I enjoy watching your podcasts. Very laid back. Your answer about gauge was the absolute best I have heard. Thank you for giving your time to share your love of fiber!
Really enjoying your podcast. I am with you - short tips hurt my hands as well. And i can only knit so much with linen and cotton - there just isnt the give that wool has. Blends are a great compromise. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. They are really fun to watch. :)
Try putting a wide rubber band around the wheel that has the shaft on your ball winder. I used double stick tape and a wide band like you'd get on produce (broccoli), then placed the rubber band on the vertical edge of this wheel. This provides some extra grip between the wheel and the "spinning top" shaped piece. Hope this helps you also.
I can't do short needles either. I asked for the Lykke interchangeable needles for Christmas and my husband accidentally bought the 3.5s. I decided to try them but I couldn't do it. I had to send them back and exchange it for the 5in. I love the 5 inch set!
If you decide to knit a Shaker sweater, you might try the two-round pattern where you *P1, K1* on the first round, then *P1, K1 Below* on the next round, and continue in that sequence. I am currently knitting the Soft + Cushy Hat, which is a free pattern from Purl Soho, and that is the two-round sequence used. The fabric has a thick but cushy Shaker look and feel, very nice.
Idea for your yarn storage. Rescue a china cabinet or corner cabinet from habitat resale or goodwill. Might be cheaper than buying wood. You can paint it to match your decor.
I have the same winder and not really thrilled. The cakes would collapse into a bloody mess. I learned from another podcast to turn it counterclockwise. That sorted it. I haven't had ir slip like you but the wheel to the right rises out of its connection. I end up using my cheapo pladtic one.
I look forward to your videos! I have tried so hard to learn to knit, and I am unsuccessful every time. I am a Crocheter tho! I have been crocheting since middle school, and I just recently got hooked lol now I cannot go anywhere without my yarn❤️ you inspire me to actually complete a knit 😢project one day
Have you tried learning Continental knitting? I am a lifelong crocheter and found it easy to learn Continental style after MANY failed attempts at English style.
I knit continental and purl using the Norwegian purl. Look up UA-cam videos for both. You don’t move the yarn to the front when doing the Norwegian purl. It’s a life changer for me.
I struggled with the same, Katlyn! Like others have said…. Continental style knitting with Norwegian purling was how I was finally able to overcome my years of failed attempts as you can keep your yarn in your left hand just like crocheting! Now I can’t stop knitting and it is easy to go back and forth between crafts! Don’t give up! It is worth the effort to find your groove and what works for you! ❤
Kaci! I just found you and am so happy. You hooked me at your first "y'all". Oklahoma neighbor here. You mentioned fish tacos and gluten free. Have you ever tired using zucchini flour? I don't know how well it fries but I thought it was worth mentioning especially since y'all garden too. 😁
Kaci! Every time you post a video and I catch it I can’t help but smile. Really, there is something so unique about your channel that just draws me in. and every video you seem to notch up! You are the best. ❤️
I too have a big problem with my wooden winder ( not the same brand) I was told when not in use to “undo” the band so it’s loose but I try to do that but still have trouble. Plus even though I’ve “cranked” the winder to the table it always loosens and moves around. If you get any ideas please share in your next video. Love your podcasts!!
On your ball winder. I bought one just like it on Etsy, found out it was from India and very poorly made. He rubber part ended up breaking 😢. I just threw it away. I now have a fantastic one from Fiber Supply Company. When using your mini Chiagoo needles, I find it helpful to use a short one and a longer one together. When I first got mine, I hated them and sold them. However, I bought another set and use them all the time. I have the Red, Blue and Yellow set of the mini’s. I love your podcast and I look forward to watching it each week. I’m originally from Missouri and used to go Arkansas all the time. I live in the Seattle area now.
Omg kaci. First: my Ball winder broke too. I have the same just by another company. And suddenly it just makes sloppy donuts instead of cakes and I can’t figure the heck out of it. The company does not help me and the warranty was just for two years and I have it for about 3 years…. Now I’m looking at the one from ashford.. but yes it’s so annoying. Second: also don’t like magic loop and also swear to my non interchangeables because I like the fixed ones better. 😅 please can someone help us with our ball winder problems? 😂
