An Overview of Video Glitch / Synth Gear Makers in 2021
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Until now, there's never been a video that covers the many artists and engineers producing analog video hardware in the present day. This is intended for viewers both new and familiar with the analog video art scene, and will be especially helpful for those looking for custom analog video hardware for the first time.
I've divided tools into two categories: glitch processors (usually circuit bent) and video synthesizers (usually original circuits). Take with a grain of salt; there is definitely some overlap.
Don't overlook DIY Kits! It is always possible to build glitch gear and video synths yourself. Many of those mentioned even sell kits for you to solder together. I'd say before you rush into buying some expensive hardware, explore with what's possible with a kit, or mix and match video / audio signals yourself using basic, cheap, electronic components and some wires. You can achieve super cool effects just with an experimental attitude. Remember, there are no right answers, only creative ones!

single knob mixers you can build yourself at almost no cost. The ones Statikstruments and some others sell are (in my opinion) overpriced, but to be fair Statikstruments also sells circuit bent colorizers and noise enhancers which are a bit more sophisticated... just know the difference.

I'm trying to reduce the amount of "polite" but non-engaged subs I have, to help my channel in the algorithm. Thanks.
Lars (LZX) has estimated that the niche for analog video artists is extremely small- like 1000 people worldwide. It’ll be cool to see it grow and vids like this really help :)
yo yeah its definitely going to grow! and i think there's many more interested but haven't dived in yet. and hopefully the number of people making kits and original circuits scales up too!
I'm new to it its really cool.
@@YOVOZOL I plan to join that short list eventually :)
surely it's more than a 1000 people, but only a 1000 people can afford what LZX is producing
And we are all watching this video 😂🖤😎
Really great breakdown 😎🌊🌊🌊
yo! what a legend in the comments!
aye nice to see you here homie.
I was a electronic musician/guitarist that went on an journey to become a cameraman and now i am super interested in combining these two world together with analog visual arts and sound.
Superbly grateful for this video.
Samee
Didn’t really know the first thing about video synthesis when I woke up today. This is so informative! Thanks so much for putting this together. Great information makes for a great presentation. I just planned on saving to watch later and was hooked right away!
I like the word *artistic medium* instead of format
you brought me here, thanks
that's def what it needs to be called!
*edit: just to be sure don't miss Cat Full of Ghosts at catfullofghosts.xyz whom I forgot to mention in this video!
gear specific stuff might be better asked in the gear maker's DMs or in r/videobending, r/videosynthesis, scanlines.xyz, or your device's dedicated forum if it has one. I am busy and get a lot of messages so I will probably not answer.
Thank you so much for the info great video!
Great video! As video source raspi based probably you missed the wonderful r_e_c_u_r!
@@esnho yes! i keep hearing r_e_c_u_r again and again it seems like the granddaddy of all the raspberry pi processors
@@YOVOZOL I don't know if is the granddaddy but I own one and is wonderful, technically can be a processor but at its hearth is a video player, you can create playlist and play with them live, is controllable with a MIDI controller and can be expanded to support eurorack inputs (!!!), this expansion is called i_n_c_u_r
It can also load and play shaders that can be used to generate video or to process the playlist, it support webcam input and can create simple internal feedbacks.
Sometimes is hard to find online, try to search langolierz/r_e_c_u_r on google ;)
Awesome video! It's a lot of info crammed tightly together, so I think more in depth videos is a great idea! Also, a discord server would be fantastic!
As a beginner in this space I greatly appreciate this video. Thank you for your insight, but also for providing so many leads to further my search for knowledge.
Your video is incredible! thanks for sharing this information, i'm from brazil, i would love to buy this equipment and produce this beautiful art, but i don't know where to buy
thank you! (i think) most people are open to international shipping! I really hope somebody from brazil gets onto making some gear, there seems to be a lot of growing interest in it
achar br em lugar assim é raro
@@matheusab3166 mais um então!! vamo la!
I got into glitch art/video synthesis around the same time you started posting these educational kind of videos and it’s been so helpful. You’re doing great stuff man, I love your work. Keep it up!
Do you know of a free way to make glitch art?
$70-$100 for a box with a single 1K potentiometer and a couple of RCA plugs?? how are these people not ashamed of what they're doing
Big ups specially to Drew, dudes line up of glitch processors in insane. He also had top tier service. Bought a modded mixer from his line up, had some issues with it, and he totally resolved it with no issues and reimbursed my shipment back to him. Cannot understate his dedication to his products. Def agree with that he has the most unique devices and bends. His ave3 should be in electronic history books
absolutely. such dedication to the craft. would fascinating to talk to
Forgot - Cat Full Of Ghosts - CFOG ...Australia. Great vid though. I have a few things from BPMC's, 3trin, some LZX, and whatnot.
...praying every day for video equations 2 to drop...
