@Get Zappéd 1974 I just like the track. I left school some time ago. I’m not prepared to write an essay about the virtues of a lighthearted track by mr Zappa. If you feel so strongly. Why don’t you mr 1974
After about 40 years of listening to Zappa (ugh I'm old now) I'm still amazed at Frank's ability to mix a ridiculous silly comical idea and amazing expert level music writing and musicianship and have them work so well together. His bands are always so incredibly tight yet still feel loose so it's not robotic sounding. I'm not that great at describing it but Frank's bands were always great at doing it.
You guys have officially made it, this song could only be fully appreciated by a true FZ fan, newbies would have trouble handling it. The Muffin Man, City of Tiny Lites, and this were from the same set of shows, all at the Palladium around Halloween 77. (the movie made from those shows by Frank is Baby Snakes, as many have mentioned). If you want to see Terry more recently, there are Dweezil ZPZ vids out there featuring him from early 2000s. If you haven't taken the time to watch the round table of Zappa drummers (Ralph, Chester, Terry, and Chad) along with Ruth discussing their days in his band, I have attached the link below. Incredible stories! And thanks to Wayne for picking the version with the full intro and the improved audio, there are subpar versions of the same vid out there.

Amazing showcase for the great Terry Bozzio. Terry is still around. He plays with different ensembles and does drum clinics everywhere. His drum set now a days is so huge - it's out of control. Though some might find this piece offensive it actually has a lot of powerful, beautiful musical moments. Note they play the melody to old 30's classic "Isn't It Romantic" at 2:55. Funny. Of course Zappa ends the song on my favorite chord D/C but that's besides the point. I saw this concert when FZ debuted his movie "Baby Snakes" back in 1979 at the Beacon Theater. In that big screened, loud volume setting, the audience was left speechless. Ha! I knew you folks would see it at one point.
No doubt, Frank rides the edge of the knife between homophobia and satirizing homophobia. Kudos to be one of the earliest references to gender fluidity I've heard.

Good choice. When the 'Zappa in New York' album came out in 1977 it included Punky's Whips - well for a day or so until Angel's record company threatened a lawsuit, at which Warner Brothers, Frank's label at the time, pulled the album from the shops and re-released it without Punky's Whips. For collectors, and I include myself, you can find (or bought at the time, as I did) copies with Punky's, without Punky's, and a few with Punky's on the LP sleeve but not on the record. Of course Punky Meadows, lead singer of Angel, whom the song is all about, was delighted by the song - being satirized by FZ surely, for a young metal singer, meant he had made it! And then the track was pulled. I'd love to say that my dog Bozzio came in and watched the video with me, but he's seen it all before......
Terry just turned 70. He still performs solo percussion concerts on his massive set. You need to watch Broken Hearts Are For Assholes and Titties And Beer from this same concert for more Terry/Frank action.
I have to honour you two! This song took me years to get my head around and you seem to have caught the essence on the first listening. It is one of those Zappa pieces (just like the whole of the Joe's Garage album), that you can listen to for years and suddenly hear something (in the drums, the vocals, the lyrics, the bass, the guitar etc etc etc etc etc etc...) and the lights will come on in your head and you will think - I have never noticed that before. Said it before - " the guy was a frickin' genius!"
It is the same concert as muffin man. Terry Bozzio is a world class drummer. This was 3 or 4 day's leading up to Halloween night when this concert was filmed. I was there on the 29th always a great show by Frank and company.✌️❤️😃
Terry's still kicking, as far i know. He and wife Dale formed the band 'Missing Persons' after they left Frank's band, and had some big radio hits (e.g., 'Nobody Walks In L.A.')
I just listened to you guys play Peaches and Regalia and then right to Punky's Whips. That's Frank. He covered the gambit: punk, electronic, soul, metal, country, jazz, you name it. But most of all, Frank LOVED to entertain and be entertained. The master of sight and sound.
Hats off to you guys for even attempting to react/review this live masterpiece. Back in the day , this was so entertaining to see them poke fun at Punky Meadows. You guys are awesome and on top of your music for sure. This is music that you just don’t get in the modern era.

@@SightAfterDark haha, indeed..they never seem in a rush to ask me to play more FZ after seeing this,no idea why ha..i must widen my circle of friends!!
I was at the palladium post xmas 1977. Live in ny was a great show with don pardo and FZ crew. We walked back to grand central on air. Also saw baby snakes in a little theater in Manhattan shortly after. Frank is the best.
