I had been using a telescoping monopod from Walmart with a small bean bag cushion on top.
I can adjust my height as needed and only my brush touches the canvas - but I think this technique is WAY better.

WHY is he painting when it's in a frame already
+Jack Walsh HI there. Not sure if this helps but Clarence uses board rather than canvas to paint on (he doesn't think canvas works very well if you are doing detailed work). It may be that he was going back to an old painting to refresh it, or possibly he was just doing it for the video...
Perhaps just as an aid in demonstrating the subject of the video - the mahl stick and how he uses it. Or it could be that he is repairing a work in a frame. Or he just wanted you to ask a silly question since there are so few of those.
Sometimes artists touch up work after its been hanging.

Thanks, I was looking for a video on proper use but like these tips. Working in my basement, I've embedded a magnet in the tip of the ball for handy access hanging from pipes above.