Regarding the ball winder, try wiping down the band with some rubbing alcohol or vinegar. It might have some oil residue on it. You can also take some fine sandpaper and clean up the grooves the band fits in. If it was waxed or sealed it could be slipping on it.
Worked on my spinning while I enjoyed your chat! I have a Lendrum and I was plying some undyed BFL it’s super bouncy which makes me so happy and it softer than my last BFL spin (I got this from the Woolery) I had to laugh, I store my stash in clear sterilite bins, same as yours😅. I don’t mind it because I can see it. Mine is organized by weight. I am paranoid because several years ago we had a carpet beetle problem (from some bird seed!) and they ate some yarn 😢 so after that I moved to bins. Some day I will go back to some type of better, prettier storage.
Thank you for all the great answers to the questions. I do have one that drives crazy when I see a good pattern that I want to knit but cant always afford the yarn what should I look for in another yarn for substituting. Thanks Kaci for sharing
Have you thought about checking out antique shops or estate sales for a yarn cabinet? I needed a moderate amount of storage in my kitchen and found a pie-safe that was perfect. Happy hunting!!😊
I have a wooden Fiber Artist Supply Co winder & when I am not using it I release the drive band so it doesn't get stretched out. I only put the band on while I'm winding, not sure if that is the problem with yours.
I have a winder like that type. When not in use I take off the band around the wheels and I leave it around it but not attached to save it. That way they last longer. I think you need a new band.
@@YoungfolkKnits I’m thinking if it came with the band attached when you received it, it must be it. I bought 2 extra bands to have on hand. I love the way the wood winder looks so much on my little table that is worth the cost of the bands to keep it running well. I so prefer the wood to plastic. I’m sure you do too from watching your videos!
❤ I have the same problem with the ball winder. Oiling helped, and slowing down too. I think you will love Holstgarn Coast, it 55 merino 45 cotton, I use it a lot doubled, because it’s lace weight, and than I can get a DK pattern gauge with it. Such lovely lightweight projects it gives.
I bought that yarn winder and had to return it. My plastic winder isn't so pretty but it works. I also despise the small tips. They hurt my hands so much
I work at a yarn store and consensus is the yarn windera with a belt suck, they wear out so quick and don't wind as well as fast as the ones with gears unfortunately
Maybe it is an idea to contact the manufacturer, because normally the concept work well. Having a wooden ball winder myself, the advice to release the belt, when it is not in use. And check the bearing, it should have very low resistance.
The first lykke ball winder i got wound really terrible cakes. Half the time they were super lop sided. I did reach out to them and they sent me a new one, and they tested it before sending it out. However, i think the Stan wood ball winder would have been a more reliable one.
My wooden ball winder never worked for me it runs fine without yarn but I never can get it to work like the plastic ball winder. I bought the wood one after my plastic one broke, thinking it would be better because it was wood & expensive. I ended up going back to plastic. Every now & again I try the wood one to see if it will make a ball but always get a messed up tangled mess. Your podcast are great.
There is a bit of a trick too it. Your ball winder needs to be in a straight line from the swift to the tension rod. I feel like Lykke needs to do a tutorial on how to Set it up. Also too much tension isn’t good.
The problem looks like the friction between the band and the wood of the small cog is not good enough so the band slips and doesn’t turn the cog. You could try taking the band off and putting a rubber band in the groove so it fits snuggly but is not over stretched. This might provide enough grip to solve the problem. Please let me know if it works. xx
Oh my goodness, I felt like I was alone with the Lykke ball winder!! The driveband on mine snapped for no reason, and it did the slipping problem straight away, even though I wasn't leaving the drive band on it when not in use. They don't even sell replacement bands, and the Knitpro ball winder's drive bands don't fit. I'm so mad that I spent so much money on the Lykke winder, thinking it would last me forever, only to have it break within a few months. I'm still trying to work out what to use to replace the band, so if anyone has suggestions, they'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for sharing your recipes and your advice on gauge and swatching.

