I don't find Jerry to be arrogant at all. I think he's very honest in the way he answers the questions. He doesn't sugar coat his observations and he does not feign humility. Many people mistake this for arrogance. He is simply answering questions honestly.
What I find terribly "fascinating" is so many users quickly stab at Jerry but they waste their time watching these videos. If you dislike Jerry Lewis so much why are you here? I've looked at this & never have I seen the arrogance or attitude that some claim they see. Jerry is not the reason why his split from Dean Martin occured. Dean had faults too. As they were destined to join together, they were to separate. Jerry is an intellectual and a genius. His legend will never be washed away ♥
I have grown tired of your idiocy and your useless hatred of a man as intelligent and talented as Jerry Lewis. The mediocre hate those they cannot reach. Dean has always loved Jerry as Jerry has always loved Dean. They had just developed a different way of working.
Charles Martel Well yes, that's true, but a lack of formal education doesn't necessarily mean a lack of intelligence. Whatever else one may think of him Jerry was obviously not a stupid man. On the contrary, he was said to have had a very high I.Q.
The European film community, as true cineastes, approached Lewis ‘films with a completely different interpretive and intellectual claim. They analyzed his films very carefully, looked behind the obviously funny and were delighted with the wonderful anarchy and the subversive comedy. Jean Luc Godard has named Lewis the only progressive American filmmaker.
Jerry is so right about European audiences. Even in 2013. Any entertainment that comes from North America is considered very special. The British/German people love western movies and their stars and country music. Jerry is multi talented . Not only as an entertainer but he invented many movie making equipment used to this day.
How true Tarn Sand. I'm in the AV business and I remember hanging out with one of the older cats and he told me that Jerry Lewis had invented the "Preview monitor". and sure enough I googled it and it was Jerry Lewis ideed who had come up with the idea. To think that this piece of equipment, which we still use today came from this genius. He sure was way ahead of the curve..
Jerry was right when he talked about how we Europeans weren't that oversaturated with nonstop distraction like 18 hour TV program like in the US. Back then there were basically just 2 programs in west Germany and basically 2 programs in east Germany as well. When when a new movie came out, especially from such comedic geniuses like Jerry Lewis or Louis de Funès, people were sucking it up with so much appreciation and delight, it pretty much always united whole families and left such a strong impression and created multiple generations of fans. The part about "expanding some show bits" for the shows in Europe really makes me smile cuz i love how he really gave the audience even more than for people home in the USA were patient enough to let him do. This man was a HUGE deal since my earliest Childhood because he reminded me a lot of my uncle and vice versa and both were a positive anchor in my childhood years. And of course he too loved Jerry Lewis.
This man enlightened my sunday afternoons for years of my childhood in France, we would watch one of his movies at 2pm and, on monday morning, we would replay the scenes in the school yard. He was our heroe! Thank you for all this great moments Mr Lewis, when life at home was so dark... 🙏🙏🙏
There you go again - more crap. The man is 86! He was successful for long enough. Comedy is the hardest craft in entertainment. You're consistently funny though!
I don't care about his personal life. His character or something like that. The thing is: he was super funny in his movies and I really think he was a sexy man speaking in interviews. 😎
Jerry looked up to Dean Martin how a younger brother looks up to his older brother. I think it hurt Jerry very much that Dean wanted to walk away from "the act"; but no way in hell would Jerry ever admit to it.
Jerry, a brilliant comedian but very egotistical. This cannot be denied but I will choose to remember him at the 8:40 mark exactly. Boyish, self depricating, boyish and not guarded for a few moments. Brilliance in an area does not give one the right to the center of the universe. I don't think the French care if you are arrogant when you are an artist. He is a very giving man too and a complex individual. God Bless Jerry and thanks for the laughs, kid.
Here's a secret, I've worked in the arts and many other professions and a lot of people have an inflated ego. We all struggle with our egos at times. Jerry Lewis was honest about who he was and that's certainly more enjoyable and tolerable than all these passive aggressive know-it-alls who feign civility and humbleness but secretly think they are god's gift to humanity and need a cathedral to park their egos.
I knew the guy that played "Monk" alongside jerry in Delicate Delinquent. He said jerry used to give him his monogrammed sport coats because he hadn't any proper dress clothes to wear. They had jerrys name tag sewed into them. Said jerry helped watch out for him in his early days in Hollywood.
Great advice about how being negative makes you old and tired and sick. If you can live by just that advice everyday, you will be a lot happier and a lot more productive.
☺WAIT! did Jerry call Dean 'a burning house full of my kids screaming at me Daddy come save me ?' huh? what does that even mean? did Jerry think Dean was a helpless infant without him? seems like a massive insult
How the hell someone cannot differentiate between explaining the futility of a pre planned scenario of "What would you do" as opposed to what Jerry said he would say to Dean is totally beyond me. Time to re-watch it and actually pay attention to what Jerry says....here's a little help... "I would do the first joke I could think of that would recall something that would make him laugh" He then goes on to say "That's like asking a man who's house is on fire......"
B Hayes Hey Hayes, no need to get trollish, i just asked a ?, and i did watch it again, as per ur suggestion, i even had 3 other ppl watch it, and we ALL AGREE it was meant to be a thinly veiled slur. sorry, i guess we need to just agree to disagree 😉 please dont be angry, sometimes ppl hear the same thing but they interpret it differently, and thats what Jerry was aiming for, at least thats what we 3 think. ☺ Jerry was KNOWN for his hidden insults, everybody thinks of him as a goofball, but he has a deathly sharp tongue. Thats how we remember him. Best Wishes Hun 😘
Me encanta Jerry, es increible que un tipo tan serio que incluso parece ser algo pesado, pueda hacer reir a tanta gente y se transforme en el ser mas dulce cuando actua....Gran actor y gran comediante
Agreed. And I am not taking anything away from Jerry. But I have seen him interviewed several times and I agree with your first point. Jerry can seem condescending and something of a boor at times. And I see how that could grate on people.
a comic genius in a primitive time in a recordable period. there's nothing wrong or right .. its just is what it is or was. imagine if there never was a jerry lewis... could we? it'd be like the wright bros not being recognized for flight. how strange would that be.
He did a film in the mid 1990’s called a Funny Bones. Excellent movie but Lewis didn’t act much, he was just his same old brutal self, the one you see here. You get the feeling that being a fall guy made his post Martin Lewis career all about being a hard man.
I will always recognize Lewis for being a talent, but you get the feeling he was never really comfortable being known for just a part of his act. Its partly his fault, because he made a zillion dollars. His ego is through the roof and you can see how it rubs people the wrong way.
All artists are not egomaniacs. No group of people are ever always something. And to Mr. Hendrix , look through the purple haze and see that some entertainers are actually as humble as they seem. A gist such as giving laughter is just that and there was a reason Dean and inside referred to Jerry as "The Animal"...no secret anymore. Let's everyone just chill and listen to the sound of one hand clapping for our own miniscule opinions, including my own..can I get an Amen!?!
They tormented each other (good naturedly) all the time. Dean got a young Jerry very high on a reefer and then they had to go on stage! Come on, they were two young guys together - they had fun, they were naughty! They had success - it happens!!
People who are good at what they do, dedicated to what they do and always expect perfection are often seen as big-headed or egomaniacs. Jerry knows what people call him but he doesn't care - he knows he's good. So what? He's not hurting anybody in the process. He's just asking for competence.
I fail to understand why being articulate is considered arrogant. Classy man.
Jealousy and feelings of inadequacy make fools dislike him. He was terrific, a superb performer and a real polymath. We shan't see his sort again.

