This week is the Beetronics Royal Jelly, the flagship OD/Fuzz pedal from the LA pedal company.

I have to say, those are some pretty knobs. They stand out over the art on the box.

Most people won’t believe it but just 15 years ago if you had this show you’d be absolutely crucified by the boo-tweakers and all their fanboys. FSB opened up the world of goop and tweaks, and every stompbox, to the world.

You should do a beetronics Octahive! I'd love to see what transistors they use
Another great teardown! I really love Beetronics' board design, they're hardly the only company to put a bit of artwork on their PCB but they really go the extra mile! Honestly their design philosophy in general is really solid, the pedals themselves both look great and are really solidly built. You gonna trace this one out? There's not many schematics out there for their stuff and I'm sure the FSB crowd (myself included) would appreciate it out of academic curiosity if nothing else.
No, truth is I hate tracing SMD. But, it's 4049 based, so probably not worlds apart from your tube sound fuzz / red llama / hot tubes.
A trick I've learned taking those stupid little hockey puck knobs off EHX pedals is to grab a couple spoons from the kitchen and use one on each side to push the knob up.
Just gotta be careful with the metal on the enclosure. That's why the plastic tire lever is nice!
@@graybenchelec you can also place a piece of fabric (kitchen towel, rag, etc.) underneath the knob and pull. I used this method to pull off knobs from guitar

I just traded a Fairfield Circuitry About 900 for one of these and I feel like I got the better end of the deal. The person I got it from was a synth guy, so maybe he feels differently. Anyways, great teardown on an even better pedal. Holding onto this one.

Great teardown! Do you think through-hole is better than surface mount for pedals?
Generally, the opposite is true. Through hole is easier to repair, SMD wins in basically every other category.
I'm kinda new to effects pedals and currently having some trouble figuring out if Royal Jelly should be placed at the front of my signal chain. I heard that most fuzz pedals should be placed at the front of the signal chain because of the input impedance (which I'm not sure what it is), but I also know that overdrive pedals are not usually placed in the front. Could you give me some clue about this pedal's input impedance (and output impedance) and if it's fuzz circuit is just like that of the other fuzz pedals?
The short answer is try both and see which you prefer, you won't hurt anything. In this case, I wouldn't worry about putting the royal jelly after other pedals. But generally speaking I put distortion pedals before mod/reverb pedals.
@@graybenchelecthx! I had the same question. Seems like one or two-transistor fuzz pedals are the most organic/sensitive, so need to go first in the chain. This one being all op amps might be ok elsewhere.
Royal Jelly should be considered an IC fuzz, regardless of the order of the links.

Are you purposely stopping at opamps, or would you consider going slightly more in depth with some units... Namely, diode choices and path locations? (If and when you can discern them... W smt components and PCBs like this, I get why you don't.)

I'm intentionally not going further than showing the guts. I've traced some earlier pedals, but I feel weird about it now, at least for any pedal in current production.
The teardown series is really just about showing the build techniques and quality of the pedal inside, not necessarily how the circuit works.
