When I was little, my parents made me watch this every night because they thought the music would bore me to sleep. Sadly for them, it just made Fantasia my favorite Disney movie and fall in love with classical music.

    • @veggiesaremurder
      @veggiesaremurder 11 місяців тому +3

Bore you to sleep, or LULL you to sleep? Because this is also my favorite Disney movie (hey!), and the images dancing through my head because of this movie made my anxiety just melt away. The world with the centaurs and pegasus's, especially, was my image of what heaven was like for YEARS after this came out. I'm in my 30s so was raised by Baby Boomers, so I might be older than you, I don't know. But when we were kids, we learned to use boredom in the way it's supposed to be used. You get hungry when your body is asking for food, tired when you need sleep, etc. With boredom, your brain needs to work. It needs to imagine, create, problem-solve, or just dream. All different feelings can derive once you've acted on the boredom and are doing the things your body wants you to do, but one of them is relaxation through envisioning something beautiful or calming. The music and visuals in this movie create these and all sorts of things for me, even when it's not playing! I'm so glad I didn't have my early development messed with by filling every moment where my brain was begging for dreams and creativity, with devices that created my entertainment FOR me. I feel very blessed, and simultaneously extremely sad for younger people who have never had any significant enough time alone to where they've enjoyed thinking, dreaming, imagining, coming up with ideas, and then creating those ideas.

@@kittycatmeowmeow963 the age thing wasn't meant as a put-down or anything. Not even remotely. I was just trying to engage in a discussion with you about how I felt while watching it, whether you were sure they meant to bore or to lull you to sleep, and on how boredom motivates us.

Something I find so interesting in the dinosaur one, is that this movie was made before the theory about a meteor causing their extinction came about. That's why they're depicted as dying in some sort of heat wave/drought.

Full-on adults now, have the patience of children. It's because of cell phones. An entire generation with brains that have no tolerance for a single second of boredom, or even slight, momentary distraction. It actually makes me sad. Anyway, I had no idea there was this cultural thing about 'Fantasia', where people prop it up now as a bastion of sophistication (like they do with jazz music), but don't actually like it! Because I've always thought I was alone growing up in that this was, and still is, genuinely, my favorite Disney movie. I thought the worlds of the fairies and how they make dew drops, change colors, and freeze ponds, and the Greek Gods were so magical, that I used to seriously "fantasize" (ayo!) about living there. It wasn't something I'd talk about with anyone unless they were close enough to come over and kick it in my room. It was something I'd have on hand to put on in my room while I was writing or whatever. This and Alice and Wonderland are my favorites, because I just can't stop thinking about what it would be like to live in these worlds where everything is gorgeous. Sliding down rainbows?! Talking, dancing, mushrooms and flowers? Come. On. It was my image of heaven for most of my life. Sign me the f-up!

According to John Culhane's 1983 book Walt Disney's Fantasia, the night dancers are supposed to be alligators. In addition, Disney wanted the humor in the Dance of the Hours to flow from the interactions of the characters, rather than being phoned-in gags. That's why the animals dance like real ballerinas, but look so ungainly. The humor comes from the fact that animals are dancing like real ballerinas and it goes about as well as you would think.

A little extra note for the animator's posing, which I'm sure you'll find funny.
Originally disney hired Bela Lugosi, famous as the actor for Dracula, to do the poses for Satan/Chernabog. But when Lugosi did his parts, the animator didn't find them satisfactory. Ultimately, Lugosi got annoyed and asked "alright, how would YOU do it?!" Cue the photos that would wind up as the main images for Disney's most metal villain

