AS Art exam sketchbook - A* (Full marks)

- Hi everyone! I completed my AS (first year A-level in the UK) art exam earlier this week and I wanted to share with you my sketchbook leading up the final 8 hour art exam, in which you draw your final piece on a larger scale. You are given 8 weeks to create this sketchbook. This years theme was 'Earth, Air, Fire and Water: The Four Elements' and I chose to solely focus on water. I researched 4 artists overall before refining my ideas further.
I really hope you enjoy this video and it gives you some ideas. The art exam sketchbooks have the same structure as coursework, it just has to be completed in a much shorter time frame!

Whenever I watch these kind of videos I try tell myself i could do (better than) that, but with yours I kinda gave up within the first thirty seconds.

Seeing your sketchbook makes me wonder how I didn't completely fail my as art
Totally different from here in the USA... Ours is a portfolio form with loose drawing papers and few paintings. We start on it in any four years in high school to prepare for sending it to art schools of our choice. Plus some schools don't have any good art teachers just someone who hardly knows art. UK seems to have better luck with schools including Japan... I'll try out this gcse art format as a personal project, might help me in a way.

Ikr! I can't do that. I still got a sketchbook that I got in 2013 and I still have complete it. I think it got over 100 pages

Art is very subjective. I'm sure yours is amazing in its own way too.
Art is subjective is a Modern Art cop out for mediocre stuff...
Art has always been subjective. What you find to be beautiful, I might find to be horrid. I'm sorry that you don't appreciate modern art-- I really don't find it to be pleasant either-- but, just because you deem something as a "cop out," that doesn't at all mean that it really is. Not everything needs an edgy comeback.
Sure.... Is not like I don't do this for a living...
That certainly doesn't give you the ability to change the very nature of art.
I love your sketchbook. I too finished my As level art and what a coincidence but I did a very similar approach to you. Your sketchbook is amazing.

I tried to use the four elements as my theme for my AS sketchbook, but my teacher is very critical and told me this idea was 'too simplistic' and gave me 'colour psychology' instead, clearly it isn't too simplistic given the fact that you've explored the theme really well and produced some amazing work!!

wow this is so awesome! I did the same topic and looked at Alyssa Monks also but ended u painting a landscape in the end. I work so differently in my sketchbook so it was great to see a different style going so well, I bet you get top marks :)
Genuinely gobsmacked at your work, it's so different seeing the other systems and how they do higher levels of art, I'm doing advanced higher art this year,( scottish qualification, above higher - which is the equivalent to A levels? I think?) but you have so much more connections to other art sista and work focussed on them- we just paint and design shit that matches our "theme" funny thing is I started out wanting to do "the elements" too... Now I'm just lost with my theme haha

You're incredible! Inspired me to do Alyssa minks themed final piece for my GCSE Art exam currently. Sounds crazy but your icon/photo looks like the kind of thing she's paint and I don't have a model for my final piece, maybe you'd be interested? Just an offer x
I dropped out of AS art and, I kinda failed my AS exams so now I'm just taking UAL L3 Art course, at college and I need to make sure I get a D
GCSE in UK is so different compared to Singapore :/ for one, we put our developments/exploration etc in A1 boards and we dont redraw an artist's work before trying it out for our own art :o

Well this is only a small section. The sketch book is only one part of examination it's like an experimentation book (well for my exam board anyway), all students still have to produce photoshopped work, 3D art and A1/A2 pieces.

Have you ever considered using grids when doing faces? Maybe using a projector to get the proportions just right... Just notice some of the noses tend to look elongated or oversized...

It seems you really have a talent for Art, I hope you got the grade you definitely deserved. I'm about a third of the way through my Higher - Scottish equivalent of A levels - Art & Design course and what I've been producing doesn't even measure up to half of your artwork. Did you have really good teacher who helped you with the structure and development of your booklet or were you left alone to do this on your own time? I have my own booklet that I need to complete to pass a module and I'm at my wits end with it.