So talented and stylish loved Jerry since i was a kid.
now I can see how Dean might have gotten a little tired of this attitude...

@@jerrylewisthekid5479 Hey dude. I love Jerry Lewis. I think the guy was funny as hell. He will always be one of our national treasures.
Martin and Lewis was a great partnership in a different world and Jerry was so funny the faces he created and that voice.!
People were drawn to Lewis because he had a complex personality - a mixture of a clown and a hatchet man. A nice guy with a dark side.
.. Or a bad guy with a light cover?
A comedy genius, a intelligent and cool guy
The guys spends his career acting like a clown and then spends the rest of his life pissed off that people don't take him seriously....
Jerry a comic genius and innovator ahead of his time. NT
Amen to that. Supreme talent.
Chucklehead
a very intelligent man
Charles Martel Well yes, that's true, but a lack of formal education doesn't necessarily mean a lack of intelligence. Whatever else one may think of him Jerry was obviously not a stupid man. On the contrary, he was said to have had a very high I.Q.
I've been watching a lot of his interviews, and his intelligence really impresses.
@Kevin K I'm interested in the real Lewis.. do you have links that might point me in the right direction?
He invented instant replay.
You're right, he did
The European film community, as true cineastes, approached Lewis ‘films with a completely different interpretive and intellectual claim. Lewis is a truly innovative.
He was a handsome chap!
It had to be great. Almost always being te smartest person in the room. And, being the only one aware of it.