Ben's always dropping such great fun facts, so I've got one for YOU. In "Rite of Spring", the fight between the T-Rex and the stegosaurus is a bit of a science snafu. Stegosaurus lived during the Jurassic period. T-Rex didn't appear until the late cretaceous period---two periods of time separated by millions of years. So not only should these two not be fighting, they shouldn't even EXIST together. We humans are closer in time to the t-rex than the stegosaurus. Also, it wasn't until "Jurassic Park" that we finally saw the T-rex walking and running correctly with its body more hunched over and its tail up in the air. The T-rex depicted here should NOT be walking so upright with its tail dragging on the ground. (Basically, anytime in media you see dinosaurs dragging their tails 'Flintstones' style, that's a big 'no'.)
None the less, "Rite of Spring" is still mostly accurate to what prehistory was like, and was regularly shown in schools as part of their science classes (including mine). I know my comment is rather late to the party here, but I only just discovered this channel, and I love the energetic attitude you both bring, your theater talents, the funny banter, and the historical fun facts! Keep up the awesome work!

Fantasia is in my top favourite Disney animated films of all time. I love all of this film. It may be a bit of a slow burn but that’s the point of the whole of Fantasia; not only exciting and engaging viewers but also not being afraid to slow down and allow itself to stay with things until it’s time to move on to the next thing.
Also, love that Fantasia hoodie! I need myself some more Disney merch. 😄

The asteroid was over 100 miles wide and completely vaporized on contact. The massive amounts of soot and debris ejected following the impact caused global cooling, drought and limited cessation of photosynthesis in oceans. So you're right, there was a drought. Some dinosaurs survived though- all birds are dinosaurs.

I wish that you could have watched the original FANTASIA instead of this re-edited version. Deems Taylor, the man in the tuxedo, was a very popular music critic back in the 1930s. In this version that you are watching, another man dubbed over Mr. Taylor's voice and they added in about 6 minutes of extra dialogue. Along with the problems of having to install the stereo equipment in the theaters, which was expensive, two other things occurred to make the movie a failure on its first release. 1. Music critics attacked the film by saying, "How dare Disney tell us how to envision music!" and 2. WWII broke out and many people were not in a movie going mood. The racist images of the black centaurettes were removed sometime in the late 1950s. I first saw the movie when it was re-released in the 1960s to take advantage of the hippie movement and drug culture. Disney came out with a psychedelic poster saying "FANTASIA-The Ultimate Experience!" By the way, The Sorcerer's Apprentice was the first time that Mickey had eyeballs instead of just black dots. Walt knew that this was going to be a great acting role for the mouse and wanted his face to be more expressive. Animator, Fred Moore, was responsible for Mickey's newer look.

    4:28 Absolutely.
4:32 With that many musicians playing layers upon layers of different parts for a song like this? Absolutely not. The conductor is important because he unifies the entire orchestra. Without him, the musicians can start straying off and losing the sense of the tempo, the mood, when and where they must become quieter or louder, faster or slower, when and where to hold or end each note, and so many other important details.
Edit: So, I spoke to my mother, who majored in music and served as a music teacher for many years, and we had a conversation about whether an orchestra of this scale could possibly perform without a conductor, and turns out the answer is yes!
In such cases, she says, it is possible among an orchestra full of elite professionals, people that have been playing such pieces for many years and know the ins and outs of these songs.
And it turns out, sometimes some conductors are brought in because they are famous, and sometimes they are less a conductor and more just an inflated bag of ego that may not always know the song they are hired to conduct as well as they should.
In such cases, the orchestra will have to manage on their own and listen to one another in order to survive while the conductor flexes his ego and misses important cues in the song he’s supposed to be instructing.
Lastly, in the case of when the conductor is not present, turns out there is someone who can fill in, especially while the orchestra tunes their instruments and does warm ups. They’re called “The First Violinist”. Should all else fail, it is the First Violinist’s job to lead the rest of the orchestra by example and ear. Whatever they’re playing, everyone else will play based on the First Violinist.

When I was young, Tocatta and Fugue was maybe a skip track. These days, it might be my very favorite, as I really appreciate its pure abstractness.
This was the "special restored edition" which had restored the original interstitial narrations by the host Deems Taylor. Honestly, they just fill up time by describing what you're about to see, and they're totally unnecessary. The movie was better off without them, the abridged versions were featured in the theatrical (and VHS/DVD) releases since the late 1940s or so.
