In reception on all bands the DR-920c is like the little brother R-9012. The circuits seem to be the same in both radios. I prefer the DR-920c because it has digital readout and therefore its easy to tune exactly on a frequency fastly. The alignment of the R-9012 is not very precise which is normal for a radio with a dial. I love to do fast bandscans with the DR-920c, also it has (like the R-9012) some DX-capabilities on SW and AM which are better than some of the much more expensive radios. The DR-920c is basic and you get what you hear. The sound is quite nice for such a small radio but it has no DSP, no Tone-Control or Bandfilters, no S-Meter, no Tuning eye. The nulling-abillity on AM and SW is perfectly! Its all simple and easy with all advantages and disadvantages of those analoge superhet radios. The DR-920c is a little powerhouse for all who like to start with AM or SW or want a small good radio for holidays or outdoor activities, also old radioheads will love it. I give the Tecsun R-9012 (7.5 out of 10) and its brother with more features Tecsun DR-920c (8.5 out of 10). Two good radios which are worth the money, but in my opinion, the Tecsun DR-920c is the better choice.

4 years after having this little powerhouse, it's still my go-to when I take my evening walks out into the country side in rural Illinois and it picks up soooooo much on SW. One of the greatest radios for the price for sure. This one has kept me in the hobby as I don't have any fancy antenna's for the more expensive radios.
SW Radios with LCD display (so-called "digital tuning") with a real tuning wheel (not only buttons) and an analog circuitry (no DSP) aren't common and they're quite nice to use for browsing the SW bands. So, thanks to your review, although the very least thing I need now is yet another radio in my collection, I have ordered it 😁
It took me a good while to warm up to how this radio tunes. I could not get it to land on that exact number for any given frequency. My OCD! As you stated, Todderbert, no need to land exactly on the zero. In fact, we often look for radios that are not dsp tuned or radios that have 1kHz tuning to hunt dx. This radio is truly a little gem. Get a Terk or Tecsun loop and have a ball on AM, and clip a wire to the ariel for FM and shortwave action! This type of analog tuned radio won't be around forever.
Thank you, todderbert, for your great videos! I always look forward to you posting something new! I purchased the DR-920C and I wanted describe my experience with it. I found that I could not receive my favorite station at 92.3 MHz because the station at 91.7 MHz was overpowering it. I exercised my return option with Amazon because I thought it had defective tuning. I ordered a new one from Amazon and it has the same problem. I further found that the 91.7 MHz signal overpowered all FM stations up to 94.85 MHz. I researched this further. The station at 91.7 MHz is broadcasting at 20,000 watts and its antenna is only about two miles away from my home. My favorite station at 92.3 MHz turns out to be a translator for an AM station at 1620 kHz broadcasting at 250 watts with an antenna about 20 miles away. This problem does not occur for my DSP radios (even though the 92.3 MHz signal is kind of scratchy). I also noticed that I can feel occasional clicks when turning the tuning dial for this new radio (this did not occur in the first radio). I guess my question is whether or not this new radio is also defective. I do not want to send a second one back to Amazon when there is really nothing wrong with it. Tomorrow, I plan to drive further away from the 91.7 MHz antenna, but keep about the 20 mile distance from the 92.3 MHz antenna, and test the radio's behavior. I got out my 40-year-old Zenith Continental and found that 92.3 MHz could not be tuned in because of being overpowered by 91.7 MHz. This was not the case when I used it a few months ago when 92.3 could be tuned in. Would it be unusual for the station at 91.7 MHz to have increased its power?? All comments are welcome!
Not sure on the FM question, but this radio is geared more towards MW and SW. The clicks in the tuning wheel could be an issue. I would exchange it on that alone, if it seems bothersome.
The main two things about mine are no a.c. adaptor and on SW you tune up then down on the next and up on the next lol. Kinda frustrating when your slowly going thru looking for what's on
I really appreciate and enjoy your reviews thank you ended up purchasing this radio tonight thanks to your revisited review. I was just wondering how come you have the wire cord and not the MLA-30+ Loop Antenna, 100kHz-30MHz Active Receiving Antenna, Rainproof Loop Antenna for HA SDR Short Medium Wave Radio, with 10m Feeder,Built-in Low Noise Amplifier, for Rooftop? Keep up the great reviews!!!

@@todderbert that is great! When I was around 8 yrs old, my favorite toy was a transistor am radio. At that time I lived 20 east of Columbus Ohio. I believe it was my favorite toy because of I had so much to listen to. Then our family moved to Indiana. Two stations, that's it. Well anyway thank you for your reviews.
@@todderbert So, let's say at night you set the sleep timer and while listening to the broadcast at a low volume you fell asleep, in the morning the wake up alarm (radio) volume would not be louder than the level you were listening to when you fell a sleep. Do you know of any pocket radio that has either dedicated buzzer or increasing wake up volume (ideally runs with 2xAA)? You know what's ironic, most travel alarm clocks don't have low battery indicators.
This radio is not a DSP. It may have an IC but it will be an analog radio on a chip. The display is a digital frequency counter. The insides resemble the all analog R9012.
Just use rechargeable batteries. If there`s a power outage switch to alkalines. You can buy an Energizer charger that comes with 4 AA batteries for about 10 bucks. Many of the Tecsuns only use 3 AA batteries though and that charger only charges 2 or 4 batteries at a time. Chargers that can do singles batteries so you can charge 3 cost more I think. But if you buy Tecsun`s overpriced cheapo AC adapter you can charge batteries in the radio, which isn`t a proper charger, and will likely ruin them. And you can listen to the radio using the AC adapter because it causes horrible static. I will avoid Tecsun products in the future. I just happened to get a defective one.
Very deep and good review. Thank you. I have a question. If you remember tecsun pl-118 on FM, Could you tell me which one is better: this oner or pl-118. I am just asking for FM I have r-9012. It has good on sw but i think it is very bad on FM. If 920 is like 9012 i wont buy it. If 920 is better than pl-118 i will order 920. If you answer me i would appreciate. Thank you very much for your all reviews. Watching your videos isreally fun for me. Have a nice day

can this radio listen to uvb-76 (4625 kHz) ? im new to sw radio
I'm impressed how many stations you get on daytime am radio in Chicago. Nice radio 👍
I am fortunate to live near two cities. Chicago and Milwaukee. With the occasional Madison stations coming through.

What is the difference between the 920 and the 920C ? Many thanks. Great video too.
920C doesn't have battery indicator, no always on backlight, no buzzer alarm, no FM stereo, no 24 hour clock.
What if you set the radio volume on low does the alarm work? Can you set the alarm for buzzer only?
Radio only, set the volume to your desired level.

How would you place this up against the DR-910?
Better Audio, and more shortwave coverage.
Which other radios have a digital dial and are an analog radio.
not many, there is a Tecsun DR-910
@@todderbert isn’t the Kaito KA-208 analog? It’s still available on Amazon.