@@sleeppattern I see he just did a kickstarter for his Xchange thing, which looks handy....I'm too broke for more video gear right now though. I have 2 versions of the equations and his T-Bar.
@@Jellotuna yeah I don’t have the HP to waste on utility like that (and I already have access to most of those solutions?) it’s not a bad idea and super accessible, just not for me
@@sleeppattern ya, whatever works for ya. I need more cases myself....I have a lot of gear, but need another big case this year...hopefully. I'm working on a few things...like some diy and paying off my motorcycle before I get another case, but coming along.
@@Jellotuna HELL, i thought 9U 126 was gonna be enough.. i need ANOTHER 9U.... >.
My house has become too small for all this gear. I got three lzx and televisions have taken over.
do the diy kits come with instructions , Ive never done computer engineering.
MAN YOU HAVE NO IDEA FOR HOW LONG I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS, i've been insanely interested in video art as a general form, but i always wondered how these glitchy effects were done, i only ever could manage anything similar by going through after effects and using like datamosh, and today i finally found what it's called and even better you telling me that there is a whole world of people selling gear for it
very well put together video, thanks!
very kool - thx for making this - - 💫📺✨
Softology Visions of Chaos (Windows/Android) and the like might be of interest, not really the same thing but close enough.
thanks, I'll check it out
in soviet communism this is still mainstream gear
lol
Man!! I thought I was the only one who wanted to do things like this! It's only when I looked into circuit bending audio that I found this video. This is so cool! I have been doing these funny effects on after effects... Where do I get started??
Thank you for putting together such a comprehensive video on this topic! This isn't only a great resource, it's a really cool snapshot in time.
"Not the first take". Hard relate. Also, this is awesome. I am furious that you are going to cost me so much money now.
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to get into glitch art / video synthesis. For the last 6 months. Everything either was for after effects (glitch art search) or hardware that's too expensive for someone just getting started. This was a great overview and thank you for cover multiple price ranges.
r_e_c_u_r an open diy video sampler based is raspberry pi, i think. you should chek it out, i think it goes with the theme of the video
yep that's one i unfortunately missed but it fortunately seems to be one of the easier ones to learn about, once you get into raspberry pi video stuff
such a good video, thanks a lot for all this !
Awesome Awesome video , great job.
Dude u r a beast thank u for this 👑👑👑
wow amazing! great job
Nice work here. Keep it up :)
Damn, comrade! This was solid information and I appreciate your drive to archive this... As i was writing this comment i absolutely lost it at "I'm just saying....*blink...blink...*" love how you covered a large variety of topics and kept everything flowing. Can't wait for the next deep dive.
... i'm just saying... haha thank you :)
You've done a great service here
Thanks Yovozol for the great and in depth info! I only discovered this art medium recently on a visit to a record store in Phoenix. I have been obsessed ever since and want to incorporate it into my voiceover studio i am planning to build. I have much to learn so videos like this help a lot!! Thank you!!
Thanks! Can’t wait to get into it!
This was fantastic thank you for making this.
where can i find the video on how to make the most basic video glitch circuit ? u are talking about at 14:00
it's in my TBC video but literally the circuit is pictured you just need alligator clips and the 1k ohm pot. if you're not familiar with the basics of electronics there are many videos about it :)
Excellent video! I've built a Gieskes 3TrinsRGB1 from a kit years ago.
LF vga converter feedback loop so good - looking forward to receiving fb100 with the LFO
gonna be exciting !
@@YOVOZOL yeah very keen - here's what my homemade one looks like ua-cam.com/video/I36-Sw-uExs/v-deo.html great project
If I want to make visuals like Zombtendo , what cheap device is better in your opinion ?
i have no idea tbh, just get any analog circuit that works. zombtendo puts a lot of work into their art probably uses a combo of gear and software
@@YOVOZOL I'm a subscriber now, have you any video guide for beginner who wants yo start? Thank you.
This video is amazing, you have a great knowledge of the history and gear. After watching I'm hooked and buying my own gear to use in future uploads. You should check out gator.biz on Instagram. He makes this type of hardware too.
hell yeah i did actually talk to gator before making the video. they don't have website documentation of their builds so that's why i had to cut :(
and also holy shit a witch legend in the comments!!
Make a discord dude! Great video! 👍
ha i'll set one up soon, amazed that u, who i listened to years ago, are watching my videos now!!
OH THANK YOU FOR THE GERMAN RECOMENDATION I live in Germany so I was worried about converting the American ones to fit standards here in Europe lol
wow, thank you! I was hanging on to each word and will be revisiting this video. I'm interested to work with generative/glitch/synthesis video along with my music to create immersive experiences in live performance. What a wonderful world to explore, thanks again for breaking it down like this!
