content for some subjects.
I was so confused at first about the level K HBL that you have! I didn’t realize it switched to world cultures. I need to get one or the other for next year for my first grader.
I absolutely cannot work with the beastly blue binders. I sent them back and never ordered them again lol. I take each core and each subject to the printing store or UPS and get them spiral bound and then I have a flat manageable single sheet size book to work with. And that’s how I have to do it 😂😂😂 I even had the core F notebooking sheets bound into a book for each kid.
@@sciencemama Totally it’s all about functionality for me. If I put something in a drawer I might not get it back out. If I dread how many pieces or how it’s laid out I won’t use it. So now years later I just hack everything to wheee I know I’ll use it. Lol if I’m dreading a book it’s audio all the way or we won’t finish. But I have a friend who does Sonlight and she adores the binder system!
No, not all of Sonlight LA ... we have tried the spelling and it didn't work out for my son and we already liked our phonics program, so I've never even tried the Sonlight phonics program. The things I do like are the copywork, creative expression and readers! Which fits well with the Logic of English Essentials program ... I actually just filmed a whole video on why I choose Essentials and why it fits well for my current LA choices :)
Yes, but they compliment each other - at least in the way I am using Sonlight. Which I use Sonlight primarily for the readers and the composition ... both of which are not components in the LOE Essentials program. So the combo works really well for us but if I was trying to do all of the Sonlight LA it would be too much!
I'm still using Sonlight but I'm supplementing with Logic of Engish (are those the videos you are referring to?) for language arts. We are using Sonlight for history, bible, literature, science, and language arts (readers & composition). Haha, I really need to make a dedicated video on how I am combining SL and LOE :)
I’m gonna say those big blue binders are the most obnoxious things I’ve ever used haha they are horrible I wish they could come up with something better. I throw them away as soon as they come & use a super nice zipper soft big binder. I copy pretty much everything that my daughter does. We are doing sonlight for the 4th year.
I never understand why these homeschool curriculums and fundies are so focused on evolution and the age of the earth. You never see articles written about germs and algebra...

I’m really interested in seeing and understanding the working binders!

So glad it was helpful - my best advice is just try something and see if it fits and its ok to switch it up :)
My Sonlight order is supposed to be here today (woohoo!), so I'm extra thankful for these videos! And thanks for the referral code!
How EXCITING!!
Thank you so much for this! It's so helpful! Can you share more on your working binder?

I want to try bookshark so bad but I always wondered what to do when you are off schedules in different subjects

I love the idea of a digital planner, I will need to think about that! It’s my first year for two levels, so send me any tips you might have 😊

Yes, Sonlight switched the history resources between the K and A levels and I'm so happy they did that! Either level would be great for a 1st grader!

I love how everyone is so different, glad you found what worked 😊

Are you planning to do all LA Sonlight + LA essentials?

Thanks for this, haven’t watched this video yet, but I watched your video on LoE, are you doing sonlight and LoE?

Looking at your most recent videos…are you now not choosing to use Sonlight after all?

We are doing sonlight for the 4th year.
