I've got the 10" Princeton and it is FANTASTIC! I like it better than the 12" version actually. I also have a Vox ac30 handwired head with a matching mojotone 2x12, and a pro jr v1. The Princeton is my favorite. I record it with an sm57 and r121 usually.
Hi 🙂Thank you for your great videos, Andrew!!! I use a 1965 Gibson skylark GA 5. The model without the tremolo circuit . Great sounding amp. Rhett has some great videos on them. I use a ART Pro MPAII to feed it. I found some 1969 GE 12 AX 7 tubes to replace the stock ones in the ART MPAII . Made a huge difference . That gives me more control of volume and more flavors . From the ART MPAII the signal goes through a Alesis midi verb 4 , then to a JHS 3 series reverb a Ventura vibe pedal and , if I deed some more dirt , a super phat mod overdrive pedal as well. I mic the Skylark with a SM 57 . The SM 57 is ran through the second channel of the ART Pro MPAII and on to the audio interface . Thanks again for the great videos.
Love this amp and this video and all the special guests :) I especially adore that when our son sees something awesome, his reaction is "we have to show mama NOW!' lol.
I had one in the red finish from 2017 that was 15 watts 12" speaker... i changed out the jensen for a weber jbl style speaker and changed tubes.. sadly i traded the dang thing for a dsl40😅
Great amp! I got mine from Sweetwater (shoutout, Matt Kreager!) in 2017 and fell in love right away with the beautiful cleans, easy breakup, and reverb. Apart from my JP Henry custom (which is naturally on another level entirely), it's my favorite amp. Great with pedals, great with the Ox Box, great micced up.
I bought a 65 Deluxe Reverb re issue then bought this little Princeton and the DR sits mainly in my closet I love the Princeton so much. So much better for bedroom levels.
I have the "Bordeaux" version which is just blood red with a 12" Jensen Alnico (PQ12). I love it for the cleans, great pedal platform, etc. But without an Ox Box or attenuation of some sort, it gets loud in the room at 6. Mine doesn't really break up until 7 or 8. So I either use pedals for dirt, or a long cable and just crank it with the door closed in my office. Basically my point is the amp is pretty loud. I doubt it would work without being mic'd up at a small venue with a drummer, but don't expect it to be cranked to 10 and be able to sit right next to it and have a conversation, that's not happening. At least not with mine.
I've had this this amp for a couple of years now, for use at home, mostly playing jazz, and I love it 😊 It's the only amp I need or want for electric guitar Although it is a special edition, It is available in Canada also through Long & McQuade.
i am glad you mentioned this. I am thinking of purchasing one myself from L&M to play mostly jazz, maybe a bit of rockabilly. Home use as well, but I imagine it could handle a jam session?
I have the 68 custom princeton and I built a new baffle for a 12"allesandro speaker out of plywood and put genalex 6v6's and rectifier tube and all genalex and tungsol preamp tubes in it and I also did a mod to it that added a little more adjustability to the bass and treble on the amp and I love it. I use it to play gigs at small clubs and I don't have to mic it. It works fine and is plenty loud to cut through the mix with a fairly hard hitting drummer. Throw that 10"speaker in the garbage.
I love to play my '78 Champ with it's new Weber. I put a green bullet mic in the back and send it into a Dual Showman Reverb. Sounds like a 100w Champ! Also, if you replace the 12ax7 with a 12at7, you get considerably more headroom (at the expense of the built-in Champ fuzz).
P.s... all the hits that the great sessions guitarist Louie Shelton done he used a 1969 fender Princeton Reverb and still uses it. Unbelievable the music he has done you should check out his story
Holy crap. So for about 10 years now or so, or probably longer than that, whenever I got a MacBook and consumer product recording really took off, I’ve been pressing into my speaker grill to figure out where to put my mic. Never thought to shine a flashlight into the grill to find the spot.
I've had mine for about a yr. Its a keeper. I do miss my Friedman SmallBox for the Plexi style sounds and want to get another, but this amp is great and I'm always inspired by it. Get some real feels from it.
