Fender '65 Princeton Reverb 15 watt 1x12" Tube Combo Amp Lacquered Tweed

  • Had some down time between sessions and my Princeton was set up so decided to throw together a quick video.
    Fender has some quality control shortcomings - the first one I received back in October had some issues so Sweetwater sent out a replacement and so far so good. I've had notoriously bad luck with Fender amps over the years.
    With the 12" Cannabis Rex speaker this seems to be basically a single channel 15 watt '65 Deluxe as far as I can tell. It's plenty loud enough for most gigs I play these days and perfect for studio work.
    The Strat section only uses the volume knob to go between clean and dirty. I avoid setting the amp on 10 since it adds a harshness to my ears in the high end. 8.5 is about the max for me.
    The Les Paul section uses a clean amp and the guitar on 10. Dirt comes from an OCD pedal.

    My wife just got this amp for my BD from Sweetwater. It is an amazing amplifier. My strat, tele and my Les Pauls all sound gorgeous though it. It takes an OCD pedal really nice also. I use an Xotic EP mini boost set around 12:00. The amp is perfect right at the break up point and from there you can add whatever flavor you want. Compression and slapback for a twang, OD for classic rock and back off the volume of the guitar for that signature chime and clarity. I love it.

      Congrats on a working amp!! It'll only get sweeter with time I'm sure. The Princeton re-introduced me to amp spring reverb and I've been addicted since I plugged in- no more spring reverb plug-ins during recording sessions these days...... I'm sure in an apartment you won't get much past 2, and there isn't much usable volume below two as I'm sure you've already found. Above 5 doesn't get louder, just crunchier. Nothing but tube goodness. Cheers to you also and enjoy!!

    So. I picked up a THD Hot Plate for the Princeton. For this amp (SW edition) it's got to be the purple 8ohm if you're interested. Avail used 200-250. They are a really solid little piece of kit. There is a mid and top boost built in that you'll have on all the time. The more you attenuate, the more you're away from true break up sound. That said, the Princeton on 6.5 attenuated 16db with the Hot Plates dial at 12 o'clock yields a juicy, organic, dynamic tone for bluesing down. I can rock that, guitar on 10, in my apartment daytime with no knocks on the door. I also place the amp on a Gramma V2. If you have the dosh, I recommend. If not, the Tube Screamer and tweaking the dials on guitar and amp also produce great tones at practice volume. Hope this is welcome info for you guys. Cheers.

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  5 років тому +1

      The THD is great- I've got the 16 ohm version and used it with an old Marshall. Recently picked up an OX from UA and really like it- selectable ohms so I can use it with all my amps and a great recording tool with all the cab sims. Being able to record at 2 am and not wake up anyone sleeping in the house is great for the creativity! Good to see you're enjoying that new amp. Money well spent.

      @@DDPAV that's the one! I couldn't justify the cost (yet, wink) not having experience with atenuators but my research led me to the ox fast. My THD was just over 200 used. But yes enjoying the amp. Glad I went for it. For straight up practicing and noodling, I prefer a trio of pedals. Especially when using a loop station, which is most of the time. But the Princeton at 6.5 , Strat on 10, is a sweet spot for me. Rock on!

    Thank you for a clean demo. No whammy's, no weird delay setups or pedalboards, and you SHOWED THE SETTINGS which, for me, is really useful because I haven't developed the ear to dial in things yet. I still look up 'sounds' to try to figure out how to duplicate but settings on a pedalboard multi are never the same as what's on the actual amp they are emulating. Would you say that this is basically a Deluxe reverb with 2 less inputs? I have a tone master deluxe and I'm trying to decide if this Princeton would be a duplicate, or if it brings its own sound to the table, especially with the 12" inch speaker (much better speaker) than the stock 10" 30 dollar one they use in the Silverface.

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your feedback on the video- awesome to hear it's useful for you. Developing your ear doesn't happen over night but exploring what's out there will definitely be great training.
      I have a '68 Deluxe reissue and the two are very different. Especially as you turn up the volume getting into edge of breakup and beyond. Overall I'd say the Princeton is a more "peaky midrange"- clean to cranked. The Deluxe has a much fuller bottom end and much less mid-push. I plugged the Princeton into the Deluxe speaker and still the same sonic results. I'd say the Princeton is much more tweed era and the Deluxe is more modern. One article I read attributed the difference to a smaller transformer in the Princeton but I have no idea if that's the case.
      The Princeton is a '65 circuit so there could be some other internal differences but I also had a '65 DRRI in the studio and there was still a huge sonic difference, especially as you get above 4 on the volume.
      If I only had one amp it would be the '68 DRRI. The Princeton is a great amp but Deluxe is a little more versatile and more sonically what I like about a small combo.
      I've tried the Deluxe Tonemaster and at lower settings I think it's a great amp. Where it doesn't match its tube counter part is when you push it. There's a huge different when going for the amp to breakup, to my ears they're not in the same league above 4-5. If you're a pedal guy then that's not much of an issue I would assume - I didn't get a chance to play thru any pedals.
      Apologies for the long reply:)

