@@SightAfterDark it's always a lot of fun for me to watch people become exposed to Frank Zappa's music!! A lot of the reactions remind me of myself when I first heard a lot of this stuff!! Frank used to frequent discotheques quite often. His observations of the denisons of those establishments were the inspiration for quite a few numbers like this one.
For Frank nothing is sacred. Definitely not a song I'd play for a newbie but once you understand the Zappa zeitgeist you're able to appreciate what he is doing.
This is what I call Frank's anthropological/troll stage (he released Joe's Garage the same year, kind of the companion piece to Sheik). This album wasn't so much about the music but the commentary. He thinks romantic songs suck or that "broken hearts are for assholes," that dumb/cute people are not only annoying but need to be put in their place, that a "Jewish Princess" and even "Yo mama" need to be studied and commented on. Frank loved entertaining and being entertained, so if there's wasn't anyone around to do it, he did it, thus this very entertaining album, one that poked and prodded you to think about your own prejudices and biases and maybe even to get you pissed off enough to take a deeper look at all the bullshit going on around you. Great stuff.
This album and Joe's Garage were his middle finger to the record industry. All the anger and frustration poured out in scathing lyrics and hard driving music...I always considered Sheik to be his angriest album since We're Only In It For The Money.
As far as I’m concerned, FZ gets a pass on all of the social controversy, both past and present. It’s brutally honest satirical commentary and something he took more seriously than people think. It wasn’t all just to take the piss and get a rise out of people, although that was definitely big part of it. As Laraine Newman said in his defense at the time, “It’s not only funny, it’s dead-on. Such creatures do exist.” Or something to that effect.
Yo Mama was written specifically for Tommy Mars after he couldn't play Little House I Used to Live In from memory insinuating that Tommy should go back to his momma.
@@jimhardiman3836 I thought it was about Adrian Belew after he had left Frank in the middle of the 1977 tour to play with David Bowie. There's a great story of Belew inviting Frank to eat out with him and Bowie, and Frank calling Bowie "Capt. Tom" the whole evening.

Laraine Newman of SNL, who is Jewish, said the song was hilarious and that there was nothing in it that wasn't true. The ADL (Anti defamation League) filed a protest with the FCC to have the album banned from airplay, which is funny since frank didn't get any airplay in the US. and only resulted in increased sales of the album. For this song, published on the album Sheik Yerbouti (Feb 1979), Zappa received the accusation of anti-semitism. On the following album Joes Garage Act I (Sep 1979) he answered this criticism musically with the funny song "Catholic Girls". In the last part of this song, the lead melody of Jewish Princess is overdubbed. Have fun, you both!
A comment about all the Lone Ranger references ("Hi-yo Silver!")... When on the road they would see something on TV or in the news that would trigger a sense of humor, and Zappa would OK certain songs during a show for the band to riff on verbally.

I remember my then boss and I discussing if he was taunting his previous label (Warner) with these albums (Sheik, and Joe's Garage), because they wouldn't grant him early release from his contract. Either way, those three albums were still busting some prudes in those days.
I’ve been a fan of Sheik Yerbouti for decades, but still remember the day I was driving in my car and it dawned on me that the album name was pronounced Shake Your Bootie and I had to pull over because I couldn’t stop laughing.
Sometimes I wonder if he wrote the most outrageous lyrics just to strengthen himself to the attacks he'd inevitably receive and to hone his inner power to not give two shits.

And now that you have gone over to the sleazier side of Frank's humor... get ready for some patreon to request something REALLY offensive...lol... and YES... in Frank's catalog of sleazy songs... there are MUCH worse... get mentally prepared... it won't make you cringe as much... beleive me... this is still pretty tame.
Bobby Brown is pretty bad
How 'bout BROKEN HEARTS ARE FOR ASSHOLES or I'M SO CUTE!
@@jimhardiman3836 it's politically and socially nasty... BUT... it's not the worst... far from it... and I think they have already reacted to that... I was thinking more Briefcase Boogie or Do You Like my new Car? from Fillmore--- that just might be a boiling point. lol.
@@wowwhywow Brown Shoes Don't Make It and Magdalena are the only ones that make me cringe, and mainly because that kind of shit actually happens.
One of my personal favorite albums. It's a great song. Somebody had to do it. Best it was Frank.
Frank would make it on satellite radio today. You guys need to post the entire sheik yer bouti album for your viewers. Why not complete the Zappa catalogue by playing all the songs on this best selling album? Why not? Waiting for the patreons ,it will never happen! There are great songs on the album and lots of them.
It's not just a few finger pointing songs to the record industry, as Peter K INCORRECTLY posted.
You got a lot of views aleady, in just 2 days on one of his spoof songs of the album. There are others, bobby brown, etc, but also some great metal type rock as well,""I'm so cute"", city of tiny lights, rat tomago, etc.
And what about Zoot allures?? Dan even said Torture never stops was one of his favorite. These two albums are the peak, prime and the meat of Zappa's greatness
Looks like you should go on patreon and suggest it 😉
When you want to comment, but everything you have has already been said...
try "trouble every day" 1968

Thanks guys! With all going on in the world, we all need a bit of Jewish Princess right about now! There is a particular man in Russia that’s in dire need! 😱
Glad you enjoyed Scott!
Musically its interesting and I must try and knock out an Irish version such as." I want a horrible Weasley Irish dancer with mobile legs and long straight arms Who is completely without charms. I dont want me no red faced Potato eater who puts it out by the metre. No even thats not right.
Yes , away with pc and too long toes and " this is so hurtful" and laugh , people laugh. Don't always think it's about you.Zappa fought his whole life against censorship. That is why his lyrics were so extreme. Irony, where did it go.
