Dual boot Ubuntu and Windows on a dell laptop | Turn off RST

- Ubuntu 20.04 installation on a flash drive for dual boot.
Dell SATA RAID firmware Linux AHCI
During installation I got "Turn off RST" message.
The problem was the SATA operation in the bios settings - Windows uses Raid on, Linux uses AHCI.
Luckily we can run Windows while using AHCI!
Amazing! I've been spending two weeks searching for a solution for this problem (forums, videos, articles,...), nothing worked, and this guy solved my problem within 10 minutes! I have no ways to say thank you! Great work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, glad it helped!
Thank you so much! I was almost giving up on dual boot

Perfect guide.
I carried this out on my Laptop which is an Acer (with Windows 10 Home pre-installed). I installed Ubuntu to disk (turning off RST in Bios - I had to press Ctrl+S in Bios for the option to switch to AHCI, and back again to RST, and then back again to AHCI).
Great video - follow the instructions.
I took me days to find out about this "Ctrl+s" secret in my Acer!!!!!!!
Hey i have an acer aspire 7 and also faced the same problem now one question to you is have you dual booted the pc and have you installed os on external or internall drive?
Thank you so much! You illustrated perfectly the whole process. It worked!
That's great to hear :-)
Thanks for the feedback!
Man! You're my hero!
I mean, you are using the exactly same PC model as mine. Only difference here is that I'm installing the Mint distribution, but everything else is the same
Thank you my friend, greetings from Brazil!

I'm a complete beginner to programming, linux and that kind of stuff, I have an inspiron 7501, and I have been trying to install linux on my system for the last two days, saw a bunch of videos that only confused me....This video helped me finally install linux and was overall just very easy to understand and follow.
Overall, wonderful work!👏👏

Thank you so much. I didn't have the confidence to follow instructions on stack over flow but your tutorial really helped me and I dual booted my machine!
You're very welcome!
Nice work. For a while there I was thinking I would have to dump windows altogether, or run windows from a virtual machine within Ubuntu. Now have a functional dual boot thanks to your video. Many thanks!
I am going to do that.
VM might be more stable LOL. My fairly new Windows 11 install is kicking the fans on my XPS15 off the charts and Task Manager doesn't show much cpu. Clean install on Mint 21 and running silent and cool!
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!!!! I've tried a few different ways until I finally found your video! Now everything works, you saved my day!

You're a genius friend! I was looking for the solution to the problem and many suggested changing the windows regedit settings. You were the only one who explained it precisely and simply. Great work. Keep it up!

This is the best video for dual booting on Dell laptops. I was stuck on RST error for two days watching random videos but this 10min video was more than enough for solving my problem. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤.

Really useful . Worked for my XPS 17 as well, since they have moved to a new BIOS UI unlike XPS 15 . I couldn’t find any video specific to XPS 17. So to those with XPS 17, it worked for me. Thanks again. I owe all my SW knowledge to the internet. OpenSource FTW
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing about XPS 17!
On the last step but it take much time saying saving installed packages....
I have Alienware m16 r2 . I tried installing Ubuntu 20.04 but my mousepad and graphics drivers are not recognised. Any solution
The best explanation ever... even I (brazilian guy) could understand and fix it

My dell precision 5510 gets stuck on a black screen not even giving me an option to go to bios and i have to remove cmos battery everytime its changed to ahci. Any idea why?
Thanks for the help 🙂.
I followed each and every step mentioned in the video and successfully installed the Ubuntu without any data loss in windows.
And this is my first time dual booting windows and Linux.
I am so glad you found this helpful
I haven't done the installation yet. I'm wondering if windows will start spontaneously if the ubuntu flash drive is not inserted. Or ddoes the flash drive need to be present to get back to windows. Or if the flash drive is not inserted, is it necessary to switch back out of ACHI?
Thanks to your insightful UA-cam tutorial, I successfully configured a dual-boot setup on my Dell laptop by disabling RST. Your expertise made the process seamless, and I appreciate the valuable tech guidance!"
Thank you for your feedback!👍
Do you if It work for Windows 11 Also?

Ahm i know how to change Intel RST to SATA in my Acer Nitro 5 Laptop but the process of Windows Safe boot going to work too for me i dont going to lose Windows?
I have Dualboot (Linux + Win10) in my HDD and i will add SSD with linux inside. When i install linux on SSD, I got a message to Turn Off RST. I will try like in the video but does the bootloader have to be on the HDD? Or make the bootloader to SSD?
Not working =/
After change to normal initialization on safe mode and press restart, it goes to blue screen error. Any idea how to solve it?

