I remember one time I went to a restaurant and the meal I ordered had a band-aid in it. And when I informed the server they offered to make me the same meal. I actually wanted another meal (pricier) from the menu. And the server started giving me shit. All I said was to take the first meal off my order and I would pay for the other one no problem.
Realized that there was a chance he was going to just take the band aid out of my pasta and just give me the same plate. The manager ended up coming by and gave our whole meal for free. Sometimes you just gotta stand up for yourself

That is the time to do so because that means blood and whatever infection was on the bandaid is in your food and could make you sick.
That is actually standing up for yourself.
What isn't is when if the food wasn't on a certain plate you liked or something like that and trying to fire the server for it.

My dad has a 'full karen' mode. We call it "Call Germany" mode. No, this is not a WII joke. When he and my mom got married, they bought a truck. This truck broke down, wouldn't switch out of first gear. Takes it to the Mechanic. A week later, they say it's fixed but it still won't switch out of first gear. Cost about $300 (About $1,100 now) and this repeats two more times. Well, on the fourth time, they keep the truck longer. Dad is pissed off. Talks to the mechanic. Then the owner.
"Well, my part guy hasn't been able to get it for us."
"Okay, call the place you get the parts from." The owner calls the parts place.
"I'm sorry, we don't have that part currently."
    "Where does?"
    "Nowhere around here."
"Who do you get the part from?"
    "Germany."
    "Call Germany."
They ended up getting the part about three days later, and it remains my family's threshold for "How likely are you to become a Karen here?" which leads to a lot of fun conversations.

Just be nice and explain yourself. Servers don't care if your food is cold, they'll just tell the cook to do it again. The cook doesn't care as it's not his food cost. Don't talk to them like they just slighted your entire bloodline and you demand recompense.

    • @Shyress
      @Shyress 2 роки тому +1

Yeah, some people need to learn that its not just either beeing a Karen or getting stomped on. Combine both. Dont just sit back but dont be rude. Speak up and politely remind the servers that you are waiting for a long time or that the food is cold. Dont be a dick about it and just ask nicely. And if they then start to behave like idiots towards you, you still can go Karen mode if necessary.

I’ve worked at various pubs and the chefs do not usually take kindly to having to remake something unfortunately and that does make it uncomfortable for servers. The chefs will also get in trouble if things are getting sent back and their stock levels are down for remaking food. However yes, be nice. It’s already stressful for all involved. And we did give discounts to people who were polite about a big issue.

Spending < $10 to correct a mistake isn't an issue. Getting them back is key, especially in this covid climate where we're now fighting for more business. Not to mention the Karen climate where if there is a mistake on our end and we refuse to fix it or make a deal about it there are about 6 different locations where they complain that can get corporate to jump down your neck.
Telling a server to deny a customer request that is not outrageous is just bad business.

I work in retail management and worked in a rather unsavory part of town, and I would have to reverse Karen all the time. I never want to, but you have to be ready to go to war sometimes. Especially when the customers are insulting the employees and causing a scene. I blew up on a customer, full screaming mode, after someone called an employee an "ugly woman" and other racist remarks. It isn't fun and I hate doing it but sometimes people have to be taught that you can't just bully retail and service workers.

I work at a cafe in Target, and let me tell you that Karens are more common than you think. I get at least several of them a week, and that's not even counting the ones who are just sort of rude (which are at least half of the customers I get daily).
One of the worst Karen experiences I've had was around two weeks ago. This one middle-aged lady walked up to front counter where I was at and tried to interrupt me while I was scanning someone else's drink. I told her I'd be with her in a minute, but I didn't pay attention to what she was saying after that. After I was done, I (reluctantly) walked up to the lady asking her if she needed help with something. She started bitching about how her hot dogs were "too old," which was total BS because they looked completely fine. I asked her if she had a receipt, and she said no. I really wanted to say to her, "dude, if you don't have a receipt, I don't know any other way you can get your money back, especially since my coworker helped you pay for your hotdogs and not me," but I decided to be nice and say something like, "You would have to go to Guest Services for that" just to politely shrug her off (I don't get paid enough to deal with that BS). She started demanding to see the girl who rang her up for her hotdogs (AKA my coworker/friend), but I lied and said she was on her lunch break, hoping she wouldn't figure out she was just washing dishes in the back room. Then she threw her hotdogs at me. I couldn't do/say anything back because I'd risk losing my job and Target really wants their employees to suck up to the customers, so I passive-aggressively shook my head at her and even at my coworker who was watching the entire thing.
TLDR: A Karen threw hotdogs at me in a fit of rage.

