Now, months after the head of the army said Britain should train up a "citizen army" ready to fight a war, Rishi Sunak is proposing 12 months of mandatory national service.
Labour has criticised the pledge as "desperate" and "only needed because the Tories hollowed out the armed forces".

I don’t understand why people are so afraid of national service, from what I’ve read and heard it’s either from
A) People don’t have a single clue what national service entails or what it is
Or
B) they don’t want to get their lazy A off the couch and lose some weight.
I’ve had mates go through and currently going through national service aboard (it’s really not uncommon) and they’ve loved it, taught them skills, builds confidence, increases fitness.
The two main concerns I have is B the budget is not there for it especially with this Tory government and the other being the lack of facilities to support it.

I am 100% young British male. I am too lazy to fight for this country, i would rather play COD on my PS5 where i can respawn. I heard in in real war you cannot respan back to life apparently. I've taken 20 days off work aready this year, because of "illness" ;-) , I cant imagine in the national service.

It's insane. As a French citizen, I completed my national service in 1996 in the military. I was in one of the last contingents as it was abrogated in 1998. (1) Those with connections either did not do it or landed in cushy jobs (posted at embassies in clerical roles, no guard duty there). So much for equality and bridging a fragmented society! (2) Graduates were treated as cheap, educated labour by professional NCOs, most of whom did not even have the baccalaureate, could barely write, terribly racist and stupid. And you had to accept taking orders from these idiots like slaves. (3) Posted in filthy barracks. Disgusting food. Fancy finding worms in your green salad because it was not properly washed by a fellow conscript! (4) Those graduates who extended their national service by 3 months for officer training were considered worse than privates by professional NCOs. No benefits there. (5) That one year (it was 10 months at the time) delayed entry into the world of work. Everyone counted the days until "Liberation". Everyone hated it there. (6) Terrible salary. Back then on £120 equivalent per month! With one return train ticket back home a month. No perks, nothing. (7) Who would want to serve for an institution that serves greedy politicians who wage illegal wars? There is no such thing as society anyway as the Tories remind us!

I don't think most of the journalists covering this are really listening to who they're interviewing. It's not mandatory military service for everyone, there is a choice of military or civil service.
However, forcing people to work without pay for any reason is pretty sketchy.

The idea of “mandatory volunteering” is an oxymoron. There is a reason why Western Democracies moved away from national service and conscription. Having a professional military of people who sign up and want to be there produces a much higher quality and is less wasteful. Training disinterested people for 12 months is a complete waste of money.
Training to be cannon fodder was never on my list of " Things I want to do when I leave school ".

If you want to have an impact on young people, invest in a youth service, not national service.
Growing up in London, I remember a comedy show called "Get Some In," which was about reluctant National Service recruits causing havoc in their barracks. This is another ill-thought-out plan by the Conservatives to return to the past and not consider young people's futures.
This old elites and MPs are living in bubbles, not the youngsters. That is unbelievable.

Let's be real here. There are just over 715,000 18 year olds in the UK. In this scheme, according to Welsh Secretary David TC Davies, there would be 30,000, 12 month, placements in the armed forces. This is nothing more than a way of getting 675,000 people to provide free work to support sectors they refuse to fund properly.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. The Tories are imploding. A fox in a trap chewing its own leg off.
For some people, the old National Service was the making of them. My own father experienced life outside his abusive family, for example. For most, though, it was, according to my dad, a waste of time.
This scheme does not sound any better. For a start, how can they say "volunteering" if there will be sanctions for those who don't comply? A more accurate term is "forced labour".
Then I would like to know where many 18 year olds would get the time from to do this work. Many attend university, and have to work at weekends to keep their heads above water because politicians do not value education enough.
Having worked with volunteers, I know how much additional work they create. They can only be given the most basic of tasks, otherwise other people have to stop their own work to supervise.

They may run a constituency surgery to allow people to speak to them, but from the experience of people that I know, they show little interest and quickly palm the constituent off onto a junior member of the team. The average 18 year old probably knows more about the real world that the average politician.
I can't imagine that the army is best pleased at the thought of large numbers (was it 30,000?) of squaddies turning up untrained and unprepared. Had they wanted to join the army they would have done so. The military are already underfunded, yet Sunak wants to give them additional responsibilities.
A half-baked plan which is way too expensive and appears to have more problems than positives. Some young people will benefit, but the majority will not.

Once you did military service, you're much more likely to be conscripted back into service (and most likely go to war) later on in your life.
Ukraine just conscripted all 25-60 year old men, and those who had prior military experience were the first to be conscripted.

I live in Belfast in the six counties that the UK insist is still part of the UK. My Grandchildren will NOT be any part of the UK's national service. Apart from that, surely the people in the UK can see ex-service men and women have been so poorly treated, with many left homeless, including those with missing limbs.
And how they treat those kids before they reach 18.
Child poverty in the UK is at over 30%, and as high as 72% in some areas. Over HALF OF THE CHILDREN IN THE UK ARE STARVING AND LIVE OFF FOOD BANKS.
Then the government wants those same children, they have forced to starve and live in poverty, to get conscripted into forced labour for two years as soon as they reach adulthood.
Geezus, the young should not stand for that, neither should anyone.