Hi, I'm a new subscriber. so glad I found this channel, thank you for the good work.
Also, I have a question. Instead of changing the boot setting straight away, can we change the windows registry first and then change the boot system configuration later? wouldn't that be more straightforward?
Thank you very much!
About the order you do things, it doesn't really matter, as long as the first time you start Windows after switching over to AHCI, you'll be in safe boot mode, so your way of thinking makes absolute sense.
Great video. One issue with my machine is that windows will not boot using grub. I have to press f12 to boot windows. Have you seen that issue?

I am trying to install Ubuntu on Dell optiplex 990. The installation hose smooth but dual boot option dosenot come on screen shot after sitting off system. I do have selected AHCI Option before installing Ubuntu.
im currently stuck on getting the time from a network time server, any fixes?
Hi! Ur tutorial was really a life and time saver but my mind is confused with few questions could u please answer.
1. I have windows installed in NVME m.2, as now we run this on AHCI mode, what are the consequences it can see by this setting. I saw that u also have the nvme m.2 drive
2. Will there be any perfomance drop?
3. RAID is basically used for multiple drives then why RAID was already ON by default on BIOS.
PLEASE, someone clear the air out of it
After 2 days of trying none stop this worked for me. Thanks a lot man.
Glad I could help
After several tutorials and attempts I got it!! Thanks so much
Thanks for the great and clear tutorial!
I went through every single step the same way (except I installed Ubuntu on my internal hard drive on its own partition instead of a USB stick). Windows runs fine in AHCI mode and Ubuntu also booted the first time just like in your video. However, since the second attempt to boot Ubuntu from the GRUB menu, I get the following error message:
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: unkown error 0
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: UCSI_GET_PODS failed (-5)
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: con3: failed to register alternate modes
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: PPM init failed (-110)
Then the laptop gets hung up and has to be rebooted.
Only under "advanced options for Ubuntu" and then "Ubuntu, with Linux 5.8.0-53-generic (recovery mode)" lets me start Ubuntu from the GRUB menu then.
Do you happen to know how to fix this error? My laptop (XPS 15 9500) is brand new so apart from system updates nothing has been changed to the initial state until setting up Ubuntu.
I never saw this error… one thing I would try though, is, once you log into ubuntu, make sure you’re up to date (sudo apt update) then try running:
sudo update-grub
Don’t know if it will solve it but definitely worth a shot.
@@absprog Thanks for your super quick reply! Unfortunately, I still had the same problem afterwards. :(
This seems to be a typical NVIDIA graphics card problem, but it can be solved by installing the NVIDIA driver (which is not installed automatically) under "additional drivers" within the system settings. Now everything works fine again.
Thanks a million for your great video and your great support!
@@juliawenzel705 So you succeeded to log into Ubuntu from the "advanced options" in the grub menu? Then started recovery mode, and in this recovery mode installed the nVidia driver?

Hi, I have a question regarding the bios of the Dell Inspiron 7700 AIO computer, how would its configuration be to reinstall a windows only. I've been trying for days and I can't appreciate your knowledge.
Why not delete the Linux partitions and extend the Windows partition to use the free space? You can do it all from the Windows disk management utility
Thank you brother, i did all the steps but when i click on usb, partition 1, only ubuntu is wrotten but the page of install ubuntu doesn't be shown seems like blocked on dell and ubuntu first page.
Hello, the second key on which you install Ubuntu must be formatted? NTFS or extFat? Thank you for your reply.
I don't think it's needed or will make any difference. In any case you override everything on this flash drive and create new partitions on it with their own file systems. As long as the installer sees the disk you want to use as destination, you should be OK.
@@absprog Thank you very much for your response, and thank you again for this great video.
@@absprog Awesome ! I succeeded in installing despite the BootLocker which gave me some problems but in the end. Thanks to you it worked! Thank you so much !

