Mark, its sad you cant read this comment anymore, but I hope you can from the good place you are right now! You have inspired me to create Koi content in the best way, you passed away too soon. I hope your knowledge, pictures and movies stay around for a very, very long time. You will be missed, you will be remembered! Arigato Mark San, arigato! 😢

Love watching your koi breeding projects you certainly know what you are doing fantastic to watch this thanks mark for this so cannot wait for the next one.
Wow....so much effort, planning and prepping! Thanks Mark for doing this video. Would gladly have watched a 3 hour coverage of this. So interesting content as a contrast versus how you've done the spawnings over the last couple of seasons, and all from a back garden too.....inspiring!
WOW Mark ! Fascinating video, really enjoyed watching. Been a long time since your last upload. Really good to see Samuel (a youngster), taking a keen interest in the hobby. Shared to our club page. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for the thorough treatment of this subject. I hope to give this a try myself in the future. Can't wait for the next update. Hope things are going well!!
Mark. the video & depth of information you put in are great. I sincerely apologise for my previous outburst & insults to you personally. Please keep up the fantastic work you do.
Really enjoyed that, very interesting. I've seen videos of Shintaro doing artificial spawning which was great, but really great to get the commentary with this 👍 Good on you Mark. Really looking forward to see how your spawning progress this year.....I have a close eye on your goshiki spawning progress! 👍👍👍
It feels like ages since we’ve had a video upload but we’ll worth the wait. Great video, have to say the first pairing are stunning, cannot wait to see what the fry look like! As ever, your attention to detail is impeccable, run like an operating theatre 👌
Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts. Your knowledge and dedication to our hobby about Koi will always be remembered. Rest in peace Mark Gardner, Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu. 🙇
So so sad that we are no longer going to be able to see the finish of you brilliant work🥲 I’ve literally watched every single video you have made,Thankyou for all the info all the advice and ideas Mark, RIP mate the whole koi world is truly saddened 🥲
I really enjoyed watching this, I've seen videos like this before but never any explanation to go with it like the reason why the fish are dried, I didn't realise they wouldn't be fertilized until the water was added, I hope you have great results and look forward to future videos. Rob.
Thanks Mark, I've been waiting patiently for another video from you and i wasn't disappointed Looks like you've done an excellent job, not seen it done this way before found it very interesting. How are the others coming along from the natural spawning can you let us know how they are progressing please? I must say Mark that i thoroughly enjoy your videos to the point i wish you would upload more as i will be certainly looking forward to them, well done mate.
Hello Mark this is the best artificial spawning video I have ever seen I have tried my hand at it before with 0 success but after watching this video I see where I went wrong did not realise that keeping everything dry was that important thank you for all the info it makes hobbyists like myself very exited to see how its done would a normal fish tank work for hatching the fry
Omg what devastating news and I just started following this nice guy! My deepest sincere condolences to you Linda, and the whole family and friends. God bless you guys.
Excellent 👍 very informative with clear explanation of each process good luck with the fry and how are the fry from your earlier spawning kajaku I think 🤔👍👍👍
Wow.... A very interesting insight into artificial spawning. Fingers crossed for a good fertility rate. Any update on the other natural spawning from earlier this year ? 👍
This has got to be one if the most informative videos I’ve seen I always thought there was a lot more involved in breeding and this just shows it well done looking forward to the outcome. Forget to ask how the goshiki fry are getting on
Mark Gardner looking forward for that they must have come on a bit by now. I know this may seem a daft question but here goes I have 2 small koi 1 about 3” and the other about 4” both with similar colours and patterns so I’m presuming from same parent stock I bought them with a bunch of fry of eBay just to get my new pond up and running the thing is I’m a bit lost at what they are is there any way you can help me
Hey I have a question for you on selecting hi utsuri fry. I have a 100,000 fry spawn of three week old fry that are doing amazing. They are the true Hi Utsuri brood stock. The spawn produce 25 percent brown/ black fry. The rest are more yellowish due to the baby brine. At what size do you do first culling and what to look for
Mark Gardner yeah that’s what I figured. What will the yellow ones end up being, bad quality HI Utsuri or not Utsuri at all? Either way, it looks like these are gonna take a long while to sort lol. Luckily the original Kuroko are still black and the others haven’t turned yet so I can still cull them soon
wow. ive anly just started to get into koi dont even have a pond yet ive been watching so many videos on how to build a pond hiw to care etc etc. just came across this channel and 1st vid i watched was this 1.. i was just about to coment and try and find out why this was the last vid then i read some comments..... realy wasnt expecting what i read. 😢
Hi fantastic video but can i ask you a question why did you add milk, as this is really bad, Milk is dangerous to fish because it ends up depleting the oxygen in the river or ponds , causing fish to die. ... “While milk may not seem as harmful to us as sewage or other pollutants its effect on fish populations can be devastating, so how does it not cause any problems to the egg's in fertalization
Gaz, I’m unsure how much is your question, and how much is a copy and paste. I used about 1/2 pint maximum, so itself hardly an impact on the environment. If you’re asking why it doesn’t affect the eggs in this situation, I can’t answer, really don’t know
Mark Gardner Half was my ? And half was a copy and paste saved me typing, the reason I ask was While I was in the fire service for 15 years we were always warned about the possibility of milk lorry / tanker been involved in a road traffic accident & to make sure none of its cargo entered the water ways, hence why I wonder how and why it didn’t effect the development of the fertile eggs as they absorb oxygen through the egg case from the water, it was not an environment worry or anything like that, I was just wondering how it didn’t harm the eggs. Sorry I feel as if I should not of asked 😕
I suspect it’s due to volumes and timescales involved. The milk was diluted 1 part milk, 8 parts water and then only used for 1 hour, and all the time air was being pumped into the water. If milk went into a waterway after an incident like you describe then of course there’s potential for that milk to stay in the water much longer term and ‘go bad’ and strip oxygen. In most waterway pollution incidents I understand the first course of action is to aerate the water. No problem with asking!!
All doing great, I have a full series of videos of them growing in hatching jars before swimming free, no time to put the video together yet, hopefully Sunday You can see many short clips on my Facebook facebook.com/niigatanishikigoi

The spawn produce 25 percent brown/ black fry. The rest are more yellowish due to the baby brine. At what size do you do first culling and what to look for
Normally Kuroko selection would be done a couple of days after hatching and only black fry selected

Higoi, aka muji, some may get black, indeed I’m sure they’ll throw plenty of shimmies, however not decent quality black nor well patterned.
Mark Gardner yeah at least 25 percent are black so hopefully I’ll still have at least 25,000 fry left after Kuroko Culling
Mark Gardner thanks so much for your time and knowledge. I raise tropical fish for a living but only raise koi for hobby.