This video is everything I've been searching for! but you already know that.. :)Thank you so much for your time and effort. Big ups!
still makes me smile reading comments like these 🙂
I got heavy into video glitch art, projections and analog video circuits back in 2015/2016, but I ended up selling all my gear in 2018. Kinda wish I hadn't.
I would probably add OpenFrameworks or even Cinder for people would actually can code their own stuff. Or even Processing maybe ?
a whole new wooorlld
fucking amazing vid. so inspired. shoutout from brazil
Just now watched this. I have some old stuff wanting to preserve/restore/convert...thank you!!!
Thanks! Very informative and cool. I just ordered the Eyesy and I can't wait. I have an Oscillatoscope2b from Gijs Gieskes that's fun, also check out @psychiceyeclix he's got a lot of crazy stuff too. I just happened upon your channel so I'll have to take a look.
Thanks, Jonny
Thanks a lot !!!
I always love videos with "but soldering this is hard", since for me it's like, "No it's not. I do surface mount soldering. That's easy."
Amazing , thx for this video it's so complete🌈📟👾Great work!
so happy your channel is still active
me too
Eyelusion Visuals this video was amazing grrrrrreat job. you nailed it.
So dope! The industry is only going up from here and I’m glad it’s showing on yt, little closer to believing I didn’t blow my savings on a BA for nothing so you’ve earned a sub 👍
Excellent video! Entertaining, informative and teeming with great resources.
Extremely informative. Thank you for this video.
Mannnnnn this video is on point!! Good job! I saw the critter & guitari eyesy which i will probably get. But I was wondering if there was more gear like it. This video was perfect for me!
GREAT video, thank you! Instant sub.
Epic video! Thank you for all that info. 🤘😎🤘
The admin for scanlines.xyz is a solid dude, and IIRC is the madman behind the R_E_C_U_R. There was so much new info here, good content
Dave Mustaine Jr. is into video glitch!!! Rock on 🤘
This guy escaped a regular show episode and now lives in our realm
Cat full of ghosts man, and any discussion of vector graphics would be nice.
THANK YOU
Thank you for your videos! Very illuminating and useful
I really want to get into this.. Would you mind me asking you a few technical questions?
You're catching a lot of buzz right now- check your emails
Thanks for this one
I think you opened a new door for me

Hey YOVOZOL! Thanks for mentioning us!
Great vid, informative. Looking forward to this path.
I'm an old school career TV techy come computer geek and Videot Savante who dove into the video art world in the late 80's and 90's, largely in conjunction with the digital art and demo scene enabled by the Amiga computer. Led me to teach electronic art and animation in the Amiga and video labs at Atlanta College of Art for several years. For a couple of those years, we did bi-weekly 4 hour video art broadcasts with live music tracking out of the cable local access studios using multiple Amigas that I (re)wired into the control room video switcher and patch matrix. SO KEWL to see this art form is seeing a renaissance! Thanks for bringing it up to radar level!
Great video man thanks for the breakdown.
Subbed!!
Awesome intro to the subject! Thanks so much for making my life easier
thank you!! I'm new to this world and you opened my eyes... I fell in the rubbish hole
The closest thing to video art I've done is transfer digital video to VHS tape, then play that cassette a fuckton and rub my greasy fingers on the tape itself. Sometimes when the tape is too pristine, I transfer the video to some shitty, old VHS tape I found at the local thrift store.
Great stuff man Been checking ur shit on ig for awhile this was super informative
You are amazing, you just saved me so much time. Thanks so much!
yea these dudes were way ahead thinking of bringing back this stuff, like the vaporwave era would have fit perfectly with this tech
I want one lol
I want LZX Chromag because lasers.
I’ve wanted good analog video synthesis for so long honestly, I’ve never been able to even find much, let alone afford it
We salute you Michael thank you for your service 🫡
thank you very much ! awesome vid and info, I enjoyed a lot.
And I thought eurorack was pricey 😞
Excellent summary. Thank you.
Fantastic explanation! I will start do this as soon as I get a circuit bender! Thanks for inspiring me! Greeting from Poland!
Oh, wow! I accidentally stumbled over your video while watching modular synthesis videos. This is so interesting and a whole new world is opening up in front of my eyes. Great stuff! Thank you for the overview.
sweet! seems like this video is filling a void
Hey I am just starting my video art legacy at the intersection of graphic design and music video production. I love all the artists you have mentioned. Im definitely going to showcase this video and those designers on my instagram account... maybe try to put together a collaboration!
I just got an edirol V-4 parts of the effects dont work (left hand side) and if anyone knows anyone or wants to repair it please let me know!
Thanks 🙏🏻 for informations, bro
interest in Hypno brought me here. Thanks for all of this great info!
So monotone lmao I love this vid, very helpful thnx.
Awesome video man, thank you! I'm just starting to look into this stuff and this was a great kickoff