What did you do with BitLocker? Did you turn it off in Windows?
@@absprog No, I have not deactivated it and it is a real problem because periodically I am forced to unlock my hdd
Similar things happened to me on the HP, you have to disable dump protection, boot protection, activate legacy, verify that SATA was not with a Rapid Storage system, verify Bitlocker.
Check if the partitions are MBR or GPT.
All these steps are extremely important haha otherwise you will have a lot of headaches
At first, Should I have to make partition in window 10 then ubuntu install??
I used an external flash drive for the Ubuntu installation in this video, but if you want to install it on the internal disk alongside Windows then yes, you will have to free up some disk space. You don’t actually have to create the new partition though, just make sure there is free space. The Linux installer can use this space to create the new partition
Thanks

Hey I had a question that if I am trying to remove Ubuntu then do I need to turn secure boot on? And change from AHCI to RAID?
What should be the correct way to remove Ubuntu from a Dell Laptop can you let me know in short please?
I don't wanna mess up my system
Here's the course of action that I think
1. Change boot order to make windows at top
2. Go to disk management in windows and format the ubuntu partition
3. Merge that unallocated space with my other drive
Is this the right way or do I need to do something else?
Absolute MVP
You are AWESOME!
Wow that is a really nice thing to say!🤗
How to install Ubuntu side by side, after turning off RST, if I am not using a pendrive but installing it in my internal hard drive ( C drive in Windows) itself?
You need to free up some space on your hard drive, then use the free space to install Linux. Take a look here:
ua-cam.com/video/YTyAeoYNrNY/v-deo.html
It's about Pop OS, but the way you free up the space is the same.

Hi, I use DELL G3 3579 and after following your tutorial, after I change the SATA operation to AHCI and not checking the Secure Boot Enable, my USB drive still doesn't show up in UEFI BOOT option. Do you have any idea why? Thank you in advance
The USB drive not showing up has nothing to do with the SATA configuration.
Try to unplug it then plug it in again, then restart the computer. If the USB drive is bootable, it should be on the list.

Hi . My laptop is Dell Vostro 3578 . I currently use window 11 and have just install Ubuntu parallel ( from another partition of hard drive , no USB ). In SATA Operation in my laptop just has 2 option : AHCI and Disable , hasn’t RAID . And boot dual normally . So , after install Ubuntu , i don’t need to do the steps at the end according to your video , right ?
Your best bet is to start Ubuntu in a live session. If the disk is visible (which you check with gparted / gnome-disks-utility / lsblk /fdisk) you're good to go.
@@absprog I don't get what you mean, but if I leave it like that, will it matter in the long run? There is a point when starting the laptop , there is a line saying "Boot insecure mode" then go to the step of choosing OS
There are no long run consequences here. It either works or it doesn’t. I didn’t really understand if you got it to work. And what do you mean by “the steps at the end?” Which steps?
@@absprog Oh sorry for confusing wording . I mean I don't need to do the steps from 6:51 since my machine is dual booting normally without RAID mode, right? ( There's really no RAID mode on my machine , only 2 modes are Disable and AHCI )
And it was working properly when only in AHCI mode for both Win and Ubuntu .
Clean video and it's working. Thank you so much.
i am new to this
i wanted to ask so do we have to plugin the usb flash drive everytime we open ubuntu ?
also does it work if i use a sd card to do the same ?
and how much storage capacity should it have ?
The installation media is only going to be used when installing. If you installed Linux itself on a usb flash drive, then yes, you’re going to need it whenever you want to use Linux.
On the other hand, If you installed on your internal SSD, you won’t need a second flash drive.
As for the size - at least 8 GB for the installation media, at least 64GB for Linux installation.
You can definitely use an SD card, it will do the job just as well.
Amazing! Just amazing! Thank you.
Dear Sir, thank you very much for your tutorial.
I need a little assistance, please. I've followed all the steps of your video. After the installation was complete, I was able to launch Ubuntu. Then I launched Windows.
But then, when I try to launch Ubuntu again, it does not work. (I get a black screen with a lot of lines, and the last line says "(initramfs) with the possibility to enter commands)
My boot option are #1 Ubuntu and #2 Windows Boot Manager.
For some reason, I can't select USB as boot option, maybe this is why I get this problem ?

Hi Thanks a lot for this video.I have only one problem when disabling the security boot and the problem is the Bitlocker preventing to boot the machine unless I enter some recovery code.Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with the Bitlocker problem?
Yes, I ran into it before. Some computers come with Bitlocker installed and activated by default. What I suggest doing is deactivating it. To do that, you'll have to turn secure boot back on, log into windows then look for "bitlocker" in Windows start menu. From there you can turn its encryption off, and everything should be okay from there.
By the way, you might not even have a choice if you intend to install Linux and Windows on the same disk. I remember vaguely that I had a Linux installation failing to install on a disk that contained a copy of Windows with Bitlocker. But it was quite long ago, and I don't remember if it was Ubuntu...
How to create SanDisk partition 1 I didn't have this option.
