You two are so cute together!
It's weird how homosexuality is viewed in different countries. Despite being different races people assume you're sisters but when I went to Spain with my sister people assumed we were married.

    • @m2ukass

In my country that is high-tech and really up to date with random things. Same-sex marriage is illegal. A couple, one American, one from my country, married in America, wanted to live here. And they didn't give the American girl access to live here because here same sex marriage is not legal, so their marriage is not valid. I'm so shamed.

Back when I was dating a white boy in my teens everyone assumed we were siblings. I’m not even gay. Now that my boyfriend is much darker than me that’s not an issue, thankfully, although now we get people who don’t seem to think we’re together until it’s undeniable. When I walk up to him at a cash register the clerk just seems confused for a solid minute.

As a Malaysian gay woman who is currently in a relationship, the country is indeed changing, hopefully for the better. Having lived in England for 11 years and finally coming home, I can definitely see that while indeed it's still considered very conservative and not as open-minded due to race politics and also religion, it's perfectly normal to spot other gay couples out and about their lives in public. It's not as low key as it used to have to be, but like you rightly said, we don't go around flaunting the rainbow haha. And even if we did, it just doesn't seem to occur to people as quickly that it could be something related to the gaaaaay! Anyway, can't say how happy I feel to see Claudia out here on the interwebs representing both our culture and our community!

I feel like lesbians being able to hide behind the assumption of friendship when they hug or hold hands is super lucky. I'm a gay male who comes from a conservative area and came out when gay intercourse and marriage were both separately illegal in his area and no one ever assumed we were friends. And a good few showed that they didn't quite openly. Anyways, I'm glad you're safe in Malaysia.

    • @alisonlaett9625
      @alisonlaett9625 6 років тому +96

Ya :/ It's a double edged sword though. As a lesbian, you can pass as straight, which can help you be safe, but do you really /want/ to pass as straight all the time? Recognition of your existence feels very good. Lesbians are dismissed as "oh lesbians don't exists, girls are just affectionate with each other". Gay males and lesbians face different kinds of challenges, unique but both equally oppressive in different ways.

There is much more to ethnicities in Malaysia. You'd see if you go to the Bornean part of Malaysia which is Sabah and Sarawak. I'll list a few, I don't know all because that's a whole fuck load of ethnicities and I'm not about that memorizing life:
    Kadazan
    Dusun
    Kadazan-dusun
    Sino(Chinese+Kadazan)
    Bidayuh
    Kedayan
    Iban
    Kokos(cocos)
    Bugis(Malay)
    Indian
    Bajau(Malay)
    Santong(Chinese ethnic group)
    Jawa(Malay)
Suluk(Stray bullet, it's philipino but whatevs)
    Etc.
In Peninsula Malaysia, there are only 3 categories of RACES which is Malay, Indian and Chinese but these races itself has other groups in it as you can see from the list(it's only a gist of what goes on under the sheets over here. People love to make mixed race babies).
For example, in Peninsula, to be Malay you must be a muslim and can speak Malay language well. It doesn't matter what race you came from, if you convert and can speak Malay well, you're Malay but of course this is only on paper because imagine that eh? That'a bloody offensive to the Chinese and Indians.
But at the Bornean parts of Malaysia, you can identify on whatever race you are as long as you have the blood. For example, I'm half Arabic and half Malay(Not really, I'm more foreign than I am Malay but I don't want to get deported. Jk). So what I identify as when people ask me is: Arabic-Malay.
Then you might ask, "what about the race category on Malaysian IC(Identification card)?"
    Ah, there are 4 categories:
    1)Malay
    2)Bumiputera
    3)Chinese
    4)Indian.
Bumiputera is for the natives of Sabah and Sarawak since we(I say we, but I'm like...4% Sabahan by blood. Butts!) are not the same race with Malays but we are native citizens so they just call us...bumiputera. which probably means: Owner of land.
    Bumi(Land, ground), Putera(Prince aka owner)
Then some people might also ask, "Doesn't the vast categorization of race segregate you all?"
My answer will be, you are only segregated by race when you let it.
At where I live, no. Sabahans and Sarawakians don't give a shit because as one Sarawakian said it on the news after Mount Kinabalu collapsed: "We share the same land, when Sabahans are hurt. We feel their pain just as much". I can't say about peninsula though because there is a bit of subconscious segregation but we don't really care about race here just don't be a dick and KISS THE FUCKING FLAG AND BE PROUD OF THIS COUNTRY, YOU SCHMUKS!
    "How is the country's racism?"
Not black and white, a lot of grey shades. Difficult to solve. But overall, the racism in Malaysia is not intense because after all, we overcame divide and conquer to become independent(Suck that, Queen Liz! Sorry).
The people fight, bicker. We insult each other but at the end of the day, we'll still gather around at a mamak(slang for Muslim Indian) restaurant to watch football and complain about the gov over teh tarik and roti canai. That's just the Malaysian way. Fight all you want but after that, hug and make up.
Hope this helps at some degree. My jokes are dumb. Sorry.

Melody Ilola Probably a lot harder. I can’t say for all of Asia, but in Malaysia there’s a lot less information about dietary requirements/restrictions and allergies. Also, a lot of the things are cooked in the same pot/wok with only a rinse in between. Sometimes even if you tell someone in advance they let it slide and still cook you the same ( I can’t say for everyone but I’ve seen it happen before) due
to lack of information, general forgetfulness and more. That being said, these are mostly experiences from more street food style restaurants/cafes and I think if you go to a more higher end store they’ll probably try their best and hook you up with something. It also depends what food you are eating, if you’re vegetarian, my best bet would be Chinese/Indian food as more people of that ethnic group are vegetarians. Also, food ingredient lists are not really a thing at restaurants. Sorry if I rambled on for too long and I hope this was (somewhat) helpful.

I am absolutely blown away by how gorgeous the area is around your hotel in the last half of the video. My jaw dropped and I feel speechless! Since you’re no longer staying there, would you mind sharing what the place was called? I would LOVE to go there someday.
Also, where did Claudia’s shoes from the very beginning of the video come from? They look so cute and comfy.

Gorgeous! Thanks for taking us along! And I think the more you spend time with someone the more you start to resemble each other which may explain the silly people. I think I’ve been called a sister or twin with almost every best friend I’ve ever had! On the other hand people always think my actual brother is my boyfriend. 🤷🏽‍♀️ eew.

I’m finally catching up with all of your vlogs, and it is so interesting to hear you discuss Malaysia. I’m currently doing a module about the colonial presence of the British in SE Asia, which means I’ve been learning a whole lot about Malay culture and the development of the ethnic groupings. I also had an essay about Siam (Thailand) evading formal colonial control. I find it all so fascinating and these vlogs are just making me even more excited to eventually visit both countries one day!

As someone struggling with chronic illness at 19, (since the age of 14) (physical fibromyalgia, scoliosis, osteoporosis, gout, potential benign hyper mobility disorder (soon to be confirmed) and potential endometriosis (soon to be confirmed) and mental (anorexia, major depression, generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD, and borderline)
I find it so motivating to see you living live despite your disabilities, I often find myself feeling sorrow for the life I could’ve had, but seeing you live the way you do, it motivates me to believe maybe, one day, I will be able to accomplish true happiness, and true “normality” (as much as someone with physical disabilities can.) Seeing you participate in such normal activities gives me genuine hope.
