Repairing a Marshall Origin 20. This guitar amp came in with an intermittent fault. Not always easy to sort out on a PC board amp. We also take a look at how well this amp has been made .
I bought the 50 watt version and can say it is a great gigging amp. The board layout out is better on this than most other manufacturers. Most faults on newer amps are dry or cracked joints, some from poor workmanship/crappy leadfree solder and some from abuse. At this price point , this is a well made amp and sounds great at higher volumes. Great vid :)
My favourite UA-cam amp channel. Yet, I don't even know your name, history. It would be great if you did a video and introduced yourself proper. Great to hear you play guitar. Best part of your vids. Greetings from Canada.
Hello Greg, thank you. My name is Martyn. I do appear on the teaching videos. I will do a video when I get a minute. Thanks for supporting the channel and take vare Greg.
Common to most mass produced amps now. Sold on the sound and looks with no consideration for longevity. But my experience of the Marshalls is that they are better built than their competitors.
This is true David. And modern amps are not really made to repair. You can replace the boards till they make them obsolete. But you are right Marshall are better than most. Thanks for watching and take care.
I had a laney cub 12 (older model) with 15 watts and 2 EL84 tubes and 3 12ax7 tubes. Even when bised cold with the adjustable bias (53% of dissipitation) and 300V on the EL84 tubes, the tiny transformer would get hot after half and hour.. after an hour really hot and I could hear the amp becoming "soft"... I think the problem was the heater current. probably around 2.45A... I think the Laney had another cub in the line up with 2 12ax7 and 2 6v6GT tubes.. (that has a total of around 1.55A current draw on the filament). Probably the same power transformer..
Hello. That's good info. It does make you wonder whether anyone actually calculates the current, or whether they just trust to luck. Thanks for watching and take care.
Hello, It might help a little bit but I think it would still get hot inside the cores The 401 is a good sounding amp. Not looked at one for few years. That's good stuff if it cooled things down a bit. Thanks for watching and take care.
Hello. If you want it for home use then they are okay. I don't think they would last long being heavily gigged. These types of PC board amps have a limited life span, but to be fair that is reflected in the price. Thanks for watching and take care
I’d bet $20 the fault on that board was due to loose nuts on those pots. When you pushed down on the corner of the board they’d lose ground. It took no effort to take the nuts off.
Hello Kenny, it could have been. I soldered a few joints that looked iffy, but the pots were a little loose. It hasn't come back in, so at least it's cured. Thanks for watching and take care.
Aw gee sus in the repairs department already ! I'm really interested in the 50w model BUT, my 79 Marshall mk 2 50w master vol 2x12 combos have given me over 40 years of trouble free gigging, WELL ? why would I spend good money on an amp that I couldnt trust, cmon MARSHALL make them properly, there is something very wrong when you cannot trust these newer amps.
Hello Rick. The newer amps are built like laptops. You get a few years out of them and then you buy the newer model when it comes out. You can't go wrong with a Marshall MK 2. And they hold their value, unlike the newer amps. Thanks for watching and take care.

Hello Richard. Yes I thought it was a good amp for the money. Never tried the 50 watt. I bet that's a cracking amp. Thanks for watching and take care.
@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher Yea and R7 is a stupid weak link on this amp, needs a 5w in that pos!

Would a small computer fan help cool down the transformer? Just guessing. I had to put one inside my Marshall 401 it helped a little

I have always wondered if Jimmy Page named the Led Zeppelin album Presence after the presence switch on Marshall amps.
Hello Ernest. He may well have done. Thanks for watching and take care.
would you recommend this amp? I admire people who can fix this stuff!

Boards hung on pots are always risking issues.
Yep, a real pain in the bum. Thanks David. Take care.
Doesn't sound like it would handle performance volume very well for very long. These things have to be played loud to properly fill out.
Hello. I think you are right. They get mighty quick. Thanks for watching and take care.
hellow my friend ... The inside construcction for this origin is good?
Hello Claudia. Yes good.
@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher thanks... Are You recomended those complements that are inside?