More than any other amp I’ve used, the Volume control on the PRRI is a tone control. Meaning, the sound is completely different depending on where you set it, and small changes make big differences. You don’t set the volume control on the PRRI for the volume you need-you set it for the sound you want, and if it needs to be louder, you mike it. If it needs to be quieter, get an Ox Box. At least that’s my experience.
I had hard that the Prinston Reverb was one of the greatest amps of all time but of course rather than just buy one I had to proove it to myself by buying 5 other very expensive amps first.... But now I love playing the Tweed Prinston (C.R) and the Tweed Delux (hand wired) in stereo through a Twin City ABY. Now THAT is pure heaven.
I’ve had this amp on my Sweetwater wish list for years now. I used to have a ‘66 vintage black face super reverb and I’ve always wanted a quieter version of it. This may be the exact thing I need to be in my home recording set up. Mostly edge of breakup.
I play a fat 50’s strat through a 1975 Princeton. It’s the best setup I have. I’m convinced it has to do with the aged speaker wear and the signal size of the ‘fat’ pickups. Alder maple Hendrix strings
We need a tweed and black face head with matching cabinet. They haven’t released anything full size like that for guitars in probably over a decade. They have the super sonic but that’s more of a lower end (even if the price doesn’t necessarily agree) amp. We need a fender custom shop tweed reverb style head at 100-150w with a matching 2x12, 4x12, and maybe even some weird speaker configurations like 1x15 or 4x10. It’s always been my dream to own a fender stack, but I don’t really want a bass amp and I don’t want an amp and I don’t want to deal with vintage stuff. Nor do I want a marshal clone like their old fm stacks. I want a real reverb style half stack in tweed. Hand wired. Custom shop. Plug in a 1972 thinline tele with dual humbuckers and go to town. My dream fender setup. Unless they finally released a hardtail strat with hss or hsh. Or even make a Tom delong inspired 69 hardtail with single humbucker, but more traditional rather than an invader and single volume. Dang it I started rambling again. Freaking gas.
New Magnatone Super 59 - M80 2x12 combo amp and a '90 Fender Dual Showman head with a Mesa 2x12 closed back cab. I play with higher volumes through a Weber Mass 200 attenuator on either amp. I can mic or take a line out of either amp (and/or the Mass 200). Also experimenting with the UAFX Dream pedal and JHS Colorbox for an ampless rig.
I bought this amp from Long & McQuade in Toronto, who said it was exclusive to them. 🙂 I love it. It's my main rehearsal amp, although I haven't gigged it yet. For recording and home practice, I use a Peavey Classic 20 mini head and matching 12" cab. I run it in 1 watt mode and can get it to the edge of breakup without pissing everyone off. I record it using an e906 hanging in front of the grill cloth.
I have the bordeux reserve...wine red tolex/ wheat grill cloth/ 12" speaker. Just a great classic sounding amp...blues tones are phenomenal on it with a little screamer in front or the tumnus just to give it anlittle extry...it sings

I bought this one from Sweetwater way back when they were sub 1000 dollars. It's a fantastic amp, but I do have my reservations about the C Rex speaker. Some times it can feel a little muffled, or maybe it's just where the mid range sits. I still have this Princeton, but I got my hands on Mesa Cali Tweed 4x40 for a ridiculously good price, and it puts the Princeton to shame. I got the Cali Tweed 40 before the 20 watt was released, but I bet in a showdown of the 20 watt Cali Tweed and this Princeton the Cali Tweed would come out on top. I know with current pricing they aren't on the same spectrum, but at one time they were close. I only paid about 1500 shipped for my Cali Tweed, but those days are long gone.
I just got the one with the Celestion speaker. It’s one of the best sounding amps I’ve had. The reverb and Tremelo is very similar to the older silver face fenders. The first good amp I got was a 68 Princeton when I was 12, my dad got it at Sam Ash on kings Highway in Brooklyn, so I’ve always had a thing for this amp. I never liked the 10 inch speaker though. I’ve had four Deluxe Reverb Reissues over the past 15 years but wound up getting rid of them cause I just didn’t like how they sounded, but this Princeton is just right. I don’t think you can go wrong with it.