Classic. Just classic. Excellent choice! Same concert from the Palladium from The Baby Snakes movie footage. Was at one of those shows. This is my favorite Zappa teenage ensemble. A few years after this Terry, Patrick O'Hearn, Terry's wife Dale went on to form the band Missing Persons
"Punky's Whips" first appeared on the original 1977 version of "Zappa in New York". A very small handful of stores received copies before Warner Brothers pulled it. One was a variety shop (electronics, jewelry, records, etc) in downtown Tucson whose record section was a cornucopia of hard to find items (VU banana cover, Heart's original "Magazine" just to name two). They had about six copies, but I didn't have enough cash, and nobody my age had plastic back then. When I came back a few days later they told me they had sold their last one that morning, but they could call me when the next shipment came. Well, that was six months later with the "official" release, which omitted "Punky's Whips", and cut almost a minute out of "Titties and Beer", both of which were in violation of Zappa's contract with WB. Original copies rarely come on the market, and when they do the price is astronomical. That shop will be one of my first stops when I get my time machine.
It is hard to believe but I read Zappa actually succeeded in getting Punky up to join in on stage during one of these performances, and amazingly he actually took it in good humor.
Another great choice from this concert. If you want to have some fun, check out the Dance contest from this same show. Great fun, and a look at what he thought of Warner Brothers you also get to meet some of New York's exciting Zappa fans.
Yes I was there but not on Halloween night. Seeing Frank on Halloween in New York, was the best. My favorite shows were at that venue. The Palladium 126 East 14th Street. I live in New Haven, Ct. So N.Y. Springfield, Providence, & Boston, we're all near by. But New York remains my favorite.
Terry has played in Missing Persons, drums on Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop, helped DW produce the Black Page snare drum, honoring FZ posthumously, appeared with Chad Wackerman and teaches drumming academically.
Love your expressions! reminiscing - i actually still have an angel album and we liked it! until we saw FZ live at ODU Fieldhouse Norfolk VA late 70s and they played this with Terry doing his thing and Ike belting out as well!!!
you both are awesome - i have grandchildren that will probably watch you (well, my daughter wont let me make the introduction quite yet lol) God Bless you two - super special
i will join, as a patron. Cheat the hangman from double brothers , but the story goes back to to civil war. A southern that tries to protect his part of the nation - his wife waits and he never comes home. God Gives This Gift - We are the same. God Bless
Consider how talented the band is to even play this piece. I’d forgotten how intense the solo is! As for Terry, he’s a composer in his own right. He tours with his HUGE drum set which features a million drums tuned to play melodies.
Cool video, there's a version of this that has a horn section and an epic but short guitar solo on Zappa In New York. There's "lots of overdubs" as Frank put it on the album notes, but it does sound great.
I believe Bozzio still lives. I have heard of a few appearances he makes at music stores promoting equipment and encouraging and instructing younger drummers. I have also seen a few videos of him playing with other musicians and using an enormous drum kit, one that would be too much to move, set up and tear down every night, let alone play it.
Terry is alive and well and composes and plays all over the world. He lives in Japan these days. I saw him last at City Winery in Manhattan in like 2018. Sure it was fifty drummers and their one kid who wants to play drums too, and this bass player, but hey, for me it is the Zappa history. He has a tremendous kit that takes HOURS to set up. Chromatically tuned and everything. Makes Neil Peart look like Buddy Rich. Check him out on the Dweezil Zappa "Zappa Plays Zappa " DVD tour from 2006. You will not be disappointed.
Here’s a video of a solo on Terry’s standard kit : ua-cam.com/video/CroX237dzfY/v-deo.html And another performance on an all-cymbal kit (even the basses) ua-cam.com/video/v4P4luHdFwA/v-deo.html
I’m pretty sure Terry played this song with Dweezil at the Beacon theater in the beginning of Zappa plays Zappa. That show also had Steve Vai & Napoleon It was the best thing ever, other than when I saw Frank in ‘79-‘81
Always great to see you guys in such a good mood after a Zappa reaction. I think this is probably Terry’s greatest achievement! No matter the size of his drum set and suffistication of his playing on said sets, this is raw and energetic youth at its best!
The movie is called Baby Snakes, out in 1979 in the theaters (I remember watching the movie trailer on TV) and the show is from the Halloween in New York series at The Palladium in 1977. The album related to this movie is called Sheik Yerbouti, also out in 1979, however the live portions of the music are taken from The London Hammersmith Odeon in 1978. A lot of the music played on the movie Baby Snakes, specifically Punky's Whips, The Purple Lagoon and The Illinois Enema Bandit to name a few, have their original release on the also live album, Zappa In New York which is also taken from the Halloween At New York series of shows, also at The Palladium, this one from 1976. I think Frank made it a point to play the Halloween week in New York every year from 1976 till 1984.