I just discovered you. You just made my Saturday morning knit a wonderful time. I'm hooked😂 You have a new(but really old) subscriber!

Thank you for taking the time to explain the nuances of gauge. So so helpful 💛

You are just too cute. Love the Oscar Wilde quote at the end. I very much enjoy knitting while you chat away, thanks for making these videos.
Such a nice episode. I love your new sweater! Enjoy the spring!
The recipes sound good. Enjoyed the Q and A. Good luck resisting the test knits.

Have you tried learning Continental knitting? I am a lifelong crocheter and found it easy to learn Continental style after MANY failed attempts at English style.
Yes! I have heard continental is easier for crocheters to learn! I wish I would have known that!
I knit continental and purl using the Norwegian purl. Look up UA-cam videos for both. You don’t move the yarn to the front when doing the Norwegian purl. It’s a life changer for me.

I feel the same way about short needle tips. I have a 5 inch chiagoo interchangeable set and I adore it
I missed last weeks because I was out of town. I will have to go watch it now. You had me at Yarn. (not that I NEED more)
Watching this while working on my Weronika test knit too! ♥️

By far the best gauge explanation I’ve heard. Thank you very much for answering those questions!! 😘
I love fish tacos too!!🐟 Your sauce sounds delish and a must try! Thanks for the chat! I sure hope you get to finish you test knits!!🤞

Great episode! Thank you.
that cayenne color of your store bought sweater looks great on you. If you work up that shaker knit sweater, I'll be the first to buy the pattern!!
Great chat Kaci
Favorite time of the week. Always goes by too fast. 💗

Thank you for today! On clue 4 of the MKA22….sooo slow going for me.
You should do a mini vlog type series or maybe just 1 video of the process of building and organize your yarn cabinet ❤
Lykke are really good at sorting problems in my experience. Get in touch with them x
I need to!
Thank you for all the great answers to the questions. I do have one that drives crazy when I see a good pattern that I want to knit but cant always afford the yarn what should I look for in another yarn for substituting. Thanks Kaci for sharing
Around 12 minutes I definitely hear your animals in the background and I loveeeee it!!
Oh my gosh! That stinking rooster sits at my window and crows! Constantly. 😅

Hello from St.Louis Missouri!
Hello Janet!
Have you thought about checking out antique shops or estate sales for a yarn cabinet? I needed a moderate amount of storage in my kitchen and found a pie-safe that was perfect. Happy hunting!!😊
Yes I have! It’s been hard to find anything reasonably priced but I’m always on the lookout 😂
I greatly enjoy your videos while knitting. I also can not use short needles comfortably.
Glad you like them!
Thank you Kaci 😃👏🏼🧶 I knitted away on my little denim baby overalls while listening 👏🏼👏🏼🥰
That’s awesome!!
I have the exact same ball winder and also hate it. Doesn’t work well and was quite expensive
Stay strong Kaci - at least until March 31 so you can get that test knit sweater done. Lol
I so enjoy your podcast! 😊
Thank you

New to your podcasts! Love them ❤ Unique with practical ideas!
Welcome aboard! And thank you!!
I love using the left hand needle as a shorter needle and the right hand as a regular 5" one. No digging but I can still use my 16" cords!
That’s true!! I always forget to do this

I totally feel you with the Lykke ball winder!! I’ve just given my plastic ball winder away and my Lykke is starting to lose its grip 😭
Maybe it is an idea to contact the manufacturer, because normally the concept work well. Having a wooden ball winder myself, the advice to release the belt, when it is not in use. And check the bearing, it should have very low resistance.

I have the lykke ball winder but don’t have that problem. That is disappointing that you can’t use it :(
I need to troubleshoot
Just curious... you've mentioned your husband is a musiciatian... do you ever use any of your husbands music in your episodes?
Definitely think that Lykke should be replacing your ball winder!
I think so too!
Have you tried bamboo needles with cotton/ linen? My joints like that better.
I do have some Lykke wooden needles!
Taylor of Wool Needles Hands said the ball winder you showed was her biggest mistake of her purchases.

Oh no! Im so sorry! Maybe you can contact them?
if you make you cabinet out of cedar wood it will protect your wool from moths, as they hate cedar.
Place a rubber band on the turn table and then put the drive band over the rubber band, it will not slip anymore
That sweater you are wearing is the backside of half fisherman's rib.
Yé no tattoos! I am the same no tattoos! I feel as if we are one of the fews…. I am just perfect like I am Lol
When I’m not using my ball winder, I take the rubber band off.
That’s good advice!
