So I found the original in 2012 while doing research into pirate shanties for a summer camp theater class I was teaching. (We learned scenes from "How I Became a Pirate", and made our own pirate characters.) I learned the words and taught the kids, and during lunch hour a VERY LARGE GROUP of 8 year old children sang it together while we waited for food. I'm so glad the Longest Johns have kept making music since!!
camraman james If you mean Josh, it sounds like (from the livestream chat; I don’t know myself) he’s no longer part of the group but still alive and well! Hope this helps. 🙂
You guys are my absolute favorite band. Between Wind and Water pushed me through some really tough times (of which i have gotten through). From there on out i’ve been memorizing your songs left and right. Cures what ails ya is absolutely brilliant and now that you are posting these music videos, i can’t help myself but watching all of the time. thank you for all the memories. singing your songs with friends and listening all of the time has truly been wonderful. keep up the great work.
The Longest Johns Me, too TLJs! You’ve seriously helped give me songs and sillines to help express and mitigate awfulness through some painful adventures, just by being you!🙂 @Mr. Peru, I’m really glad you’ve gotten through your really tough times. All the best to ya! 😁
same man i feel you this got me trough some rough times to and i'm greatfull for these men that they still make music and everytime i hear them i find some happynes in my self and i am ready to take on the day again @The Longest Johns thankyou so much for your music and god bless you
You guys help me get through tough work at work. May the seas be nice to you and may the winds fill your sails. I find myself singing your shanties. God speed and fair weather.
They echoed Haul Away Joe in the Kitchen. Im glad to see the references to it in both the items on the table and the calls of 'You scoundrel!' at the end. First video I ever saw that got me hooked.
when I was 17, I ended up out on the streets, no family or friends to help, it was around that time that I discovered you guys, from the sea of thieves video, and I found that original haul away joe video. eventually I got a terrible job in a fast food restaurant working the fryer, I was miserable it was hot and I was on my feet for 10 hours a day with only a single 30 minute break. however one time I was just humming this song to myself and could practically feel my ancestors work ethic empowering me, so for a year and a half I worked hard to build enough capital to get a home and start attending college, and every day I would quietly sing this song to myself to get me through the day (I mixed in some of Santiana as well because I have a deeper voice and thought it mixed harmonized well in my head), everyone has one of those stories about how a band or something like that helped them through a seriously tough time in their life, I just thought Id tell you that yall where mine
So cute, how young you all looked. So very pleased that you are still together making a great sound on the harmonies. You all have great voices, but together it elevates to a great sound. Love it. See you at a festival in 2021.
I dont really have a touching story. All I'm gonna say is sea shanties make me remember things I've never experienced. Sometimes, I'll close my eyes and imagine the salty spray of the ocean in my face as I listen to sea shanties. It's amazing. I love you guys, and I wish my boyfriend loved sea shanties as much as I did, haha.
I converted my wife to enjoying you guys by simply blasting it while I game. Now I catch her singing snippets of your songs as she just walking around the apartment.
I first heard this song in the movie "The Finest Hours" and fell in love with it. I searched for it on youtube and your video was not only the first I watched, but it's remained my favorite version. Congratulations on all these years, these songs, and these people who love listening and (if they're like me) singing along. There's nothing like a hearty sing to lift a mood. And I can use all the lifting I can get these days!
I'd just finished watching Their Finest Hours, a movie about a real, dangerous Coast Guard rescue mission in the 1950s where several characters sing this song as they approach the immense breakers on their way out of the harbour, and opened up UA-cam to find this in my suggested videos. I'd never been interested in folk songs, and I caught this absolute banger from you guys sitting around the table and I've been following ever since. Absolute legends, great work
Thank you lads for taking us along on your journey, for keeping the tradition of the shanties and the old Maritime alive and most of all for bringing some seafaring to those of us who can’t get to the saltwater as much as we would like. Fair winds and following seas gentlemen.
I can't believe it's been 8 years! I was only 13 when I found you guys and started annoying my parents with sea shanties. Now I'm 21 and still being a nuisance on the river!
I want to start a shanty band with my friends
We’ll call it
The Shortest Johns
That reminds me of something for some reason... Probably nothing
Go for it man 😂😂
@@thelongestjohns Clara Josh & friends video that Jo filmed of them singing Drunken Sailor. I'm pretty sure they called themselves The Shortest Johns.

Do you have beards? Do you own boats? Do you . . .
I tend to use these songs while.doing any repetitive manual labor, such as.moving gravel or paddling a kayak.
I find them surprisingly useful when doing my pre-calc homework. Amazing songs these are.
Exactly the same here!.
Fair enough. That _is_ the intended purpose o' 'em, afterall.
Driving, or when working at the theater filling ice, popping corn, etc, for me.
That's what they were written for

This is the first live Longest Johns performance I have been to!
Live-ish... more streams soon though!
I love that the line "we'll haul away together" is in unison. Whether that's on purpose or an accident it's beautiful.
I can only see 4 people where are the other dozen during the chorus?
Below deck or up the masts. We keep them busy
@@thelongestjohns what happend to the other guy? i can't remember his name sorry.

It does sound like there are more! The audio space seems very full. Strong lungs, (& heart) these! 🙂

It's all the TLJ songs, but you only sing the first verse xD :P
I can't be here as it premieres. :( someone say hi to the lads for me
i will
Hi received and appreciated!
‘Well now can’t you see the storm clouds are gathering’ *pans to sunny skies*
panning to a sunny sky is not something you can typically do in England but TLJ managed it 😂
@@SamGamll Only in England would those skies count as sunny. :)
*laughs in american*
It's wild to think you guys went from just some dudes singing in a small room to actually being able to procure time on a boat. Good stuff.
I've never been particularly inclined to join a singing group. This channel has changed that
congrats!
I only just now got a notification, keep up the good work
Been listening for 3 years now! Felt like yesterday I started singing along with these songs!
The fact that you were able to film on this incredible ship says a lot.
I love Dave's nails!

Seeing the comparison and progress just makes me so emotional all on its own
Sea Shanties have just recently become one of my favorite types of music to listen to, thanks to you guys
