    I’ve watched this video twice and learned something both times.
    I got a second hand Bird-Jones type 5” for $40. I’ve carefully collimated it and I can see Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s Galilean moons but I can’t make out any detail on mars and I’m unsure if it’s a problem or limitation with this telescope or if I need to wait for mars to be in a different phase to reflect more light. The last night I looked I think it was just under 1/2.

    i have a question. To see the planets what is best: a telescope with a larger aperture and a shorter focal length or a smaller aperture and a longer focal length? (150/650 vs 130/900)

    Hi Jason, I'm loving your videos. I've been into Astronomy now for three years, first with 20x80 binoculars and now with a 10 inch dobsonian. It's the best hobby/passion ever! Keep up the great work!

    I can attest to the diagonal upgrade. I had a decent enough one on my refractor (the one that came stock with the scope,) but I got a nice 2 inch dielectric diagonal and it greatly improved focus, brightness and contrast.

    I have a 135mm reflector. For planetary viewing, Shall I go for 4mm eyepiece with 16mm eye relief or 15mm eyepiece with 3x Barlow? Thank you for your informative content 🙂

    • @smalloptics753
      @smalloptics753  3 роки тому +14

      Hello Bharat. Your more than welcome friend... As long as your 4mm is of good quality I would always recommend the eyepiece on it's own over using a barlow.. The benefits of using a barlow are when you don't have a high powered/mag eyepiece, remember, whenever you use a barlow you are introducing more glass that light has to pass through and some of the light is lost leading to a dimmer image, so a good quality eyepiece on its own is always best... Hope this helps.. Clear skies :)

    Thanks for the tips! Just getting into astronomy. I bought a cheap 90mm telescope, pointed at the moon and couldn’t be more excited. Next day I bought a Celestron Omni XLT 150. Loving the views so far. Thanks again Jason

    I used a 2x celestron from ebay 30ish form China very good i also have a svbony one 3x for around £15 and that is very good but its long and I couldn't get one of my telescopes to focus so I got a cheap x3 short form ebay for £12 and its not good a total waste of money 😒 but u live and learn 😉

      Hello Andrew. There is some good budget barlows and eyepieces out there, but, as you have found out the more you go below £20 the more noticeable the quality drops. In my experience for decent quality "budget" barlows and eyepieces a good starting point is the £25/30 mark...Clear skies buddy :)

      @@smalloptics753 hello Jason yes especially the un branded stuff on ebay I do have 2 svbony Barlow lenses one that screws on to an eyepiece and a normal one and there both good under and £15 👍 I also have the 68° svbony 15mm eyepiece and that is decent too but I don't really have much to compare it to 🤣 just the 8/24mm celestron and its a better image than I get with that , i can't find any reviews of the svbony 68° eyepiece compared to other one's but most of the svbony stuff gets good reviews so I thought u not il give I go 🤷‍♂️

    If you take the eyepiece out of the refractor, I guess it would be best to point the focuser upwards pinting the telescope to the ground, if that is even possible. Since warm air will rise it can escape through the eyepiece hole. Saying this as a inexperienced person who still wants to buy his first decent scope. So I might be wrong, but it seems obvious.

    What about blowing the cool air through the telescope with a fan?
    Although, tbh, the thing I need to get the hang of at the moment is positioning the eyepiece on my equatorial mounted telescope. It's too easy to get it in a bad spot

    • @smalloptics753
      @smalloptics753  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Thomas. Yes fans are great for cooling the tube down but are only really necessary for telescopes 10" of aperture and above but that doesn't mean you can't use them on smaller telescopes. :)

    So I recently picked up a Tasso 11TR telescope, 114x900 reflector ? I think. I purchased new mirrors and all new eye pieces, I also have a laser collimating thing. When I look at the moon, easy target I get a great image but I also see a secondary shadow in my image, when trying to view Jupiter or Saturn I see a fuzzy dot. It’s on a rather shaker equatorial mount that when all tight holds pretty good, (I like the idea of hanging a weight). So my question is what am I missing here? I’m thinking of buying a new focal tube but not sure? I think all your videos are excellent any goal is some great views of the planets and well as seeing some Messier objects as well. Do I scrap this unit and just buy an expensive one? Am I even on the right track. I have some pics of my recent moon views taken with my I phone just held over the lens but it should give an idea of what I see? Is there an email I can reach you at? Happy to pay for some quality advice… lol. Thanks I’m advance! Jim