Terry was a Human Octopus on the kit for Frank! So Fluid! ( Dare I say, more fluid than Jeff Beck? ( I know, different instruments, I could not help myself))I love every minute of live coverage of him!
I love Zappa AND Angel. Punky took it with great humour and Angel even wrote a song called Whips after this (never released by the band but appeared on an album by the band White Sister - another great band). I feel inspired to write a song about my feelings for Terry's wife Dale (of Missing Persons).
Terry still plays and has the biggest drum set with chromatic drums and many solo compositions. He sang back up when in Missing Persons also while playing.Really enjoyed y'all's presentation, thank you
I had the privilege of seeing Little Terry Ted play the Black Page with Dweezil's band from about 30 feet away. Dude is nothing but grace. It was like watching a ballet behind the biggest kit I have ever seen.
This was supposed to be released on "Live In New York" album, but apparently Warner Bros were worried about being sued, so withdrew the album (in the UK anyway!). They took this track off and some other references to Punky, then released it again. A few copies did get out to market and are highly sort after now. Frank did later release the album as intended. You need to look up that Punky Meadows publicity shot on the net! 😂😂
great choice patreon. So much energy skill and fun. Frank liked to write songs for certain individuals to "showcase" them and to be forever remembered. Think this is the case for this one with Terry
Terry is still around. He's a different animal today. Think the biggest set of drums in your life, arranged and tuned to octaves, playing different figures with each limb. Sometimes he gigs with Dweezil Zappa, and yes they still do Punky's Whips. Also check him out in Missing Persons.
This is a great piece of entertainment. It wasn't on the original vinyl double LP "Live in New York", but I was very happy when he decided to include it on the CD. Also, you reacted to Titties 'n' Beer from the same album. Terry played the devil, then. He is still considered one of the best drummers ever
Prime Zappa. Hands DOWN!! He is great with the rest, but this is the best. Halloween performances, 1977, Baby snakes epic. Palladium NY. Zappa in his all time prime.
Terry is the sweetest guy. When we did Thing-Fish the first time in 2001, we met him and he said to our drummer: "Wow, I don't want your job." He still didn't know what the f Thing-Fish was really about. But then, who does. Even Gail was vague about it.
Actually, I would recommend reacting to the whole album, but it's a real ordeal. Even hardcore Zappa fans are deeply divided about this. Anyway, here is what we made of it: ua-cam.com/video/7LjHYjLq_rM/v-deo.html
Yup, Bozzio still out there with his 64 piece drumkit (did sound for him twice during his clinics: 7 bass drum mics and 4 overheads) Here's footage from 13 years ago of him playing The Black Page with Dweezil Zappa's tribute band: ua-cam.com/video/aDQE82ElyJg/v-deo.html

I’m pretty sure Terry played this song with Dweezil at the Beacon theater in the beginning of Zappa plays Zappa. That show also had Steve Vai & Napoleon It was the best thing ever, other than when I saw Frank in ‘79-‘81
Definitely sounds like the best thing ever; thanks Fryboy!
Awesome clip! Zappa was so great and I am digging your channel because you have such knowledge behind your commentary
Thanks Matt, we appreciate you!
Yes it is the same show =)
Knew it! Thanks Andreas!
Ya'll are the best! Thanks for bringing the energy!
Thanks Slinky!
Endless supply of fantastic timeless melodies and high-brow humor from FZ, wow! LOL
Thank you very much. This is so exceptional.
Terry alive and well with very short hair!! Saw him in Toronto with Chad Wackerman and Marco Minerman. His drum kit is crazy impressive!
Nice, thanks Michael!
Always great to see you guys in such a good mood after a Zappa reaction. I think this is probably Terry’s greatest achievement! No matter the size of his drum set and suffistication of his playing on said sets, this is raw and energetic youth at its best!
We're gad you enjoyed TheUtke!
This vid is one of my zappa faves, bozio at his monstrous best and one of zappa’s fiercest solos
Very funny and musically complex. Classic Zappa!
Does anyone remember the song , Nobody walks in LA . That was Terry's band Missing Persons...
Sifa remembers the band, but no specific music because she was very young♥️
I guess that's Terry Bozzio - he's SOMETHING ELSE!! What a drummer!
This was awesome guys thank you!
Glad you enjoyed, thanks Sonic Art!
