  • This video demonstrates the process of koi artificial breeding and includes stripping of eggs and sperm from koi breeders, and artificial fertilization of eggs. In order to remove adhesiveness, after fertilization eggs are placed in McDonald incubation jars where they are vigorously moved in water/milk suspension by air bubbles for 50-60 minutes. Then air flow is substituted with water flow for further incubation of eggs. Additional information on Koi Artificial Spawning can be found at:

    I used to use this method to spawn my Goldfish back in the 80s when I was 12, I learnt a lot from this, haven't seen this method in over 30 years, im surprised the eggs can be treated that harshly tho in the tubes and remain fertile, whats the process after this, like to see the end result or where you leave eggs to incuabte and after where do you transfer the fry.....thanks

    What's the ideal water temperature for incubation?

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  7 років тому +7

      The water temperature can vary in wide range: from 18 to 28 degree C. The optimal temperature for incubation is 21-24 degree.

    Dude what happened with the female/male koi fish after egg stripping it? I heard about because of the handling stress the fish die, it is true?

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  8 років тому +31

      No, it is not true. If fish are treated properly they are completely OK after spawning. Stress to fish should be diminish as much as possible. Therefore, it is very important to use anesthetic during stripping eggs or sperm.

    will milk powder diluted in water work?
    or only liquid unprocessed milk ???
    also , is there any other way to remove the stickness apart from milk ?

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  8 років тому +9

      - Suspended milk powder should work. It is possible to try talc powder or silt (mud from pond’s bottom). There are some other methods but they are more complex.

    What did you do to make the fish not move? I've netted out some kois that size and they'd be flopping everywhere let alone let you squeeze 'em like that.

    How did the McDonald’s jars go clear? What happened to the milk component in the water? Did it get cycled out?

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  5 років тому

      During about one hour eggs are moved in milk suspension by air bubbles. Then air supply stopped but water flow is turned on. So, milk suspension is washed out from jars by coming water.

    and what is the role of milk ..... did not understand the role of milk

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  8 років тому +25

      Koi eggs are very adhesive (sticky). Because during natural spawning scattered eggs are stuck to plants, rocks and other substrate. Milk suspension is added in order to remove eggs’ adhesiveness. Drops of oil, other particles from milk surround eggs and prevent them from sticking to each other. After moving by air supply for about one hour, eggs lose their adhesiveness. Without adding milk, clumps of eggs would be formed and it would impact severely the process of eggs’ incubation.

    Don't you rinse the fertilized eggs to prevent the polyspermy before pouring them into the jar?

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  5 років тому +2

      Eggs of all teleost fish (including koi) have only one micropyle (opening in egg's membrane through which spermatozoon enters the egg). (In contrast to sturgeons and paddlefish whose eggs have multiple micropyles.) Therefore, for teleost fish polyspermy is not a problem; you can use any amount of sperm for fertilization and no rinsing is needed.

      Yes, it does. Koi is an ornamental (colored) form of common carp. Techniques of their breeding are exactly the same.

      Usually if eggs become white quickly this indicates that they are not fertilized.

    I'm sorry can u explain to my the water flow step ? It comes after the air flow step . I understand how to do that step just need bubbles but the water one has me confused ? I just pump water in there ? I feel awkward asking this question as nobody else has had my issue

    • @KSUAquaculture
      @KSUAquaculture  7 років тому +3

      Moving of eggs in jars by water flow is typical mode of incubation. Vigourous moving of eggs by air flow from the begining is needed only for removing of egg adhesiveness. Supply with water at this stage is not sufficient for this purpose.
