Holy cow, what a money saver! I bought this unistrut (it only came in 10' length, so I have extra) at Home Depot for $16. I used bigger lag bolts and washers because my tv is 55" and weighs a ton. The main reason I went with this option is because I have a chimney on the opposite side of the wall I wanted to mount my tv on. I couldn't drill into it, but by using the unistrut, I cut a longer piece and attached to the studs outside of the chimney. This allowed me to mount my tv so that it was still centered on the wall regardless of the stupid chimney on the other side. Genius idea! Thank you so much for sharing!
Just bought a 50" flatscreen, and was looking for a simple and cheap way to mount it on a wall, and was thinking of something along the same lines except did not know about this unistrut bar. Excellent idea; I think I got my solution. Thanks for sharing this.
I want to thank you for this video. My TV is an old Plasma that ways 65 lbs. To get a wall mount cost about $100 in my area. Buying the bolts, washers, the strut, and hack saw cost me $26 total. Borrowing a level and the tools from family I was done in an hour.
1-5/8 in. x 16 in. Galvanized Strut Channel or Unistrut is what it's called. It is available in shorter or longer lengths. It can be found in plumbing if it isn't in the electronics section at Home Depot.
another thing is if you go to home depot they have these cool wall plates that have a flexible rubber section in the middle with an X cut in it so you can pull all of your cables through it while still keeping a clean look. They also sell HDMI extenders which have a female on each end so you can put two cables together for running them inside the wall since most hdmi cables arent long enough to go from your receiver/console down to the wall plate, up through the wall, then out to the tv
Great video I was actually trying to come up with a tv mount using unstrut, then I found your video I have to say that is the simplest and easiest way to hang a tv can't wait to do it
I wish I had seen this video before I spent money on a "tv mount" system. I'm returning that stupid thing and going with this! Great idea! I'm sure TV mount manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank with consumers buying their mounts for 3-4 times what a few raw materials at Home Depot would cost. Thanks for the DIY tip!
Def doing this! One thing I wanna try is to make the wallmounted unistrut about 2 inches wider and then pinch the very ends a bit to deter the tv mounted unistrut from sliding out of it. I read your comment below about it being unlikely the tv could slide off. I have kids so I just want to be sure it's not going anywhere. I imagine it won't pinch easily so that'll be the difficult part. I'll see where I get with a hammer.
Good idea. Another way, for the longer piece of strut on the flat screen, cut the flat surface of the strut 1/4" in at the outside of the left and right sides then bend it inward. That would stop it from sliding off too.
I like your idea for mounting the tv. I also like that plug for hdmi, etc. Never saw that before. Like to watch my UA-cam videos on my tv sometimes instead of my mini laptop. Great ideas! Keep posting!!!
Hey Kennis, thanks for the great idea! One comment though, I think I would rework that extension cord you have running through the wall. Pretty sure the fire inspectors will have an issue with that. I have a 42" I want to mount in my office, I'm thinking this is the way to do it, thanks again.
they have wall mounts at home depot that are only 80 bucks and you can pull them away from the wall and turn it whatever direction u want and they arent terribly hard to install as long as you are somewhat handy with power tools and a stud finder. When installing mine it was in my mobile home and the walls are wood paneling so you cant really use a stud finder so i had to find them the old fashioned way but it turned out perfect, getting it in a stud and getting it level are the most important parts. I got mine almost perfectly level but it wasnt perfectly straight with the ceiling line but no problem because you can tilt it to get it just right I thought about going the DIY cheap route but with this mount you cant pull the tv away from the wall which can be a pain in the ass when you need to plug thing into it down the road after you hang it on the wall
New sub here and I just love your idea. The thing is I wonder if my home goods store will cut metal for the customer me 😀🙆🏻♀️ I just got permission to have my tv on the wall and also he suggested my roommate to hire a pro to do this but after seeing your video I prefer a DIY project I can do while being quarantined! I hope I won't forget to mention your name and you're channel😎
I have an 80 lbs 52" Tv and was wondering if you would recommend using only the 2 holes in the tv or should play safe and go with 4 instead and use 4 unistrut? I love your solution, it is such a great solution. Cheapest stands are about 60 euro's here, which is stupid.
