Your videos never cease to amaze me. From the haunting music to the superb photo-fades, they are absolutely fantastic and, although I haven't even visited most of the sites in your videos, I really feel like I have when I have finished watching. Very educational. Absolutely Brilliant.
Darren, just watched your video of Bradford and now just watched this video. i grew up on baildon green and remember walking through the woods to the funfair on rainy/foggy sunday mornings with my two mates, i was approx 8 years old. We would climb over the wall into the funfair and play on the swings for free. They were the kind a bit like a gondola, with two ropes that were pulled alterternatively and the swing moved, i seem to remember they were red and yellow.. There was also the aerial glide that we used to play on and climb on. i remember also the old penny arcade games that used to line one of the sides of the funfair, the type where you fire a steel ball and try to land it in one of the cups and if you were succesful, you turned a round handle and you won a packet of fruit polos or something. We also used to swim in the reservoir at the bottom of the glen and collect tadpoles there too. i had a fantastic childhood there,
Sensational video and presented like a professional. Far better than what is on tv. I've said this before, I'm an overweight 51 year old that drinks too much but I would give my right arm to come with you on these adventures. You may need to wait for me to catch up but I make a decent brew! Great video Darren, you're one of the best on this platform.
My mother was born in Bradford in 1926 in Melville Court, known as Sh*tpot Yard by the locals. She developed dementia in her later years and would constantly talk about their annual trips to Shipley Glen from the Woollen Mill where her father worked. It seems like it was a magical and exciting place for a child growing up in 1930s Bradford.
It may be hard for some to comprehend but places like Shipley Glen were so magical to so many kids who were growing up in harsh poverty. I grew up on an estate in the 90s not too far from here and this place was such a beautiful escape. I’ve not lived in the area for a very long time so it’s very sad to see it disappear because those estates are still there.
Darren, you really do give us some fantastic content, well researched and presented. But I'm afraid they do have the almost magical ability to break my heart. To see what we had and what we've lost! And all through ignorance of the past and what it means to us. Keep up the good work though. 👏 I love em really.
Brilliant. Thank you Darren, I'v been living in Wales for the the past 30 years and Shipley Glen had changed beyond recognition then. I remember the tramway and some little roundabout. As a teenager I used to borrow a pony and ride around the glen amongst the old bell pits. There has been so much inndustrial, social and architectural lost we need you Darren to bring it all back to life.
Wow absolutely love this video….. love shipley glen went to the fair all the time as a child especially in the school hols …. The dodgems were brilliant aswell … I remember going on then and we were on them for a full hour. ❤🎉
My grandparents bought the Japanese Gardens from Mr. Hartley in 1926 and ran the tearooms there for many years. The Gardens were created by Mr. Hartley for his wife who was an invalid. The small castle on the island in the boating pond and the arches in the gardens were made from cinder/clinker and whitewashed. It is a great shame that the Gardens and fairground were built over. By the way, the Hen you refer to was actually called the Duck. It was an open vehicle, probably a car, with modified bodywork to look like a duck with seating for about 8. It used to go in a circle near where the swing boats used to be.
Very interesting you got most of it right but some things you left out. Especially with paddling pool. And the large wooden built swings. Used to love to go on the boat around the Japanese gardens. Good memories.
I loved going here in the summer when I was a kid, we would walk from Idle down to the canal then all the way to Saltaire. We would then catch the tram up and I remember the dodgems and the amusement arcade next to them and the fairground further up. We would always bring a picnic with us ad play on the rocks
I seem to remember that somewhere near the garden lake boat ride, there being another garden with a little railway in it where you sat on it straddled the track and the train just went back and forth. (A bit like the ones in Keighley and Shipley) but I have never been able to find photos of that so not sure whether I remember incorrectly. There was a youtube vide with a bit of the garden boat ride too. I guess you will cover the fairground in a different video as there was a lot to cover there. Great video for memories.
This is fantastic Darren, I remember going as a small child, when I had kids of my own I have taken them several times. The museum is very interesting.
As you look at the dodgems, to the left of them was the aerial tramway. Seats suspended below an overhead track. Both of those attractions ceased operations when I was young, in the 1960s.
Great video, I’ll have to have a Drone Adventure myself there sometime. Great to see some of the things I remember and to see what was there even further back in time.
Darren, this was such a enjoyable watch, your narration and facts presented was top-notch. great use of photo fades. Amazing how people would get so dressed up just for an afternoon out. Thanks for keeping your local and regional history alive.
Your videos are always interesting and innovative...but this is something else. Magical even. I agree with the rest of the comments...such a pity that this lost, more simple world has gone forever. But you are preserving it for future generations to marvel at. Thank you!
From what I recall, the family owners of the fairground decided to close it and sell the land for housing as they would get lots of money for it, the aerial way was listed in 2004.
Another great video Darren, living in Baildon I'm on the glen everyday with my dog, its a wonder we didn't bump into one another. As you say, not a lot left now. Any one watching your video for the first time should look at the Milner Field and Saltaire videos of yours to link them together, Titus, his village, the house and the workers playground ( the glen ) etc. Looking forward to part 2. Regards.
Excellent video Darren, shame all the old attractions have gone. I have seen a few videos about the abandoned dodgems and things and they were so fascinating seeing them just left there, an attraction in itself.
Also used to ride the dogems as a kid in the 90’s. The old bloke who used to own and run them lived on the hill at the other side of the tramway. I’m pretty sure he was a concentration camp survivor but my memory of that is a bit sketchy
Great vid, really enjoyed it! Absolutely love your photo fades, but not as much as I loved seeing you wearing your petit officers hat in one of your live chats 😂 Hey you can leave your hat on Darren! ❤xx
Your videos Are very interesting I like the way you do your picture fades vary gently and profound effect same as the video fade they really gives you a sense of what it was like to be there thanks for taking time to make these videos, looking forward to your next video best regards.🙂
Been missing a lot of your videos. I’ve been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. There is no cure. Will follow you and your channel as long as possible. See you on the next! ❤😊
Darren another superb video content second to none video photo fades spot on.the way you're going you're video and content level is going to be recognised by a higher level and move you up a level.
Damned Darren, thanks for these episodes, all my childhood flooding back but not as far back as the Victorian era 🧐. I was correct when i said last week (and in the past on Saltaire) that group walking took place from the Glen pub/tea room/amusements on Bank Holiday Monday (Easter?) As a family from in and around Birkenshaw and Batley it was a trip out, bus to Bradford, then Saltaire and walk to the Glen Railway and up to the Glen amusements. Kids had pop and crisps, adults a few beers, a rest then the group walkings over to Ilkley then the main attraction for us kids was the train ride back to Bradford. Your film shows the crowds walking on the Glen top. There was also another pub on the Keithley Road(?) which was another pit stop before the Ilkley Moor walk started. Im sure some others who follow you must remember the Ilkley walks on that Bank Holiday Mondays. Honestley im not imagining it 🥴 Anyway Cheers DougT
Doug, the pub just before ilkley moor walk is Dick Hudsons, we were there last week for a sunday roast, its a nice pit stop if youre walking from Ilkley to shipley over the moors
Are family was born in ship playing spent lots of time up at Shipley glen. Does anyone know what happened to the carousel ride. Where did it go it was a magnificent carousel. It was in the 50s and 60s
Hello Darren how are you fancstic vidio of Shipley glen I remember the train there but not the doghams I have been to Shipley once with my sister are you doing any take that tribute gig's much love and best wishes take care stay safe xx ❤😅😅
remember being on it (at least the rickety steel thing with the suspended chairs) -- and being terrified that the thing would lust crumble away. Though again i canr remember how much is memory and how much is dream re-enactment.
Television has a lot to answer for. Now then nippers, shall we go out into the wind and the rain to go on that Japanese boat ride? Or d'you wanna stay in and watch Peppa Pig?
I have some images of here from when I was a kid, then when it was derelict, i sneaked in .. can I ask if there was an incident with a young boy, 🤔 I know I sound like a nutter but I saw a boy dressed in a little flat cap and school uniform 🤔
Sounds like we're both a similar age and had the same childhood exploring around here as kids. Do you remember the old sweet shop/ naff toy shop that was next to where the dodgems were?? I'm always sharing your videos with my Dad to reminisce about exploring all these places when I was a kid.
hah dodgems -- you revisioinst --- They were Bumper cars --- i always remember being really really annoyed whien you were thrown off them cause you drove to bump into other cars - what was the point of just driving not to hit
As a child it Shipley Glen was magical. It was like being at the seaside for the day. We'd walk there in those days from Windhill.
Well done matching the views .
Such a pity that these places are being erased/forgotten as the years pass

