  • IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! Here's the story about an animation company that was a big risk-taker during the 80s and 90s, churning out licensed programming like hot cakes at IHOP. Produced some of your favorite programming such as Inspector Gadget, The Real Ghostbusters, Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Sonic the Hedgehog, among others. This is my most ambitious project to date since I practically did this one solo. So without further adieu, ENJOY!!!

    The Koopalings didn't have names yet, so DiC gave them names, before the localization team in Nintendo did so. Also, King Koopa is Bowser's Japanese name.

      Technically his name translates into demon or devil king koopa and princess toadstools name in Japan is peach I would be used in English until super Mario 64. Also when it comes to sonic satam sally wasn’t voiced by Christine she voiced bunny rabbit. Side note isn’t it bizarre that in captain n they show Metroid land in the very start of the intro but we never see the Metroids or samus and the butchering of characters did stop with the main cast alucard and Dracula were completely different from the games alucard not only hated his father Dracula but wanted to kill him so yeah that show was a great idea done extremely poorly they didn’t even attempt to get the game characters right. Fun fact Metroid was at one point going to get a animated series cels for this canceled series is online.

      Oh by the way Madeline isn’t an orphan for some strange reason her and the other girls live in a boarding school. This show doesn’t make any sense since their parents are alive so yeah odd series.

      @@batman200 Funny you mention that regarding the Metroids and Samus because in the late 80s, when DiC got their hands on Video Game I.P.s other than Mario and Nintendo, there was going to be a Metroid cartoon which would have featured Samus as a dude. (I know, I know, "But they don't reveal Samus is a woman until the end of the first game." This would have been 1988 (Looooooooong after Metroid was out in North America) when the idea for a Metroid cartoon came to be. And knowing DiC, they didn't play the video game so yeah...)
      Somewhere online, there's promotion pictures of DiC's (mostly cancelled while in development) Video Game Cartoon Line including a picture of the scrapped Castlevania Cartoon and an early photo of Double Dragon where BIlly and Jimmy Lee don't look as goofy

    Multiple factors of DiC's demise:
    * Children's Television Act of 1990
    * Cable networks like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon having original ideas.
    * Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon wanting nothing to do with DiC
    * Disney acquisition
    * Quantity over quality
    * Very little in the way of original ideas
    * Whenever DiC makes an original idea, they fail at every aspect. The only exception is Inspector Gadget.

    And speaking of DIC, by 2002, Lionsgate bought the home video rights to most of the DIC cartoons and released it on DVD. That was after Disney got out of DIC big time and ended the home video deal with Buena Vista Home Entertainment. These DVD's featured 5 episodes from DIC's animated series including the "Super Mario Bros." cartoons as featured on the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show", "Sonic the Hedgehog", "Madeline", "The Wizard of Oz", and many more. It also includes an "Easy Play" featuring Inspector Gadget where he helps you to navigated the main menu, and loads of other stuff. I love the part where he said "Button" and "Move the Glow" which is kinda funny. James & Mike from "James & Mike Mondays" did a "Super Mario Bros. Super Show" main menu review on Cinemassacre a few years ago.
    Sadly, the "Easy Play" feature didn't last long until it went out of print by 2003 or 2004 when Lionsgate ended the home video deal with DIC. By 2008 when Cookie Jar bought DIC and the merger, NCircle had the home video distribution rights to the DIC cartoons under Cookie Jar, and then a few years later NCircle got out of the home video rights to the DIC cartoons after DHX took over and released it in digital form, and on Netflix. You can find all of the classic DIC shows on Netflix. And I forgot to mention, after NCircle got out its home video division after Cookie Jar folded into DHX Media, Mill Creek acquired the home video rights to the entire DIC library and it still remains to this day as part of DHX Media and Mill Creek.
    And speaking of DHX Media, in addition to the DIC cartoons, they also acquired the Peanuts TV specials from 1965 through the 1980's. Both of these are now part of DHX Media.
    And I forgot to mention one thing, after Lionsgate lost the DIC library, in 2003, a company called Sterling Entertainment Group also acquired the DIC library until 2005 or 2006 before Shout! Factory picked it up. Sterling Entertainment Group was part of UAV from 2003 right up until the home video company went bankrupt and went out of business in 2006 and lost the DIC library to Shout Factory.

      I know, right! Especially that "game show", Save to Win. I recently voted on a site on which game show is the worst game show in history. Litton and especially Discovery Communications are the worst companies that not just spit in the face of nostalgia, but also nothing but Yes People to both the SJWs and Moral Guardians and to the freakin FCC itself. I may be for new technologies and streaming our favorite shows, but poor and middle class people deserve TV to be on the air, especially with cartoons. We need balance. And what these companies are doing are a direct result of taking advantage of our naivete and using real life events as an excuse to kill off animation forever. For SHAME!