Yes sir , I did have to get re-educated from some of the top Studio guitarist in the world. The days of the 100 + w Marshalls are good for certain events , but for real guitarist these small Amps turned on volume 3 or 4 to achieve awesome tone is what we need to be about.... I'm going next week to look for one of these amps
I am so glad I took a chance on this amp three years ago because of the user reviews on Sweetwater -- 5 stars and about 140 reviews at the time, now up over 250 and still at 5 stars. It runs so quiet that I legitimately thought mine was dead on arrival when I first turned it on. Takes pedals like a dream, especially low-to-mid gain transparent overdrives like the Timmy and the Lightspeed. I will always cherish my 1968 Super Reverb, but how often do any of us get an opportunity to play at that kind of volume these days?
I play my vibrolux(35 watts) at volume every day. I live in a row home in Philadelphia. I hate my neighbors so pissing them off is just an added plus. My favorite time to rock is 7 AM Saturday morning after my dipshit neighbors are coming down from their cocaine, meth and vodka fueled revelry every Friday night.
Use mine live, put an old Celestion alnico in it and that adds a roundness and a bit more headroom overall. It's a killer amp and one of the best I've owned over the decades.
@@jfar3340 A line from Hey Nineteen the Steely Dan song 'cuervo gold, and fine columbian, makes tonight a wonderful thing' refers to Jose Cuervo tequila etc. Mine's an old 74 1772 celestion, an infinitely better sound than with the cannabis rex, found that speaker to be too brittle and ice picky. All the best.
I have one of these, but with the 12” Celestion from GC. Amp is so great, but I do have some issues with noise when the Trem and Reverb are used together. It’s still my favorite sounding amp though.
I’m surprised you all are just discovering this specific Princeton from SweetWater. Ive had this amp for at 2-3 years now. It’s the best project studio amp and perfect for gigging too! Anything larger I use my Fender SS22. Great video by the way!
Indeed fantastic amp however I’ve swapped speaker as I wasn’t totally sold on cannabis and I’ve put Celestion Blue 8 ohm 12" . I can’t even tell what a difference in tone and headroom . Love my Princeton.(purchased from LongandMcQuade in Canada).
I have one of those. It's great, at least until you crank it up and use strong pickups. It can get quite flubby at high volumes. I suspect it's the speaker, so I just ordered a couple to try: a Weber Chicago and a WGS G12C/S. Will report back...maybe.😁 I'm also upgrading the output transformer to a Mercury Magnetics that has both 8 and 16-ohm taps, for more speaker options. AND, installing a mod package from Fromel Electronics. I'll also be running all of my amps through a Fryette PS-2A, so I'll have good tone at virtually any volume...if the PS ever gets here (they build them to order). Mine takes dirt pedals very well too. Mostly, I use a Wampler Euphoria.
Dude! awesome! Ive been really wanting this amp since I spotted it a while back. Thanks for showing it off. I really want it now! And that Surf green semi hollow was incredible. ugh I want that haha. Hey can you show us how to recorded and mixed the drums to that bluesy tune. That was rad
I’ve got 3 Princetons I think? ( no fancy vintage stuff) but I have this one also and it’s my favourite. And it looks great too!! Edit I only have 2. The 3rd one is a Tonemaster. But yeah this tweed thing with a 12 … well I love it. (Today anyway) lol
maybe I missed it, but is that a 12" celestian speaker? I just gone one of these (65' limited edition) and white it had a tag on it saying the speaker was a Jensen, it turned to be a Celestian 12"
How are you eliminating the hum on the recording? During talking it’s so prevalent but on the edited version you’ve done a great job of getting rid of it. Izotope or something similar in the daw? Thank you,
Andrew, how do you deal with the drums just being there in your studio? I have my drums in my recording / mixing space and even though I have some ample sound treatment, this is something I think I am having the most trouble wrapping my head around. What solution are you using to do serious mixing / mastering to make sure those drums are not creating weird resonance in the room that is interfering with your room /reverb sound that you thought you were hearing because I am definitely hearing a difference with just entry level "pro" monitors. I can take down the cymbals and shove them in the bag for an intensive mix session and that really makes a world of clarity....Do you throw a big quick blanket on top of the drum kit or what? Mix with it wide open?
