I still remember my Match Day way back in 1987. I was applying to Family Medicine, and had gone back and forth a lot on how to rank my top two choices. They were very different types of programs--one was a large inner city public (safety net) hospital based program, and the other was a smaller suburban hospital based program. I had reasons that I liked each of them. I ended up placing the suburban program 1st and the public hospital program 2nd, and figured I would leave it up to God and the computer algorithm. I matched at public hospital program, and had 3 of the hardest but best years of my life there. This was very early in the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. My MICU rotation was almost all young men with pneumocystis pneumonia on ventilators. One of my peds rotations happened during a measles outbreak and included an isolation room with children hospitalized with measles complications. 35+ years later, I still love what I do, I still practice within 5 miles of that hospital, still see almost the same patient population, and still have 1 patient that I see in practice who I met during my residency clinic time.

An amazing share. I knew before I read the answer that you would be in the inner city and you would be out through the paces and love it and be all the better. It is like a movie. Art imitates life. Thank you for your service. I lost a lot of males friends to AIDS in the 80s. Thank you for your service. You are an angel.