I went 50% Karen once, im a type 1 diabetic that uses a device to give me my insulin. One day i was at a clothes stop in a local mall, thats where the device connects to me decided to leak and not give me large dosages of insulin. My blood sugar was high, so like a common courtesy I went to the dressing room and asked to go in and take a shot of insulin to help my sugar go down. I was told no, mind you this is during when covid was getting bad but not bad enough to close stores yet. I went to another employee and they told me the same. Mind you I explained my situation in detail and said I would only take a sec to do what I wanted to do. Finally after talking to the second employee I asked for the manager. I talked to the manager and the manager just gave me such a bs excuse why I couldn't use the changing room for a medical reason. And like I explained to the manager i don't care if I didn't have to but would they turn those who are in worse situations away? Pretty much they said no one can use it for non changing purposes. Got home, told my mom what happened, she emailed HR of the company and a person from the HRs company emailed back saying how bad that situation was and how sorry they were and how their kid just was diagnoses with diabetes to so things will change.

The for my other medical issues there is usually at least one employee who will help out/ let me in an area not designated for customers if needed. Easiest example is when I was given a code to a nursing room so I could lie down to let my blood pressure go back up to normal human levels.

There was a point in time where I was going to a doctor every few months or so because I had started taking anxiety medication and I think they have to monitor you while you take a prescription, so my mom would drive me over to the office, I’d get a check up, and I’d go home. Well, one day I went in the day before my prescription ran out, and I go up to the office while my mom waited in the car. I got to the office, sign in, and then as I hand my card over, the receptionist says “oh, I’m sorry, we changed our insurance coverage, so you’re going to have to pay out of pocket.” I was 19, taking a gap year out of high school, and had no job. I couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket for the visit and a prescription refill. So, panicked, I call my mom up so they can talk it out.
Keep in mind, my mom didn’t like this doctor. She would often make us wait for long periods of time before coming to see me, and something about her just rubbed my mom the wrong way. So my mom comes up, they explain the whole insurance thing, and my mom went into a sort of Karen mode. She wasnt rude, she wasn’t mean, but she was firm. She explained that I needed my medication, and that they never notified us of an insurance change (don’t know if they just forgot to email us or if it got lost somehow). So the office itself would be at fault if I didn’t get my prescription. So I ended up getting the refill, and now I see a new doctor who’s very nice and is very supportive of me while also telling me my needs.

Months later, went to it with my friend, the place wasn't too crowded. I figured the service would be better. But in the end, our whole experience there took 2 hours. At one point, we're just waiting some of the items to come out and when it's just not coming, we asked a waitress who's like "oh its on the counter and no one's picking it up". Idk what's she really expecting telling me that. That's also after she went to check, and she didn't even come back with the food. We decided to let that go, because hey, we still got our food. But then, my friend's waiting for one of her orders and it's also not coming out 2 hours in. We finally asked and apparently it's out of stock but it's still logged in as an ordered item. i have a time that i remember going full karen. it was thanksgiving morning at 2am and i wanted some food. the only options at that time were either jack in the box or whataburger and though i did think i wanted whataburger i ended up going to jack in the box. and my brother ordered with me. low and behold i spent 19.04 for us and i was really hungry. went to the store, when i already had paid, to tell me that their machine wasn't working. not the food machine though it was just the cash register and they refused to give me my food. so i was like ok then give me a refund and they also refused that and said there wasn't a manager in so i went to another jack in the box and they said since it was another location they couldn't give it to me either. so i ended up having to go back in the morning and demand to see a manager cuz like they literally screwed me over so hard. and it took like a hella long time for the refund to come back, and although i didn't end up making someone get fired i really was debating it cuz like i really wanted my food and my money for being so wronged.
and that is the story of why i'm never gonna go back to jack in the box. fuck them.

One time my dad while on vacation took us to a Chart House, which is a pretty nice seafood/steak restaurant here in the states idk if its anywhere else in the world. But either way, we booked our reservation, we got there, and the waitress was sitting people down that had arrived WAY after us. After not getting a table for like 45 minutes to an hour, my dad went Karen mode (ironic because my moms name is Karen) and demanded a manager, the whole thing. Its not the angriest I've seen him but its definitely in the top 3. We got a free desert for our troubles and now whenever dad is getting heated we warn him not to "go Chart House on us."

