She gets the day off from practice to spend time with her brother. Well, she's not emotionally ready to practice NOW. Plus, her brother may only be able to be there for a short time. A very understanding coach.

He seems to have great respect for veterans and their families.
@Dave Chappelle I don't, I just assumed. My brother was in the navy and he used pretty much all of his leave to spend Christmas and New Year's with the family. I don't know how it works but I do know that when someone is serving and is gone for a while, friends and families do wonder if they're alright and if they'll ever see him/her again. That's why they go so emotional when they return to visit. Also why the coach knows she should have the day off to spend time with her brother.
One time my girlfriend and I were at a Bulls game and during half time a woman thought she was going to get a chance to make a basket while blindfolded for a chance to win $10,000. But when they took her out on the court, they took off her blindfold and to her happy surprise, standing in front of her was her son who had been gone for a year on active duty. Quite an orchestrated surprise.

I know a lot of you say he looks much older than her but he could be. You know, it's not unusual for parents to have newborns when they already have teenagers. He's also got a ring on his finger which probably means that he's married, too. So I don't think being in the marines has aged him.