Thanks mate. Much appreciated
The photo-fades are absolutely magical in making the history so real. Thanks for your work.

I am now 72 and remember going there on the chairoplanes when I was about 6. Magic place. Thank you.

Brilliant. The way you fade in and out the pictures or photos is outstanding. Thank you Darren. Another masterpiece. Well done.
An excellent vid as always. The effort and work you put into the channel is much appreciated.
Thanks Darren, never heard of this place before, but it looks like it was tremendous back in the day

I miss the fairground up Shipley Glen, thankfully the tram still runs.

Interesting historical video. I didn't realise it had so much to offer back then.
❤ great videos so many memories growing up in the 80s
School holiday trips to the glen
I remember the old bumper cars used to get faster and faster
Lovely to see this idyllic little village. Your research Darren is awesome.
Always like it when you do the photo fade overs. Very interesting video. Thanks for showing Darren 👍🏻☀️😎
Thanks 👍
I've never heard of the place, really fascinating the history and the lost of it.
Loved it. Wish I'd been alive back then.
Thank you for this fantastic history of the beautiful Shipley Glen. Photo-fades great. Look forward to next part.
Many thanks!
Very interesting you got most of it right but some things you left out. Especially with paddling pool. And the large wooden built swings. Used to love to go on the boat around the Japanese gardens. Good memories.
Immer wieder sehr schön anzusehen damals und heute.

This is fantastic Darren, I remember going as a small child, when I had kids of my own I have taken them several times. The museum is very interesting.

Not yet
Can’t help but think everything looked poorly maintained. Even the tea rooms garden looked overgrown with weeds and needed cleaning up. It looked sad.
Pity about them poor dodgems.
