This was a lot of fun to watch. I don't agree with all of your likes and dislikes, but I just learned that I am supper trendy because I don't follow trends. I look at them and if I like what I see, I adopt them to my own kitchen, but for me function trumps everything else, because I cook every day and bake a lot of the days.
I've been brainstorming how to update my kitchen with details consistent with the era of my 1930s house. Ironically, I'm noticing a lot of those same 1930s/Art Deco trends coming back in style. Design trends seems to come in/out/and back in again. I think each person could theoretical choose any design they like and it'll come back into style eventually 🤷♀️
I agreed with most of the things you love, except for black kitchens, and wood tone kitchens. Black kitchens as a dirt magnet, and I have lived with wood toned kitchens most of my life. When we reno our kitchen, we are going with white cabinets, and the slab style look. I need to ponder the no wall cabinets idea, that piques my interest, and would make my super small kitchen look more open.
I matched you on 38 of them except the knobs on cabinet doors (but they have to be chrome) and open shelves, it allows for plants and my beautiful jug to be displayed. Love your channel Mark ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m designing my forever home. I put a Fun and colorful “Starbucks Bistro” style in my first house, went with traditional dark expresso shaker cabinets at my second house and am really liking the two tone trend, light wood on the bottom and white on top with lots of glass doors. I’d like to hear your thoughts on two tone kitchens. I always learn something from watching your videos. Thanks
Hey, thanks so much. While I am a super fan of an all white kitchen, I really like two-tone kitchens too. I've had one in the past myself. This will always be a trend we can count on imo. The colors may vary, but the style is pretty solid.
This was fun. I didn’t actually keep track of my score but I think one thing to keep in mind is that the kitchen should match the style of the rest of your house. So my last house was built in 1945 and I had an all-white kitchen in it. I have a more rustic house in the woods now and definitely went with wooden cabinets and a bold pattern granite. Have you ever thought about having subscribers send pictures of their kitchens for commentary/critique/suggestions?
Black Stainless Steel appliances are starting to get trendy. We were thinking about doing that for our kitchen but thought it would probably get outdated. And good editing by the way, but I was hoping you'd do a "camera in the refrigerator" a la Alton Brown!
Our remodel got pushed back to July because the oven hasn't come in. Anyway, we are doing smoky blue cabinets(all bottoms but sink are drawers!), black hardware, and Cambria Montgomery for counter tops. Needless to say this year is dragging...
Loved this video. Obviously not everyone is going to agree but it's sort of a nice list to run through for yourself to get thinking about what features or "trends" you like or want in a kitchen. I'm more of the idea that all features or trends can work but not necissarily with everything. You just got to work out what works together and what is more important. Go for what you love but obviously if you plan to sell certain trends and styles are gonna be less or more attractive. I have a fairly consistent taste in trends but if your taste changes quickly also be aware certain things are easier to change than others. Again love your vids and keep up the good work. You always bring a smile to my face :)
hey Mark, love your contents! Do you mind share bit more about what you don't like about quartz countertops? I'm guessing pattern isn't the reason (if I'm right) because there are so many options! Too many videos are talking about how great quartz countertop is especially for its low maintenance and high durability but would be nice to hear more different thoughts. Thank you!
Hey Nika. My main issue with quartz is lack of heat resistance. However, most people use a trivet and there will never be an issue. Otherwise it is a great choice. Just be really careful with a scolding hot pot. I have a bunch of videos talking about it but this most recent one talks about that specifically. ua-cam.com/video/-V9e6HiVOh8/v-deo.html
lololol, sorta hate it, sorta love it, kinda like it wait ... lololol. Funny. I am not trendy in the kitchen but I do enjoy some of them with regard to food fun. BUT as for my kitchen, it's really all about how I use my space. lol on the OTR - Oh Jackie, I think of her now each time I hear OTR. Didn't even know that word before this channel. Have a great weekend. PS: I recently started to binge LeChic's channel and Kitcheninsider. All three of you are fun to watch/listen to when I'm cleaning. Happy Weekend!