Electrical code do not allow extension cords to be run inside a wall. I use surface mount cord keepers for any extension cords. Better yet, I prefer to install a new standard outlet box where needed. Just fish standard 12/2 (20amp circuits) or 14/2 (15 amp circuits) standard jacketed solid wire. Try to run the circuit all the way from the main circuit breaker box with 12/2 with ground wire, whenever practical. - Better to be safe. Extension cords are not safe inside walls.
+salvatore stonelli - Good grief. Freemen are free from freethinking I guess. Shall I take you to electrical wiring horror story videos of "freemen" who nearly burnt down their houses being "free"?
Im thinking of tryin this with my 60 in. However i was wondering..... there are four holes on back of tv for a mount. Is it safe to only use the top two holes. Is the inside structure of the tv going to hold up
So would this hold a 50lb 60" if I had them cut wider also what size screws did u use for the wall and tv thank u this is a great 👍 idea I hope I'm able to use this method of a mount
Maybe tack in some self tapping screws into the steel strut on each end so that way it doesn't slide off one way or the other by kids. Also with a new TV buddy you might want to put a surge protector
OK what's the name of all the materials you used on this project I have all my tools but I need to get the materials from home depot so if u could provide me with a list I would really appreciate it
I know you say under $20 in the description, but i assume a piece of profile and two screws won't cost you more than $5? The disadvantage is that you can't adjust the angle neatly (just put a dozen coasters behind it). And you have to be sure you mount it horizontally. But a decent simple idea.
If you use a flat piece of wood about three quarters of an inch thick and mount that on the wall first, and the uni strut on top of that, then you will get quite a bit of wiggle room to be able to adjust the TV angle and the struts will still stay locked.
You said the white wire coming out of wall looked geto, but its against building code to put the wire into wall. when running wires/cables into wall, they need to be rated to do so. This includes speaker, HDMI, power, etc.. its a fire hazard and if anything happens insurance will find it. Its not about current going through cable its what material its made of.
Great idea! I was on my way to "Big Box Store" to drop $69 for a wall mount. Question. I wonder what's the "capacity?" I'm getting a 51", net weight, 49 lbs. Will it hold? Thanks for the great idea and video!
This is pretty cool but walmart.com does have lots of wall mounts for under 20 dollars. They have 1 now that is $9.99 thats supposed to mount TVs 25 to 42 inches and it even comes with an HDMI cable! They try to get people to spend a hundred bucks on one in the stores but theres tons of cheap ones online.
I know it an old UA-cam, but for $39.99 at Harbor Fright you can get a adjustable, moveable wall mount. Easy Install, 20 minutes top. Will hold up to 75 inch or 130lb. Good Luck.
Thinking about doing this, however I'm wondering how my cables in the back will work. Mine's a bit older than the one you have, so it's also a bit thicker and my power cable sticks out about 1.5" to 2" from the back of the TV. I'm thinking that if the TV is just hanging there, the power cord will cause it to push out near the bottom (could be wrong though). Just curious if you came across that. Love the idea!
+Ryan Francis - Mount a 2x4 on the wall first and screw the unistrut on top of the 2x4. This way the TV will also be tilting forward a bit, and give you a more suitable viewing angle if the TV is high up on the wall.
question: if you buy a separate wall mount, the good thing is u can move it up and down, but does a separate wall mount needs you to drill the wall too?
Mount your TV to the wall so that it gets hot and dies an early death, then you are out a TV or have to buy another and you're left thinking "I shoulda bought a proper mount that let me swing the TV away from the wall while in use." Heading off comments: I met a TV repair shop woman. She said most of her jobs come from people who flat-mount their TVs to the wall. "They over heat and I get more business."
+Erick V - The BIGGER the TV the more expensive. You should put spacers in between the wall and this strut so your TV doesn't die of heat stroke and then you're trying to take it back down again.
Want your TV to face a little more downward, use a unistrut with a longer height ( like 1 5/8) on the wall, TV or both. The one shown here looks like 3/4 in.
I went to home depot and found the unistrut but they only carried it in 10 ft lengths and wouldn't cut it down. How can I get 20" & 30" pieces? What's the best way to cut or where can I get it cut?
I've literally mounted hundreds of these tvs professionally, and this is an excellent idea...
put both my kids' tvs up for $16.83 in 20 mins. perfect!! thank you

