  • Who Is Hans' Father? The Disgusting Truth About The King Of The Southern Isles | Disney's Frozen
Though he’s remained unnamed as far as Disney is concerned, Hans’ father, the King of the Southern Isles, was a terrible person and treated his youngest son far worse than an evil stepmother would a stepchild. It’s no secret that Hans had a tough upbringing, as he explained to Anna in the first Frozen film, but after reading the novel, “A Frozen Heart,” by Elizabeth Rudnick, it’s clear that his father didn’t do anything to make his life any easier. In fact, it was the opposite and it turns out that the King of the Southern Isles has a terrible secret involving the treatment of his lastborn son.

It definitely does "not" excuse his actions; although after knowing his backstory I could definitely see (if they bring him back) being able to have a redemption arc. Especially when compared to other Disney villains'.

Well, Hans role in the story is also very different compared to other Disney Villains: he fools the audience because the whole situation is not about him, he had many obstacles in his way and his "plan" had to change costantly in response to a series of unexpected factors.

@@lucagz6481 I know that; a long with what he said about his own brothers on top of the fact he was actually being a good leader in both Anna & Elsa's absence already made him stand out form other Disney villains. Plus hearing more of his backstory really gives him potential for a redemption arc. Which would be nice to see since we really don't have any Disney villains that I know of (that weren't sidekicks or henchmen) to have a redemption arc.

@@MaryC861 True, no Villain has ever being redeemed. Most importantly, those few cases known about disney movie bad guys getting a redemption come from the Toon Studio sequels, so no-canon movies.
And I sincerly think this would be useful also for the other characters ...

I would love to add in that Hans was following the ORIGINAL story, and had a bit of ice/mirror lodge in his eye/spirit (depending on the version you read) to alter him temporarily. It would explain the stark change from when he tried to save Elsa from the Wesleton baddies and he suddenly had her in a dungeon. Perhaps it was dislodged when all was melting and Anna belted him. It would be nice if he was able to escape his toxic family- or be put in charge of that country instead of them (because, who better deserves an uprising?)

Hans genuinely understood Elsa because of what happened to him, and he only meant to marry into the Arendelle Royal family to "find his own place" and get away from his own awful family (unlike the Duke of Weselton who intended bad from the start but people seem to forget that). Hans got desperate and made a really bad choice in Frozen, but TBH look at the history of Royals in real life history, also marrying someone to get a better position in life was the normal thing to do for nobility- so while of course I don't condone his behaviour I do understand how he ended up going bad. There is even a genuine Frozen comic where it shows the comparison between Elsa and Anna and their happy family in Arendelle before the accident /separation, and Hans as a young boy in the Southern Isles at the dinner table with all of his brothers and they're being mean to him even then and letting him only have leftovers - so apart from the Frozen Heart book - and in the movie (where he admits to Anna how his brothers treated him then look at his face when she thinks she is getting engaged and says she wants to invite all his brothers) there is other evidence that Hans suffered abuse from his family and yet Disney continue to use his character as a punching bag, especially in Frozen 2 - it's so sad! I think Hans should be redeemed in frozen 3. They originally planned to redeem him in F2 before they changed the story again. I want to see him get a proper redemption arc without dying - just because someone had a bad upbringing and made bad choices does not mean they are forever an "irredeemable monster"

Thank you so much for saying this. I hated how the Duke of Weselton got away at the end (if I remember correctly) I share the same opinion I think it just proves the bad writing and plot holes the movie had. Like to understand Hans behavior better we had to read the novels and stuff. Also I don’t like how he’s treated like a punching bag, like you said, I don’t find it funny at all (if that’s why they do it) honestly his character is messy because he’s not a good villain I hope he has a redemption and improve his character

I remember hearing that Hans also had a cruel step-mother in addition to his hard hearted father. Although, those just might be rumors. And although his behavior was awful in the film, it at least gives him a logical reason as to why he’s like that.

I hate how they wrote Han's character. Yeah, Elsa came from messed up parents, but Hans did too... they could've had Hans have a serious redemption arc to show that just cause your parents are bad, doesn't mean you have to be. Nope, instead they made him a terribly written villain. And everyone for some reason has poor taste cause they really loved this movie.

Before watching this, I thought Hans was an entitled prince who used his charm and good looks to get what he wanted. It looked like he had instant chemistry with Anna on the day of Elsa's coronation, but when the opportunity presented itself after Elsa struck Anna in the heart, Hans seized the chance at taking the throne by letting Anna die and killing Elsa. His plan fails when Anna defends Elsa before becoming an ice sculpture (literally), and Elsa thawing her with the sisterly love shared between them.
After: Hans now comes off as a desperate man who wanted to prove to his family that he wasn't as weak as they said he was. Turns out he tried to bite off more than he could chew when he began planning to take over Erendel. The main reason Anna and Elsa's bond was strained was because of their father, who separated the two following Elsa accidentally hitting Anna in the head with her ice powers (Anna was jumping faster than Elsa could keep up, which led to the incident). The two reconciled following Hans' defeat and Anna's thawing out thanks to Elsa.

As bad as his life was he still made the choice to hurt someone like he had been hurt. He could have decided to show his family up by simply ignoring them or just disrespecting them himself maybe even playing some pranks of his own on his father or brothers minus lars anything from string nylon webbing all around their rooms tied to different sticky and or messy stuff that would humiliate the father and brothers that were cruel to Hans that way hans could have gotten back at his family minus Lars and his mom and no one but those who dished out pain and cruelty would have been hurt.

I came up with a partner for Hans. Her family once ruled the Southern Isles but Hans family stole the thrown. For years, decades they were treated as if they didn't exist and forced to work as servants and slaves a the while people believing they had died out. The girl also great power too but it wouldn't hurt Hans. Being extremely wealthy and becoming very popular in the peoples eyes the King isn't thrilled. Hans meets her when she gets rid of everyone he arrived with as they are just as bad as Hans family. They be come partners and marry, his father and other brothers hate it but not Lars or course. In the end lets say that Hans gets his thrown. Oh and there is more to it. Happy ending and redemption but still dark before we get there.

Afterwards, Elsa and Anna admit that he had a far worse upbringing than they did and sponsor his move to another, friendlier country.

Hans' redemption does not mean that Anna should return to him after all. Anna and Christophe are in absolute love, they are literally married. Anna has already learned lessons from her relationship with Hans, she will not need him, regardless of what kind of person he will end up, because she already has someone she really loves.
Hans' redemption arc is only about Hans, it will not affect Anna in any way with her personal growth.
