In all interviews I have seen it is clear that Mathieu and David van der Poel do feel Dutch. While their remarks vary a bit here and there, David said that they both do not feel a lot of connection to Belgium. Later he said that they always train in The Netherlands and that he really felt home among Dutch in the Dutch team. Mathieu this year said that winning Amstel Gold in 2019 was something he won't forget, that it was special and the reason was that he won it in the only classic in NL and in the Dutch National Jersey. That clearly shows the affinity he has with NL. To me it does not matter, I am a huge fan of Wout too and Tadej and also Julian. Nationality is not important. But they do not feel Belgian.
Then when MvdP cannot become second, it is clear something was wrong with him on the day. I think WvA had a fantastic day and MvdP a very bad day. Tires: a year prior despite 4 flat tires MvdP was always close to WvA and before the second or third flat one he constantly drove way from Wout van Aert. Which is why he was in tears because he was indeed clearly the strongest. This year it had nothing to do with tires as Wout was clearly the better and MvdP had no problems with it either. Wout according to him was much better them him so MvdP felt he lost to a much better competitor and had no problems with it.