That was kinda interesting. The song was released in 1985 due to the popularity of the cartoon series. If you have not heard this song, here it is.

Also around 1993-94 the Family Channel received a new package of Super Mario Cartoon reruns called Super Mario All-Stars, that was mostly reruns of both the 1st 2 Mario cartoon series and Super Mario World into one half hour. It was like an educational show. "Club Mario" was a summer replacement for the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show", and it was a disaster. It lasted for about one summer, and DIC decided that "Club Mario" will never saw the light of day again. A handful of segments from "Club Mario" exists on UA-cam, but the rest of the segments are completely lost. Too bad, DIC threw a towel at "Club Mario", because it sucked.

I wish this series had more episodes if Cookie Jar decided to continue it past Season 2, it's a fun series that I wish to see more of, way more than Cookie Jar's other show Johnny Test anyway. R.I.P. DiC (1971-2008) DiC was acquired by Cookie Jar, and folded Which was defunct in 2012. and it is now own by WildBrain (Formerly DHX media.) On June 20, 2008, DiC Entertainment and Cookie Jar Group announced an agreement to merge. it was completed in the next 3 days.
    and the company became a subsidiary of Cookie Jar Entertainment.[38] Shortly after the purchase, Cookie Jar would fold DIC into their own operations. Cookie Jar was in turn acquired by DHX Media on October 22, 2012. However, Cinar was solded in 2004 for $190 million to a group led by Michael Hirsh the founder of Nelvana, and was folded into Cookie Jar. In 2008 They agreed to acquire DiC Entertainment, expanding its library. On August 20, 2012, DHX Media announced its intent to acquire Cookie Jar Group, in a deal that would make DHX the largest independent owner of children's television programming. On November 28, 2013, DHX announced that it would acquire four children's specialty television channels from the former Astral Media for CA $170 million, consisting of Family Channel, Disney Junior (English), Disney Junior (French), and Disney XD. The networks were being sold as a condition of Bell Media's 2013 acquisition of the remainder of Astral Media's assets; its purchase of the networks marked DHX's first foray into television broadcasting.[18][19] The deal was approved by the CRTC on July 24, 2014, and closed on July 31, 2014.[20] The channels were incorporated into a new unit, DHX Television.
    In early 2014, DHX Media acquired Epitome Pictures, the producers of Degrassi, but Epitome did not own international distribution rights. In November, DHX purchased 117 children's and family titles from US distributor Echo Bridge Home Entertainment. The acquisition comprised about 1,200 half-hours including the international distribution rights to Degrassi, as well as Instant Star and The L.A. Complex (two other Epitome productions), as well as distribution rights to an additional 34 series. Other shows in the purchase included Lunar Jim, Beast Wars: Transformers and Emily of New Moon.[22] Nerd Corps Entertainment, a Canadian animation studio founded by former Mainframe Entertainment producers Asaph Fipke and Chuck Johnson, also the makers of Slugterra, was acquired by DHX Media on December 24.
    In April 2015, Corus Entertainment announced that it had acquired Canadian rights to the program library of Disney Channel and its associated brands as part of a deal with the Disney-ABC Television Group; DHX's existing deal with Disney, which covered programming across the four DHX Television services, ended in January 2016. DHX's Disney-branded channels were re-branded as Family Jr. and Télémagino.
    In August 2015, DHX reached an output deal with AwesomenessTV; the deal includes rights to its programming for Family Channel, along with plans to co-develop new, original content for DHX to distribute and merchandise internationally.[24][27] In December 2015, DHX reached an output deal with DreamWorks Animation, which included Canadian rights to its original animated television series, and a pact to co-produce 130 episodes of animated programming for the Family networks, with DHX handling Canadian distribution and DreamWorks handling international distribution.[28] Also that month, DHX established a development deal with Mattel to co-develop and handle global sales for content in the Little People and Polly Pocket franchises, as well as HiT Entertainment properties owned by them such as the Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam franchises, including television and digital video programming.
    In April 2016, DHX Media announced the formation of a new London-based multi-channel network under the WildBrain name.[30] On September 21, 2016, DHX cut a deal with Air Bud Entertainment (founded by Robert Vince) distribute the Air Bud library of 15 films, including the newest Air Bud production Pup Star.
    On May 10, 2017, DHX announced that it had acquired the entertainment division of Iconix Brand Group for US $345 million. The purchase gave DHX full ownership to the Strawberry Shortcake franchise and, more prominently, an 80% majority stake in Peanuts Worldwide.

