And if plants did feel pain - eating vegan would be even more valid since a huge amount of plants must be fed to livestock animals before they are slaughtered. It is an incredibly inept and silly argument.

I answer that question this way: To the best of my knowledge plants do no feel pain as they are not sentient. However, go slice a stalk of broccoli and then go slice the throat of a pig and tell me if you notice a difference…

@Andrea Lev Thanks Andrea. Stick with it. Get rid of oil completely & just have small amounts of nuts, seeds & avocado. Are you eating more of a whole food, plant based vegan diet. If your eating processed vegan food, biscuits, ice cream etc then you won't see big improvements. Acquaint yourself with Dr John McDougalls book "The Starch Solution". Dr Michael Greger's "How not to Die". Dr Neil Barnard. Dr Joel Furhman. Brenda Davis RD "Becoming Vegan". All excellent resources. Hang in there, you will see results. We are all different so it may take a little longer for some, but I urge you not to give up.

I'm embarrassed how I ate food products laden with nutrients thinking it's making me healthy. I believe the media is so powerful it changes even fundamental ideas. I happened to see a video about weight loss on the whole food-plant based diet and I do think a big part of failure is due to media's impossible expectations. I think it's safer when much media influence is avoided carefully and I do so using various methods. Even the entertainment we consume shapes us so I have been much more careful on the type of films and shows I watch.

I dislike and distrust Fuhrman these days for those bogus EPA/DHA studies he cooked up to peddle supplements in recent years (thank you for enlightening me about that, too, Mr. Nelson), but the other doctors were being unfair to him here.
Everything he said was in perfect alignment with what they were saying, he just added additional information that didn't contradict them in any way.
He agreed that an active lifestyle and WFPB diet are unequivocally the way toward better health for everyone, but that for a very, very small percentage of the population with certain mutations, certain supplements would be helpful or even necessary if administered in a conservative and measured way.
Take Primary Carnitine Deficiency (PCD), for example. About 1 in 40,000 people around the world cannot make their own carnitine, meaning that if they don't want to die, they have to either take a carnitine supplement, or eat small amounts of animal products on a regular basis. I'm sure there are similar mutations that we haven't discovered yet, but you would never see that by only looking at the epidemiology.
When you start examining individual differences with modern genetic techniques, it becomes clear that what works for most doesn't work for all, in the sense that WFPB diets do work for all, but that some people also need additional supplementation.
And the link between high salt intake and hemorrhagic stroke risk was valid. Dr. McDougall totally missed the point on that one.

@@aocplusme5676 Dr Fuhrman promotes the use and is clearly in favour of supplements because he sells them and has done for many years. None of the other doctors directly benefit financially from the diet they are promoting, which is a whole food plant based diet.

Wow. I admire John Mcdougall for the work he has done, but he is selfishly biased. He actually stated that “he knows the truth, and if the science doesn’t fit his understanding he has to figure out why and how their wrong”! Great scientific thinking doc. And his comment about raw veganism being made up mostly of “fats and sugar”?? Maybe he doesn’t realize that the vegetables he advocates have a similar high carbohydrate (“sugar”) as does other fruits. All are around 80-90%+ carbs. But yet HIS starchy carbs are better than other fruits and vegs. He’s a hypocrite and cannot bear to consider any other perspective other than his own. Shame for such a bright mind to be so closed.