I love how thus amp looks, so clean, simple classic. BUT I dont want to fall in love with a pretty face. How are those of you using it like it? I love the ton of regular princeton but i think it needs more and Deluxe Reverb is NOT a Princeton but bigger, in my opinion. Thank you
I really love it. It’s a very cool and great sounding amp. Its really fun to use with and amp load box. As a producer and engineer - it’s important to have options so from that perspective have 2-3 amps and cabs to choose from really makes the difference on the recording/mix to mix and match amps.
My dad has a 68 princetin reverb if you plug a gubson into it and dont get too crazy with your pedals just a fuzz or wah pedal its beyond perfect and it also has pretty much one of the first built in distortion knobs which is a push pull scared the dhit oit of me cause i thought i broke his amp he started messing with me telling me it was broke lol numbef one amp you csn but its perfect
Great amp.....when it's working. Also check for the laser added tone between the F# and G# on the high E above the 12th. Fender said it was "within spec" but if you're doing clean jazz or country it absolutely won't work. Had the amp in for repair half a dozen times in the first two years. Finally had my tech basically rebuild the insides and it's been holding up for over a year(and the "within spec" laser went away). Amp never leaves the studio so it's not like it's abused.
That’s a great amp! I have a similar amp from vintage sound amps: it’s a Deluxe Reverb in a Princeton enclosure, but with a 12“ speaker too. And it has some things fixed that the original fenders had problems…
The problem with modern Fender amps is they sound nothing like the original amps they’re based on, and they use the cheapest components Fender can get their hands on. You’re better off finding a boutique builder who can build clones that are much closer to the originals we all know and love.
I have a late 70s Vibrolux Reverb. Thinking about trading or selling for a 65 Princeton reissue or similar to have a more reliable amp. The amp needs some work. Does this seem foolish? I'm new to electric guitars and got the amp for free.
Honestly, yes it does seem a little foolish. The Vibrolux Reverb is (in my opinion) one of the best amps Fender has ever made. Any Fender tube amp from the early 80s back is going to hand wired the old fashioned way, which means they will always be repairable. That being said, I do understand the need for a reliable amp if for no other reason than peace of mind, and the modern Fender Reissues (especially the American made ones) have proven themselves to pretty reliable. I would still keep the Vibrolux Reverb even if you decide to get a newer amp.
@@charlesbolton8471 I appreciate the reply. I had it repaired, but it wasn't easy finding a place to do it. Had to drive a few hours. I'll be keeping it!
I had this amp. Was a good amp. However I didn't like the sound. I had to change the speaker. A Jensen speaker is simply the only right way to get that Princeton tone.
Great amp. I have an original 67/68 Silverface Twin Reverb drip edge, black lines etc It's the Beatles "Get Back" amp. My 2nd UA-cam video ever was on it. Fenders are just great classic amps

I have one of these, but with the 12” Celestion from GC. Amp is so great, but I do have some issues with noise when the Trem and Reverb are used together. It’s still my favorite sounding amp though.
Ah, I love my Princeton 65 reissue with the 1x12..... :) Hey Mike ;)
I bought one of the first ones and I have to say it is amazing .
dope video dude
Thanks!
Frank is from Cleveland, Ohio and played in a classic rock cover group called Captured.
💙🤘
Love that drum kit…
I’m surprised you all are just discovering this specific Princeton from SweetWater. Ive had this amp for at 2-3 years now. It’s the best project studio amp and perfect for gigging too! Anything larger I use my Fender SS22. Great video by the way!