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  5 років тому

      @@samfosdick9874 Well last year I had a band in the studio and they brought a 65 and 68 reissue, so I got to do a detailed comparison. To me the 65 DRI and the Princeton were extremely close, if not spot on, up until about 6-7. The Deluxe just had more usable bottom end after that and didn't get muddy or choked. Some say it's because of the bigger transformer and others have said the bigger cabinet- whatever it was the 65 Deluxe did better at upper volumes unless you were going for that "tweed" style midrange crunch/blowing up speaker. The 68 Deluxe RI got dirty sooner and when it was cranked, had a lot more distortion- extremely impressive if you're into more grit. The 65 Deluxe would get the nod if you needed more clean headroom for gigging. Since the 65 DRI and Princeton sounded so much alike I ended up buying a 68 Deluxe. To my ears there was enough difference to make it worth the purchase and for cranked rock-n-roll the thing is a beast. Though I've never believed the "takes pedals well" hype, my OCD and Archer do sound better to my ears through the 68. For me I mainly use the Princeton for tighter clean and just at breakup things(more vintage Rock-n-roll) and use the 68 for anything I need that's heavier (modern rock-n-roll). Of course when I gig with an amp the Princeton wins out for sound-to-weight/convenience factor.
      Sorry for the long reply- I meant to do a video with the amps in the studio but never got around to it yet remember my tests well.....

    I'm torn between this and the regular 10 inch blackface Princeton. I've played both and love the focused sound of the 10 inch (which sounds similar to the DRRI) but like the idea of the Princeton tweed 12 inch with more headroom because of the speaker. I would use it mostly for home use but also want the ability to gig with it. I have several pedals that i would use. Any thoughts or recommendations to help me make a final decision?

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  6 років тому +6

      Well pretty sure you can't go wrong with either choice. Also pretty sure whatever you buy you'll always wonder how the other would sound- better to buy both:)...... I've done a couple of country gigs with the tweed and I've got no complaints with it keeping up, I also wind it up in the studio often and it's a great amp- though the issue with certain notes having extraneous noise is a real pain when playing clean- high F# thru G# on my amp is the issue. Sweetwater pretty much said "that's just the way it is". Honestly though if pedals are your thing you might want to look at the 68 Princeton. It distorts out earlier but there is something to the entire 68 series taking well with pedals (something I always thought was BS). I recently had a 65 and 68 Deluxe reissues in at the same time and the 68 sounded much better with my array of distortion pedals. The 65 had more headroom but the 68 would be my "if I only had one amp" amp. Thanks for watching!

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  6 років тому +1

      Well I recently had a guy in the studio with a newer Gibson Memphis 335 with I believe the 59's pups and the Princeton broke up into classic rock tones around 4. I have an epi 339 and it also breaks up early- just the standard Alnico pickups so not sure how hot they are. My vintage pup strats stay clean up to just over 6. One thing I did notice is the volume is pretty useless up to just 2, then if you're playing a hollow body sitting close to the amp you've got to get it over 3 to hear over the pick hitting the strings and the natural acoustics of the guitar(though the balance of the two can be exactly what you're looking for). Basically for me I've got clean between 3 and 4 before my 339 starts to drive the amp- for me that's a good thing, for a jazz guy maybe not so much. I do have a heavy right hand so you may have a different experience and volume needs. Once the amp hits the crunch sound it actually doesn't get much louder, just crunchier. 15 watts is amazingly loud and I know some jazz guys gig with the 10" version in small clubs, and I actually prefer 10" but the 12" offers a cleaner bottom end when I drive it hard. I've tend to favor the bluesier tones so it's perfect for my needs. Good luck with the decision- never an easy one for sure. If you look into the '68 Princeton with a 10" you'll definitely get breakup a lot sooner and won't bust your eardrums. Of course the clean volume will be a lot quieter also.

    • @DDPAV
      @DDPAV  6 років тому

      Also watch out for the F#-G# notes, especially on the high E string - 14 thru 16th frets, for the dreaded "low under tone". Mine has it bad in several places but most noticeable the higher notes. Would not be pleasing for jazz. It's like a descending 60 hertz laser beam......

I had a '72 Princeton years ago and playing with a rock drummer was definitely not going to happen. Comparing it to my 68 DRRI, at max the 68 is a lot fuller sounding with fatter low-end response and much more gain. Some have said that's partly based on the larger transformer in the 68 but that's above my knowledge level of circuits. For me, anytime I'm using a Les Paul and the volume is over 6 the bass knob is on zero and the treble on 7.