I mostly knew them for Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff,, the Mario cartoons and Sonic cartoons that me and my older brother found on DVD. It always bothered me how they made Bowser and Dr Robotnik/Eggman look different than how they were in the games and official concept art. Especially Eggman, he doesn't have a cone shaped head, a pencil mustache and black sclera with red pupils like he's a robot himself.

    2:06:33 Narrator: They premiered 4 of them this year. One was another dub that nobody asked for. Goodness, they even got sued for making a dub. It was pulled off the air after 13 episodes. The remaining 3 are quite interesting. One being a licensed property while two of them being atro-oringinal creations. *one person claps* Let's start with the licensed property. Stargate Infinity, a show that isn't liked well by Stargate fans as well as kids for that matter. Then we move on to Super Duper Sumos. A show about sumo wrestlers who fight intergalactic crime using their boducs. *sighs* Craze me. It ran for some number of episodes until it was cancelled by Nickelodeon of all people. Then Liberty's Kids. This show followed the adventures of two teens and a boy witnessing the American Revolution. It starred many celebrity voices like Walter Cronkite, Billy Crystal, Annette Beninng, Arnold Shrawzsenegger, Liam Neeson, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ricky, Nicky, Dicky, and Dawn.
    Crowd: *boos*
    Narrator: You'll never take me alive, you sons of crazees!!
    Me: *laughs so much that my sides started hurting, ouch*

    Was the three minutes of logos really necessary? I mean, your editing is definitely solid, but none of the logos add anything to the main video. All they do is waste a significant portion of the runtime, and many people just don't have the patience or tolerance for that, and I imagine a few were turned off enough to leave the video. Lots of UA-camrs I know use logos at the beginning, but they generally make sure it's just one short logo (if they even use one at all), and that they don't go overboard. If you must use these logos, then I'd suggest putting them in separate videos. Cramming all of them into a single unrelated video just hurts that video.

    You know the only reason why The Wacky World Of Tex Avery even existed in the first place?
    So Tex Avery's daughter could make a quick large sum of money off her father's legacy while not giving a shit about the show's content in order to pay for her son's college tuition.
    Anyways, I'm almost finished watching. Excellent video Stephen, as always. :)

      AnimeGames16 I have not seen the "Wacky World of Tex Avery", but I've heard about the show, and it was too lame. Too many corny jokes and gags like they in the old days of WB and MGM cartoons that Tex Avery did at that time until he ended up with Walter Lantz, the guy who did the Woody Woodpecker cartoons.

    The notion that "The Get Along Gang" promoted "groupthink" and "conformity" has one small but crucial flaw, it's horseshit.
    The main intended messages of "The Get Along Gang" are that it's possible to be very different from other people and still get along with them and that "Many hands make light work". There's a representative sample of episodes on YT that can easily be checked out and the entire DiC series has been available on region 1 DVD since late 2016.

    • @artytoons

      Exactly. Being different is good and valuable with the Gang kids having different backgrounds and varied skills and being able to work as a team and being able to work independently when the opportunity presents itself at times...being obnoxious and arrogant and chasing away any friends and co-workers one may have with a "look at me, I'm different" attitude isn't. That is the crux of the *Getting Along* cartoon mesage. How many egos in the animation or entertainment industry or the average workplace or school clicque run amuck these days?

    To be fair with Disney DIC was just part of the package that was included when they bought ABC sane with ESPN and the A&E networks. That said, you would think that DIC could had approached Disney and ask if they could do an series based on something Disney already owned. To maybe help the tv division out or maybe have DIC be Disney's go to television animation division while they had them. But apparently Disney didn't want DIC but basically had to take them if they wanted ABC. At least that appears to be the case.

    There were a couple of short-lived shows that you forgot to mention in the documentary of DIC and they were both live action. There was a game show called "I'm Telling" that was a clone of the Newlywed Game but it had brothers & sisters that tell how much they really know about each other. It ran from September 12, 1987 to March 5, 1988 on NBC.
    The other show was Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad that was originally going to be PowerBoy. It starred Matthew Lawrence playing as Sam Collins who was the lead singer of a band called Team Samurai that suddenly is struck by a power surge during a recording session. Later on his friends used one of Sam's video games that was dubbed Servo and Sam is zapped again but this time it took him to the digital world where Sam has to fight the Mega-Virus monsters. His rival Malcolm Frink designed the monsters for Kilokhan that was voiced by Tim Curry after striking a deal that could not only destroy systems but could destroy the real world. It ran September 12, 1994 to April 11, 1995 in syndication & ABC.
    Good documentary about DIC!