I use my Princeton Reverb 68 for rehearsals and Deluxe Reverb 68 for Gigs.
I have one and really dig it
Indeed fantastic amp however I’ve swapped speaker as I wasn’t totally sold on cannabis and I’ve put Celestion Blue 8 ohm 12" . I can’t even tell what a difference in tone and headroom . Love my Princeton.(purchased from LongandMcQuade in Canada).
I’m rocking a Trinity 18tmb. This speaker is a little to dark for my liking but pretty cool.
You dial the low knob on the amp way back already? That makes a big difference.
I have the dawn version and I believe it to be the most visually appealing. Also nice with the greenback.
Fawn
After watching the video, I wanted that amp too. My guitar is a Fender Japan Telecaster (Dr.K signature model).
Did you allowed some break up time for this new speaker? :)
Hey thanks for the video! Im looking to get a small little studio amp, how does this compare to something like a Morgan MVP23
Never used or heard of that amp, I’ll have to check it out.
Do you think we can we get the full first jam with Frank somewhere? It was really pretty and I want to hear the rest.
haha thanks, that’s the whole thing. It was just a two part thing I made for fun. Maybe I’ll start putting stuff up if people want to check it out.
Dude! awesome! Ive been really wanting this amp since I spotted it a while back. Thanks for showing it off. I really want it now! And that Surf green semi hollow was incredible. ugh I want that haha. Hey can you show us how to recorded and mixed the drums to that bluesy tune. That was rad
Love the guitar content!
Love this Video, but what is the song you play?? I can't think what it is. 😢😢😢
Nice 😊😊😊
Handwired Princeton with Webber 12 inch with Sm7b into warm wa273
Great amp ! You can call it Gentle Giant !
Which plugin did u use for the piano sound?
maybe I missed it, but is that a 12" celestian speaker? I just gone one of these (65' limited edition) and white it had a tag on it saying the speaker was a Jensen, it turned to be a Celestian 12"
Cannabis Rex 12”
A Sweetwater Fender special
At 4:21 you wrote "vibrato", but according to the Sweetwater page you where correct by saying tremolo.
What are the three similar looking pedals on the first row?
How are you eliminating the hum on the recording? During talking it’s so prevalent but on the edited version you’ve done a great job of getting rid of it. Izotope or something similar in the daw? Thank you,
Was Rhett running it through the oxbox?
Looking really hard at one of these. But the GC version.
You should make an album called the Cliches and market it to insomniacs
Signal chain on your pedalboard? I’m curious about the carbon into the t4 and after the T is the Centavo?
Sure is! I don’t use them in series like that but those are correct!
@@AndrewMasters Thank you! Great content and tone, beautiful pedalboard
Now you know why every studio player since they started using amps in studios has a Princeton of some kind.
No need to correct yourself at 4:21. It is a tremolo.
I have GOT to ask Rhett, Where does he get those socks?!
That’s a great amp! I have a similar amp from vintage sound amps: it’s a Deluxe Reverb in a Princeton enclosure, but with a 12“ speaker too. And it has some things fixed that the original fenders had problems…
Had it two years. I will buy more amps cuz why not but this is THE amp. 10' cord and a guitar amp vol on 5 and just enjoy yourself
The problem with modern Fender amps is they sound nothing like the original amps they’re based on, and they use the cheapest components Fender can get their hands on.
You’re better off finding a boutique builder who can build clones that are much closer to the originals we all know and love.
Reverb has a really LONG tail ??
I have 2. Amazing amps.
Fender needs to rename this amp " the lego"
What is the white keyboard you have?
arturia keylab 88
Close! it’s the 61 but same deal.
I used the teletone audio grand piano sound
@@AndrewMasters ohhhh got it
dude try the hemp speaker for more mids
That’s the speaker in this amp
Wow your little boy is so big now. But the box is still big compared to him haha
cheers
Show mama!? Erk… um, listen here, kid. What mum doesn’t know won’t hurt her, got it?!
Got to keep buying standard black so they blend in,
I had this amp.
