I think it's actually commendable that Disney made Carlos canonically at one point pass away.
They clearly realise that recasting Carlos would be very disrespectful to the late Cameron Boyce, since they also knew that no other actor could bring the character to life.
It's in the same vein of why Marvel chose not to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa and made T'Challa canonically pass away in the MCU, as a way to give respects to the late actor.
Edit: In other words, it's a way to give conclusion to Carlos's story (albeit not a happy way) and not interfere with it anymore. They can mention it, sure, but not change it, and I think that's what matters.

It's even more than that, when the original Author of the books was writing them, she had based Mal around Dove and Carlos around Cameron. Carlos' character was literally written for Cameron to play him. No other actor would be able to play him because she wrote him as Cameron.

When William Hurt passed two years ago, Disney chose to recast Thaddeus Ross instead of killing the character off.

I think they would honor him whenever possible.. He will always be part of Descendants, and in all the programs where he participated

You can see when she's biting her lower lip and trying her best to fight back the tears...it's not easy when you lose someone close, be it family or a close friend...the important thing is to keep moving on in their memory because that is what they'd want you to do...not to mourn but to rejoice that you were fortunate to have that person in your life and all the good times you had together and cherish them in your heart.
Hell, I never watched another Cameron Boyce did, and even my eyes stung. I’m definitely gonna watch the Descendants movies because of this
So amazing they honored Cameron/ Carlos may he rest in peace. Sometimes though I like to think that Carlos died from a heroic sacrifice.

Ah, damn it. Why did they have to make me cry in the beginning of the movie already?! Right away, you can just tell that when Uma looks at Carlos' picture, that China isn't acting but those are real and raw tears that she's desperately trying to hold back. She and Cam were thick as thieves, and from what I heard, working on this movie helped her to accept his passing just a little bit easier.

"Do it for him" felt like a way as China was saying the Descendants movie was "continuing" even without the original cast as an honor of him because that's what he would've wanted which makes it so much more meaningful.

Fun fact: Cameron Boyce voiced the titular character from Jake and the Neverland Pirates, a Disney Jr show from my childhood which was a spin-off of Peter Pan! RIP Cameron, thanks for making my childhood! ❤️❤️
I kinda wished that the Neverland Pirates or Jane (from Return to Neverland) were in Descendants! Hook and Smee were in it, I would at least like Wendy’s kid or Jake and his crew to appear!
I honestly loved Jake and the Neverland Pirates when I was little especially season 4 where Jake became a captain. I also wish we get to see them as well as their children and the rest of the Peter Pan characters attending auradon. Skully(Jake’s parrot) would be like “Cracked Crackers! This place is such a beauty!”

Cameron/carlos part really made me emotional! Such a talented and smart young man taken from us too soon.

Its such a beautiful scene and you can just tell that the actors emotions are their true emotions not just acted ones. It must have been hard to get through this scene and i reckon there were alot of tears after filming.
I also just want to say that i know people are annoyed that they put carlos as dead because cameron boyce died but i think its a lovely memorial to him because then they can have things like this which clearly mean alot to them ❤
I’m not annoyed. I understand why they did it. Not a lot of people want Cameron Boyce to be replaced by someone else. So they just wrote Carlos off kind of but they still wanna honor him. We will miss him.

China and Cameron were really close so I’m glad they gave her this, but I don’t recall Uma and Carlos really interacting much so it does feel a little weird, even if she does a fantastic job.

I still cry when I am reminded Cameron is gone. I may have never known him personally, but the way his family and fellow cast members speak of him, I wish I could’ve. And now, I wish I could give all of his friends and loved ones still grieving for him a big hug.

The tribute to Cameron at the beginning of the film was really well done, it made me cry every time I’ve seen that scene so far and I have a feeling it will continue to make me cry, and Im just going to say that they handled it very well 🕊️😭

Carlos was a great character in the Descendants franchise. I was heartbroken to hear that he passed. I cried when I watched the short film of Mal and Ben’s wedding as Mal said “I wish Carlos was here”.

I think it only makes sense that they address the character canonically passing away. Even if it's been five years, they aren't the first to do it. It's smart and respectful to everyone who cared for him personally and as a fan. Besides, I don't know if China would still be involved in the series if they recasted Carlos.

This reminds me of As Told By Ginger when actress Kathleen Freeman who provided the voice of Mrs. Gordon passed away in real life, normally they would find a replacement to keep the character going, but they didn't do that. The studio commemorate a farewell memory to both the character and actress simultaneously because they realized there won't be another actor who could pull off that specific role, and Cameron Boyce is no exception. 🥺🙏

This made me cry cause i remember when the news came out that he passed away from a seizure and not only that we were the same age and i have epilepsy so having seizures is a daily thing. He taught me to appreciate life more cause you never know when it could happen to you

Harry Hook probably took over as the captain of Uma's crew and is sailing the seas with them since Uma was shown here to have become the new principal of Auradon
Carlos passed away and Jane mourned his death with Dude and the two of them decided to do "acts of kindness" in his memory
but only Uma is in Auradon with Fairy Godmother was her "educational advisor", the others are away from Auradon for the time being
