  • Alexander Lippisch: The Pioneer of Delta Wings and Supersonic Flight | PART 1.
An upscaled and colorized documentary with lectures from the iconic aviation innovator.
A Visionary Ahead of His Time
Alexander Lippisch, a German aerodynamicist born in 1894, is a pivotal figure in aviation history. His groundbreaking work on delta wings and tailless aircraft designs revolutionized aircraft design and laid the foundation for modern supersonic flight. This video delves into the life and contributions of this extraordinary engineer, exploring his innovative concepts, challenges, and enduring legacy.
    Early Life and Influences
Lippisch's fascination with flight began in his youth, inspired by the Wright brothers' pioneering achievements. He pursued his passion by studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, where he also had the opportunity to work at the Zeppelin airship factory. This experience sparked his interest in aerodynamics and set him on the path to becoming a leading figure in aviation.
The Birth of the Delta Wing
In the 1920s, Lippisch began exploring unconventional aircraft designs, focusing on tailless aircraft and the potential of the delta wing. He believed that this radical wing shape, with its inherent stability and low drag, held the key to achieving higher speeds and greater efficiency. His early experiments with gliders, such as the Lippisch Storch and the Ente, demonstrated the feasibility of his ideas and paved the way for more ambitious projects.
    The Revolutionary Me 163 Komet
Lippisch's most famous creation, the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, was a rocket-powered interceptor aircraft developed during World War II. This revolutionary aircraft, with its distinctive delta wing and tailless configuration, was the first and only rocket-powered fighter to see operational service. The Komet's exceptional speed and climb rate made it a formidable weapon, capable of intercepting Allied bombers with unprecedented effectiveness.
    Challenges and Controversies
Despite its technical brilliance, the Me 163 Komet faced numerous challenges. Its volatile rocket fuel and limited range posed significant operational constraints. Moreover, the Komet's high speed and unconventional handling characteristics made it a demanding aircraft to fly, resulting in several accidents and fatalities. Despite these setbacks, the Komet's revolutionary design proved the potential of Lippisch's ideas and inspired further research into delta wings and supersonic flight.
    Post-War Contributions and Legacy
After the war, Lippisch's expertise was sought after by both the United States and the Soviet Union. He eventually settled in the United States, where he continued his research on delta wings and supersonic aircraft. His work at the Convair Corporation contributed to the development of the XF-92, an experimental delta-wing aircraft that served as a precursor to the iconic F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart interceptors.

Mr. Lippisch was the father of the delta wing, and a pioneer of high-speed flight. He was the first to pass the 1000Km/h “limit“. It is fascinating to see his demonstrations on real world physics, not by means of simulations, something we do not see so often in the net. Many thanks for this post-production in color!

The opportunity to listen to one of the minds that contributed to getting to where we are is in itself priceless. That these guys did this with no computers, just thinking and experimenting, incredible.

I love his accent! Too bad they don’t teach this in German schools anymore… Apart from that - great video, a true historical document.
