    Famous North Korean Movie Serie in 58 parts
    Part 1 of the Episode called "Choe Hyon Dok"
    Released in 1992
    Plot: Choe Hyon Dok is indulged in anti-communism nearly all his life. At the end, he is forsaken by the nation and lives in exile in a foreign country. But in the embrace of his beloved home, his motherland he finds the genuine way to resurrection and contribution to the nation at last.
    Choe Hyon Dok played by Choe Chang Su
    In his work "North Korean Cinema - A History" Johannes Schönherr writes about the series:
    "Parts one to four, released in 1992, make up the first section, titled Choe Hyon Dok. According to the North Korean booklet on those parts of the series, "The film ... shows how the main character Choe Hyon Dok, who has followed an anti-communist path and is roaming about in an alien land like an 'international orphan' in the twilight of his life, deserted by his fellow countrymen, finds the genuine road of life, the road of rebirth in the embrace of his dear home and fatherland.'
    In fact, Choe Hyon Dok was based on the life of Choi Duk-shin (Choe Deok-sin) (1914-1989), who was born in North Korea and had served in the Southern Army during the Korean War. The division he led committed at least two major massacres on South Korean civilians suspected of aiding the North during the war. He became Foreign Minister of South Korea in the early 1960's and later ambassador to West Germany. In the 1970s, we was a leader in the Chondoist religious movement, a Korean peasant religion, and got into problems with Park Chung-hee because of this religious activism. In 1977, he went to exile in the U.S. The U.S. is the "alien land" referred to in the North Korean film description. In 1986, he relocated to Pyongyang and advanced there to 'chairman of the Central Committe of the Chondoist Chong Wu Party, vice chairman of the Committe for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland and chairman of the Korean Religionists Council.' " (Schönherr, 2012: 117)
    "The basic content of "The Nation and Destiny" is that the destiny of the country and nation is immediately the destiny of an individual and that the life of the latter belongs to the life of the former. Those who want to shape their own destiny truly must consider the country and nation as the base of their life and the nest of their happiness and love them ardently they must find the worth and value of their life in devoting their all for the independence and prosperity of the country and nation" - Kim Jong Il

    It is way way better than i expected, the quality is better than most canadian tv/movies at the time, it really shows how much Kim Jong il loved cinema to prop up the industry so much...

    Believe it or not, some of this was actually filmed at Cologne Bonn airport in former West Germany (it's apparent it's not stock footage)

      @@younot-ez3xr I don't think they used permits. Some places were very crowded (notably in Paris), and scenes shot in Canada were mostly in quiet streets.
      Although at some point the main character drives a convertible and you can see that he isn't wearing a seatbelt, something illegal at the time.

      I've seen all the parts that are available. Unfortunately a few are censored. Parts 1-19 are very well made, by the eminent Choe Sang Gun & co.
      Parts 26-36 I'd say is 6/10. The story is a bit repetitive, the actors are good but not extraordinary, cinematography is average. Not my favourite parts let's say.
      Parts 46-51 are interesting. Mix of historical and action. Really interesting, I learned a lot about their guerilla things against the Japanese and etc..
      Parts 52-60 are imo the best. Kim Jong Hwa and Kim Ryong Rin are the best actors for that story. There are mutliple timelines and stories at the same time, but they all are well interlocked and crafted. Ri Chun Gu and Pak Jong Ju outdid themselves.
      Parts 61-62 are grandiose, but the story is stale. It really came to its end. Actors are great, directing and cinematography also. What I liked most was that it ended in a way that didn't leave you feeling empty, like if the film had good hopes for the future.
      Overall, it's a big watch, but if you have the time and patience I really recommend it.

      HamZang Why is it that the tens of thousands of movies and series made by the US that contain references against communism, Russians, etc, are ok and are never considered as propaganda? Hawaii 5, most Chuck Norris' movies, the Interview, SALT, etc The never list of US propaganda films is neverending, but I never read any comments saying that they are propaganda.

    • @cutealiens
      @cutealiens 9 років тому +4

      S Mart Probably because, last I checked, none of the companies/individuals who produced those films worked for our government. US propaganda was produced by the government during WW2 and such, but not much since. So no, The Interview isn't "US propaganda". Unless you think Sony works for the government and produced the film in an effort to "convince" Americans that North Korea is hilariously evil (hint: we don't need convincing).

    • @kjpop1
      @kjpop1 9 років тому +5

      That's immaterial.

    • @kjpop1
      @kjpop1 9 років тому +10

      That's immaterial. A cultural product becomes propaganda when it attempts to spread information that is not impartial, trying to influence the audience and further an agenda. It doesn't matter if it was funded by the government or a private enterprise. The US doesn't need to generate state-funded propaganda anymore, there are numerous film production companies willing to do the work privately because they support the same ideals (capitalism).

    • @kjpop1
      @kjpop1 9 років тому +7

      The Interview is not US propaganda. It is simply rubbish. I mentioned it before because it tries to be propaganda, but the script is not intelligent enough to really be propagandistic. It is not funny. But the same can be said about most of today's Hollywood movies. They are simply rubbish. I like some old anti-communist propaganda films and series (Hawaii 5-0, etc). I would say most movies about the Vietnam War are propaganda because they distort facts on purpose. However, if they are entertaining, I will watch them, even if I consider them propaganda. Most Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal are a bit propagandistic. But rather than propaganda, I would say that they are patriotic-nationalist films. It is perfectly fine for a nation to create this kind of films. But if they are just senseless rubbish, like The Interview, I am not interested;