I don't want to be full karen mode... but some places are just asking for it. Here's an example of me blowing up on public space:
My internet didnt work since morning, calling via phone wouldnt connect me to human rep. I really really need that connection so I went to the ISP office to file a report. The place is full, I told the officer waiting at queue ticket machine about my problem and he told me to get queue number and wait... which turns out about 2 hours of waiting. and the Customer Service be like... "I'm sorry sir, that area is having maintenance and you can only wait"... wouldnt it be much2 better for that officer at the queue ticket machine to inform that some areas are currently undergoing maintenance and I can only wait... instead of making me wait 2 hours only to tell me about it?

one time we were clubbing in paris and this bouncer was clearly having a power trip because he wouldnt let one of my friend back in "due to club rules" even though we saw other people going back in THROUGH HIS INSPECTION after a smoke. On our way home my parisian friends told me he was a notorious bouncer and that the club couldnt easily fire him for authority abuse due to french employment regulations.

Bruh I remember I was in middleschool and I had stayed late for a club activity or something and was really hungry so we ordered pizza. But after waiting for forever the pizza guy never showed up. So we called the place and they said he came but didn’t see us so he left. And so I asked why he hadn’t even tried calling since we were sitting in a very visible area and the pizza guy never showed so he was obviously lost or something. We told them to come back and actually deliver our pizza because we were hungry. However once again the pizza guy claimed he had come to deliver and didn’t see us, and left. Not bothering to call at all. Originally it was one of my friends handling the calls but I just took the phone and went all Karen. I was so pissed. Like bruh because of this guy and whatever manager who didn’t make the guy correct his actions after wronging us the first time a group of eight 10 year olds were starving and our parents were mad at us when they came to pick us up because it was late but we had to wait for this imaginary pizza to be delivered that we payed for.

So a single dude like that is seen as a higher risk. (Obviously Garnt is not that type of person but the bouncer doesn’t know that)

I've been known to go full Anti-Karen, but only for a good cause. When I see someone mistreated it just sets me off. I was born with a sharp tongue, a quick mind, and an unfortunate tendency to speak it, but I try to use my Karen powers for good. Be rude and demanding to a waitress? You'll hear from me. Insult a bus driver? Better hope I'm not there. I will not stand by while people who are simply doing their best get abused, especially if race, gender orientation, economic position, or disability are a factor. I'm a middle aged, white women, living a comfortable life. I feel obliged to use that privilege for good.

I’ve gone “full Karen” a few times but it’s always been times where myself or whoever I’m with at the time had been dubiously dealt with in an unjust manner, tldr never for no reason. I’m pretty chill but I’m jus also not a pussy, so if ur fucking with us in an egregious manner, I’m gonna stick up for myself. eg; an entertainer made fun of my wife while she was getting food & she came back to our table complaining to me that one of the entertainment staff belittled her. Like wtf?
I was damn near bouta beat his fucking ass but the manager came over & explained to us that he thought she was one of his colleagues.
If it’s a situation like ur food comes late n there’s not much u can do about it stuff like that that’s fine. But if I’m sitting at a dinner table & my server is being an absolute turd to me cuz he’s have a bad day, I’ll straight up tell him shit like
Stop taking it out on me, I literally had nothing to do w ur shit day. They usually clam up n stop being rude after that

Connor you're never going to get anywhere with a 10er. min is 20p and it's a skill you can lean but you do have to have a certain level of charisma. As "influencers" that should be easy. just strike up a conversation and slip them the money when it feels natural to pass something off to them. Also if they don't go for it either it will be returned under the guise of an accident (if there nice) or that's their tip for checking you in. Either way never expect to see any money you let go of back. Then you just move on. If for some odd reason you meet the odd one that'll be like *cough* *Cough* aka more. don't do it, it's always trouble.

I worked at reception for 5 years and another 8 years in customer service. I've had unsatisfied customers, but NEVER anyone going full Karen. Why? Because it's my job as a service clerk to have empathy. People only get upset when they feel that you don't understand their problem and you're down playing the issue. So if you deal with a lot of Karens, that means that your customer service is shit.
I've gone full Karen mode many times because of clerks not giving my complaint the proper attention and seriousness.