I used to listen to this at the gym back in early ninet
I also saw Terry Bozzio with UK opening up for Jethro Tull in about 1979 atFort Worth Texas.
Woah, we KNOW that was awesome!
Terry was a Human Octopus on the kit for Frank! So Fluid! ( Dare I say, more fluid than Jeff Beck? ( I know, different instruments, I could not help myself))I love every minute of live coverage of him!
More fluid than Neil Peart I think. It’s too bad Rush never did a cover of this song.
I love Zappa AND Angel. Punky took it with great humour and Angel even wrote a song called Whips after this (never released by the band but appeared on an album by the band White Sister - another great band). I feel inspired to write a song about my feelings for Terry's wife Dale (of Missing Persons).
Incomparable genius .
Terry still plays and has the biggest drum set with chromatic drums and many solo compositions. He sang back up when in Missing Persons also while playing.Really enjoyed y'all's presentation, thank you
Thanks Sorgi9, we appreciate you!
I had the privilege of seeing Little Terry Ted play the Black Page with Dweezil's band from about 30 feet away. Dude is nothing but grace. It was like watching a ballet behind the biggest kit I have ever seen.
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing Clifford!
Rumor has it that the rest of the band hated it but punky Meadows embraced it and actually got up on the stage with Frank and Terry one time
A brilliant jab at the music industries attempt at corporatism of hard rock music.
Omgsh Jim, we looked it up after filming the video and were in TEARS with laughter. The song was definitely needed😆!
Thank you Guys
♥️
great choice patreon. So much energy skill and fun. Frank liked to write songs for certain individuals to "showcase" them and to be forever remembered. Think this is the case for this one with Terry
haha, I didn't think about that, that reminds me of "Stevie's Spanking", the one about Steve Vai.
I think he did black napkins for Terry also.
Terry is still around. He's a different animal today. Think the biggest set of drums in your life, arranged and tuned to octaves, playing different figures with each limb. Sometimes he gigs with Dweezil Zappa, and yes they still do Punky's Whips. Also check him out in Missing Persons.
Thanks I. F. !
A great Zappa song. Even Punky thought it was funny.
☺️That’s so cool of him!
Bozzio was my favorite drummer of Frank's lineup.
To this day Terry is the only drummer to kiss his drumsticks while playing.😅
Yep ! I'm having this at my funeral !
Bonkers track, absolutely mental.
Zappa's 1977 Halloween concert at New York City's Palladium Theater
This is a great piece of entertainment. It wasn't on the original vinyl double LP "Live in New York", but I was very happy when he decided to include it on the CD. Also, you reacted to Titties 'n' Beer from the same album. Terry played the devil, then. He is still considered one of the best drummers ever
Obviously, back then I always thought of the drummer from the Muppet Show
Missing Persons. With Terry , Dale and Vinny . 80s band.
Wasn't Warren cucarello on guitar?
I forgot how entertaining this was
Great video. Loved it.
Thanks Tom!
your patrion is a hero
All the footage is taken from the same set of shows and then made into a movie called Baby Snakes.
Thanks David!
Zappa cracked the code. There isn't anything musically he couldn't do.
And I thought it was only me who thought about Punky Meadows that way
FRANK ZAPPA IS THE BEST!!
Terry fokkin' teared that up!
Prime Zappa. Hands DOWN!! He is great with the rest, but this is the best.
Halloween performances, 1977, Baby snakes epic. Palladium NY. Zappa in his all time prime.
Wow! Never seen this, wild indeed!
"I ain't really queer, but if he ever got near, Steven Tyler would pay to see" Incredible
Adrian Belew on exquisite dance moves
😆
Adrian Belew in a dress is priceless
Terry is the sweetest guy. When we did Thing-Fish the first time in 2001, we met him and he said to our drummer: "Wow, I don't want your job." He still didn't know what the f Thing-Fish was really about. But then, who does. Even Gail was vague about it.
Actually, I would recommend reacting to the whole album, but it's a real ordeal. Even hardcore Zappa fans are deeply divided about this.
Anyway, here is what we made of it:

Thanks Tommi!
Check out Zappa's drummer video
Yup, Bozzio still out there with his 64 piece drumkit (did sound for him twice during his clinics: 7 bass drum mics and 4 overheads) Here's footage from 13 years ago of him playing The Black Page with Dweezil Zappa's tribute band: ua-cam.com/video/aDQE82ElyJg/v-deo.html
How cool! Thanks Leon!
TB splits his time living in California and in Japan (his wife is Japanese). Go catch his drum channel work! No touring due to today’s circumstances..
Thanks Diana!
