    So much negativity in the comments haha.
    To be fair to David, he is clear the price is ludicrous BUT that doesn’t mean it’s not an incredible bike! You can’t justify the price, but if you have the money and want an incredible bike then go it it. Alternatively if you don’t think it’s worth it have a look at a different brand or bike. I can’t afford a Ferrari but love watching videos about them.
    I do own the SL8 Pro. It’s by far the best bike I have ever ridden, the comfort is incredible for a proper race bike. Just a stunning machine. Loads of great details and lots of thought in to the design. Remember folks, David is just reviewing a bike, you don’t have to buy it. Just enjoy the content 😊

      I agree with you but the thing is that you should provide information that is actually helpful for your audience and help them to make the best decision possible. I can totally understand the people who don't want to hear about bikes that they never will buy. The second problem i see with the situation is that these bikes are getting way to much attention from different UA-camrs. That's exactly what the brands wants.

      It's not faster or more aero than the SL7 though.

    One thing I do not understand is reviewers like your self all said 5 years ago said lightness made a difference. Then disks came about they all said the weight does not matter as much aero matters more. Now disk brake bikes are getting light again suddenly bikes being light weight makes a difference again ?
    I do not understand is how they say how it counts as aero as the venge. The frame has hardly any of the classic aero features such as deeper forks, deeper seat tube thicker bottom tube. Apart from a slightly deeper head tube and some bars that's it?

    • @fizzybubbelech
      @fizzybubbelech 11 місяців тому +3

      My guess is that there is a difference between how it looks and how it actually performs (as with many things in life).
      To me I still can't understand whether I like this or is my SL7 still the prettiest racebike out there...

    David, I totally agree with your comments, the bike is superb. I have been riding for decades and always on the old well trusted mechanical systems (nothing wrong with them), but this is on another level. I decided to ride on 28mm tubeless tyres with the 3D printed saddle and man, another step up in comfort. Greetings from Gibraltar, all the best.

    Thank you for this David. I’ve been waiting for this video for weeks and I’m so glad the SL8 reviewed as well as it has. I genuinely hoped it lived up to the hype, and it seems it does. Awesome! I, like many, can’t afford the £12k price tag, and probably not the £8k pro model either, but I want to see is how other manufacturers respond to this new benchmark. I’m hoping the recently leaked TCR images mean the likes of Giant are now upping their game, and possibly rival this with something a little more affordable. Let’s see!!!

    I have a SWORKS SL4 and an SL7. They're awesome.
    SL4 feels lighter and solid even after all these years. I took it to ride Tour de Boerne a while ago, and it never felt more alive out in the Texas Hillcountry. I fell in love with it all over again.
    SL7 is a bit different but still does the same. It's just maybe a tad scarier going downhill because it will hit the descent a bit quicker than you will expect. It's odd, but it'd be hard to let these go if I ever wanted a new bike.

Let's face it though- all bikes in this range are expensive- you're not going to find a $5,000 bike these days to compare with some of these bikes you mention in your review. It sucks but the days of an inexpensive racing bike are done.

    I've looked at the prices Specialized list the Tarmac SL8 Pro and SWorks models for in Australia (my local market), UK, USA and Europe (Germany). The UK get shafted on pricing. The SL8 Pro model is over £2000 more expensive in the UK compared to Australia. Having said that, there isn't any stock of this model in Australia, so availability is an issue.

  • @Millicente
    @Millicente 11 місяців тому

    How does the bottom bracket stiffness and comfort compare to a full aero bike like the Aeroad? At 5 watts faster the Canyon is still the better buy imo since the top range CFR isn't much heavier than the equivalent SL8 but is much cheaper. The only thing that would make me prefer the SL8 is the often praised BB stiffness while also being comfortable.

    Specialized put a lot of money in to R&D, pro teams, quality finishing, it all costs money and if the product was a bag of nails, then fair enough it would be a rip. But Specialized does deliver as good a quality end product as anyone else, even others at these sky-high prices. An SL8 Expert will give most people what they need for half the price, but us Specialized “fans” love S-Works on the down tube!

      No, that weight is without pedals, bottle cages etc - it makes more sense to weigh without pedals you then add the weight of your pedals. Otherwise, do I weigh cheap or expensive pedals, Shimano, look, speedplay, time?? That's so much variance in pedal weight it would skew the ready to ride weight

      I am amazed at how many people are extremely focused on a tiny portion of the bike (the front "cone") and don't see the bike as a whole. If one is not focusing on that and just looking at the side profile, it likes like most other aero all-around bikes. The looks are fine. And the bike is fantastic.

      @@Matt-fb5xe I don't see aesthetic cohesion, I see a cut and shut of three bikes put together, which is essentially what it is. I don't mind this as such if the performance overrides it, which on all accounts it does... but when one compares the finish to other options with perhaps intricate visible carbon work, or natty detailed high finish paintjobs then I'd feel a bit shortchanged here. Take away the logos and theres not much here visually to differentiate the 12k bike to a 4k bike. Some of the other paint options may well resolve this, for 12k I want atleast sparkles, epic colour fade at a minimum.

      @@Lenser On the combined metrics of stiffness/ lightness/ comfort/ aero, this one has more of all of that - whereas most contenders maybe match 2 or 3 of those areas but not all at once. Many modern bike quality has drop drastically. What they compensate back to the ride that the bike industry offered you a 12speed groupset that have 32-34 cassette. Weight didn’t matter back in 2019 , but due to a shift in the earth’s natural orbit in 2023, weight is now once again a significant factor! Reviewers can once again ‘feel’ that difference in their reviews. Scientists are unsure when or if the earth will shift back into its previous orbit, where ‘aero trumps weight’.

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  11 місяців тому +2

      The thing with this SL8, it shows that all aero bikes have reached largely the same point in aerodynamic performance, so while there's not a lot of aero on the table without UCI changes, attention can turn back to weight and bringing that down after disc brakes, electronics, deep section wheels etc pushed weight up over the last 10 years. As with most things in life we go through phases and trends and some things become the bigger focus whilst other aspects fade into the background, but never disappear. It's all part of the incremental development. But anyway here's a bike that people have been asking for, it's fast and not heavy yet some people aren't happy haha!

    I ride an Enve Melee as I replaced a damaged Canyon Ultimate earlier in 2023 and the SL8 wasn't revealed at that time. It makes me wonder, though. If Enve are "carbon experts", what must Specialized be to make an even lighter, more aero bike than the Melee? While the Melee is the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden and less expensive than the Specialized, it's heavier. Specialized engineers must design and have access to lighter and stronger carbon fiber than even their larger competitors like Giant and Cannondale.

      @@davidarthur so it seems that these figures are for the dummy legs ONLY. They calculate that a torso will require an extra 50% (to the cda or power, I don’t remember). I think that the comparisons between bikes are ok but the raw data is very misleading - for example pushing 200w on my ‘non-aero’ bike gets me to just above 30kph in good conditions so being led to believe that an SL9 will magically take me to 45kph is disingenuous.
