I know you've since gotten the answer to your question on if the Shinobi ranking system of Genin, Chunin, and Jonin is universal or exclusive to the Leaf Village, with Zabuza being a Jonin, but I just want to point out that after the two Mist Shinobi who attacked them on the road were taken down and restrained, Kakashi said they were Chunin.
It gets better, especially when you get to the later arcs!