I love UA-cam so much! People are brilliant.

Tip: if you don't wanna buy the unistrut, the back if some dressers have it to hold the mirror :)
Noice
Brilliant idea! Saw this video 2 days ago and now my 60in plasma tv is on the wall.

Great tip, I’ve got a tv that I’ve been wanting to mount in my garage without spending a lot, this will work perfect.
What a great idea. It looks very stable and secure too! Thanks for sharing Kennis!
Great video I was actually trying to come up with a tv mount using unstrut, then I found your video I have to say that is the simplest and easiest way to hang a tv can't wait to do it
Brilliant. The wall mount I bought for $33 covers up the cable connections on the back of my TV, so I'm going DIY. Thanks.
What and awesome, simple, inexpensive alternative to the crazy expensive mounts-- thanks!!!

dont try to squeeze the strut, just drill thru both pieces and put a bolt thru both pieces of strut.

Now that is very very clever. Thanks Kennis.
Because of you now I can hang my tv's... Thanks a lot
had a similar idea, but I like the materials you used way better. Thanks!
Ingenious! Thank you for this. I'm doing this for my TV and soundbar.
This is so clever! Perfect! Thank you.
Regards from Portugal.
So i go to homedepot but they had it instock but extremely long and they dont cut it down to size so how did u get yours cut?
Dude you are awesome. I seriously love you right now. Coolest youth pastor ever!
I can not believe how easy that is. HAHA! Awesome DIY
Thanks for sharing this, it's pure genius
Great job man, thanks for sharing this!
Very useful! Thank you for taking the time to make this video! :)
great idea. Im trying this tomorrow.
Love your music Blake... can't wait till u start touring again😂
Thanks dude. If it's cheaper than gas...I am all for it.
cheaper than gas, i am always bloated
Man this is awesome! Thank you so much for this DYI tip!
He looks like Blake Shelton's big brother.
Alyssa Elemen ... I thought the same thing !!!! lol
Dude, Im sayin!
Alyssa Elemen Lol. I was just about to say that.

Great video. Kennis I thought you were going to make a video of your Godin XTSA gk settings on the GR 55

Great job ... keep it simple and smart. look good hive five !
Nice job , I'm going to do that
Omg you remind me of Blake shelton...lol...great video...thank you for the video...I'm going to use this
great video man!! Thanks!! I will be doing this today thanks to you!!
Great idea.. thanks for posting!

This is the best idea! I plan on doing it very soon!! Will the hardware store cut the unistrut for me?
Excellent tutorial!!! Much appreciated
great idea man! thank you!

+Mark Farmer He actually addressed that in the video.

Excellent video....thank you sir!
BRILLIANT!! Good old American Ingenuity! you rock!!! I am subscribing!
great idea thank you for sharing!
genius
this is bad ass, fantastic idea and i'm a genius i know.
+Cop Perry - Yes, you are all geniuses. Downright Einstein.
Nice. Clever.
OK what's the name of all the materials you used on this project I have all my tools but I need to get the materials from home depot so if u could provide me with a list I would really appreciate it
awesome video man, you just saved me a bunch of money!
Well done thanks for the tip.
Very good idea man

hey thanks so much! Has anyone ever told you that you look very similar to Blake Shelton? Because I swear you do!
Genius! Thanks man 60 inch goin up!
I would spray it black just because
great ideal...I like it!!! Thanks
Just did this, thank you!
I'm attempting my own pallet wood book shelve. Are those good for hanging something like that?
***** I suppose a better way of saying it is what's a good way to hang shelves?
You said the white wire coming out of wall looked geto, but its against building code to put the wire into wall. when running wires/cables into wall, they need to be rated to do so. excellent
Hi Kennis, Is there any chance we can make it tilt?
question: if you buy a separate wall mount, the good thing is u can move it up and down, but does a separate wall mount needs you to drill the wall too?
***** Ahh,aight, thanks for the reply man, good video anyway!
How did you mount the sound bar....nice vid..
Kool.....I will try this weekend....I have a auvio sound bar from radio shack....It has small holes in the back to mount it...thanks.
Do you think this would work on a rv with no studs?
this is cool, im doing this!
Epic video, is it a problem that I have no clue what size bolts my tv uses? (It didnt come with any)
Great video, Third option, google specific model of tv it will tell you the type of thread and screw length.
Yeah, in Chinese!
Did you use toggle bolts?
Mount your TV to the wall so that it gets hot and dies an early death, then you are out a TV or have to buy another and you're left thinking "I shoulda bought a proper mount that let me swing the TV away from the wall while in use."
Heading off comments: I met a TV repair shop woman. She said most of her jobs come from people who flat-mount their TVs to the wall. "They over heat and I get more business."
I could see maybe on a plasma TV but the LCD and LEDs dont get anywhere as hot
Love it!
did home depot cut it for you? if not, how do i cut it?
Awesome! You saved my butt!
I have a 65inch tv lcd you think it will hold it like you did it? Thks great idea its weight is 74lbs
+Erick V I would screw into the studs behind your wall and put (3) 1/4" toggle bolts into the bracket mounted to the wall for extra support
+Erick V - The BIGGER the TV the more expensive. You should put spacers in between the wall and this strut so your TV doesn't die of heat stroke and then you're trying to take it back down again.
I wonder what the Weight limit is on these bars, I'm planning on mounting and 46 and 60 inch.
thanx
***** steel
Kennis is absolutely right! The weight limit on unistrut is pretty hefty. it's a staple in commercial construction. Been using for years.
Thank you
Thank you!
Want your TV to face a little more downward, use a unistrut with a longer height ( like 1 5/8) on the wall, TV or both. The one shown here looks like 3/4 in.
Great idea, but just help others understand clearly, the dimension you referenced is depth, or thickness, not height.
How do you keep it from just sliding off?
I went to home depot and found the unistrut but they only carried it in 10 ft lengths and wouldn't cut it down. How can I get 20" & 30" pieces? What's the best way to cut or where can I get it cut?
+MrNokars use a hacksaw
Know your lengths in advance, bring a hacksaw with you to Depot, cut it to size in the parking lot, place in car.
awesome man! Thanks for sharing!