Smart, handsome & funny 👌
Very intelligent and damn good looking!
Yes on both counts!
I certinly agree he was avery educated man
Extremely bright but very narcissistic. I doubt this man has ever said he doesn’t know something.
It's the curse of the very bright. They just don't get they can't transfer their greatness to every field. Read Thomas Sowell.
Wow. Jerry was talking about Americans being over stuffed with media back then. Imagine were we are at today!
This man enlightened my sunday afternoons for years of my childhood in France, we would watch one of his movies at 2pm and, on monday morning, we would replay the scenes in the school yard. He was our heroe! Thank you for all this great moments Mr Lewis, when life at home was so dark... 🙏🙏🙏
This guy is a great interviewer.
Do you all get the Martin - Cyd Charisse connection? That is Tony Martin, the singer, of course.

To Raul Luevano......its not disgusting language when he calls him Dick....His name actually is Dick :)

Read Dean and me A love story. Nothing but praise for Dean from start to finish.
Dick Cavett drew out the best in Jerry

Fabulous performance
I love him💖
He has a merciless mind.
Said it best when he mentioned about Americans whose nerve ends have been homed down.
Funny thing is, that comment of Jerry still applies today.
He did a film in the mid 1990’s called a Funny Bones. Excellent movie but Lewis didn’t act much, he was just his same old brutal self, the one you see here. You get the feeling that being a fall guy made his post Martin Lewis career all about being a hard man.

He appealed to the low-brow chuckleheads. Mugging is sophisticated wit to them.
But I do think Jerry Lewis is genuinely funny - - especially in movies that came after the split. I do laugh out loud.
Look at france now..
?????????????
Bad titles from this channel on jerry. Good clip
he should have done at least one reunion film with Dean Martin in 1970s or 1980s even. give the people what they want
Imagine listening to a conversation between William F. Buckley and Jerry Lewis.....who's more smug?
but there;s a something I don't like?????
great great wisdom from Mr Lewis here in the first minute and 4 seconds
I'd rather not imagine where we are nowadays... ;-)
Sort of like Clark Griswold in the VACATION films, of course!!
He was an reel artist
@9162vb48 who wouldn't???
Awful.....Watch his interview on Letterman where he brags about dropping uppers and downers into Dean Martin's drink. Funny, huh?
They tormented each other (good naturedly) all the time. Dean got a young Jerry very high on a reefer and then they had to go on stage! Come on, they were two young guys together - they had fun, they were naughty! They had success - it happens!!
Ha, love the clip from the Errand Boy.
Agreed.
Never could stand him...so full of himself and he wasn't really all that important.
He was innovative in filmmaking
why is it that almost all, if not all the people who did not like Jerry Lewis are men, we know why don,t we jealous
It's called jealousy!
Class act
He was a total jerk to many people
Steve G I recently watched Lewis interview Mohammad Ali. It was depressing to watch. Lewis talked down to him.
I love the hip Jerry Lewis.
His name is Buddy Love.
You are right. I stand corrected.
4:10 - Actors are petulant schizophrenics - Cavett looked lost after that and by 6:40, you'd forget he was a comedian.
People who are good at what they do, dedicated to what they do and always expect perfection are often seen as big-headed or egomaniacs. Jerry knows what people call him but he doesn't care - he knows he's good. So what? He's not hurting anybody in the process. He's just asking for competence.
about 1:22, Jerry seems to be making fun of Dick Cavett by imitating a feminine voice.
? ...I knew before I did. ...and that was for a stranger. Just another citizen.
Geez, he comes off as a very snooty person. Fame got to his head.