I have a small galley kitchen with a relatively large empty wall (no corners). I'm seriously considering putting a couple of open shelves on that otherwise empty wall to free up my limited drawer and cabinet space. Since I live in a warm climate, I can store canned food in my garage (which is right next to the kitchen). I finally figured out what "OTR" means. That's one minor area where we may disagree. I'm looking to maximize the counter real estate in my small space. I only have 9 feet to work with on each side. I saw a microwave with a lower profile than normal. It also has a 400 cfm built-in fan. I'm also considering using Formica for my backsplash instead of tile. Taking the granite or quartz up the wall is also an option, but I want to put my money where it's most useful. I'm also about 95% sure I'm going to remove the cabina=et above my refrigerator. I can't reach it, (I'd need 8-foot arms and I'm 6 feet tall) and the former owner had to cut the bottom of the cabinet to fit the unit in. That cabinet is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
Screen door on a submarine! haha. love it. Well, the thing with OTR's is that if they are the only option, or you just happen to love them, then they are the right choice. As long as it vents outside!
@@MTKDofficial The microwave/hood vent will replace a harvest gold vent hood that goes outside. I'll have to add an electric outlet and some new duct work. My bottom cabinets have nice large drawers, which I love. I'm looking into replacing the existing drawer hardware to provide for full drawer extension because I'm going to paint rather than replace my cabinets. I'll never remodel a kitchen with bottom cabinet doors. There's one lower cabinet that has a large pull-out drawer that accommodated a trash can, but those were smaller when the house was designed, so newer receptacles don't fit. I'm also getting an Ikea (or similar) roll-around cart which I could use for my current microwave or as added prep space for large meals (which are few and far between). I'm getting a lot of good ideas on your channel. Thanks.
I have a 1992 original kitchen. Formica light green counters, real (light) wood cabinets….and white square black splash tiles. It’s fine….ish. But, some of those pics you showed….ahhh….swoon. Thankful….but, can enjoy dreaming. Nice love-hate video, BTW.
21/25 - we disagree on statement marble, quartz countertops, black kitchens, and, shocker, green kitchens! Gasp. How do you feel about handleless drawers and doors?
I have a bunch of videos on quartz. Some I’m more “for” than “against”. However, as far as surfaces go, quartz is a great option if you want decent stain resistance and something easy to clean. For a countertop of that dollar value, I am also looking for superior heat and impact resistance. So I lean toward natural materials.
Ummm...I just watched a bunch of your videos where you praised Quartz (not as much as laminate, though), but in this video you gave it a thumbs down. Can you elaborate? Thank you.
Like I mentioned in the video, the degree to which I "hate" something is a grey area. Plus as time goes on I am appreciating natural stone options more and more. Quartz, if treated well, should last a lifetime and is generally a good choice. But the lack of heat resistance is an issue for me.
@@MTKDofficial Having grown up with laminate and (horrors!) tile and then having laminate for 30 years myself, it always perplexes me when people are so adamant about being able to put a hot pan directly on the countertop. Haven't done that ever and doesn't bother me at all. That said, I am not a fan of the quartz with the large veins - always screams fake to me.
That green kitchen was not representative. It was way too over-the-top green and the tile's green did not go with the cabinet's green. I have green cabinets and green & grey marble backsplash so I 'love' green kitchens but 'hated' that kitchen in the photo you used.
“Love it or hate it” isn’t a bad set up. I do find it rather irradiating when you say you love or essentially hate something and don’t give supporting info. (for instance the sconces, I wanna know why you “hate” them what makes you view them as impractical, unattractive so on. I’m genuinely interested in the answer bc I’m obviously here for your input, however I need more info than this specific UA-camr doesn’t like sconces so let’s leave them off the renovation list)
Hey! Appreciate the comment. Very good point. For this particular video, I didn’t want to get into the weeds and end up with a long video. However, I will consider that in other video formats and be sure to add more explanation. Appreciate it!
