    • A Better Way to Splice...
    Original: This is a quick tool I made to splice filament with household tools. Works great for making multi-color prints, or just splicing on a little more filament to finish a print.

    This was exactly the kind of splicing tool I was hoping to find. Nice and simple.

    Thanks man you just saved a print for me I started it off thinking I would get most of it printed "simple box so didn't care how much as long as I got the sides up some" anyhow it was still working on the bottom and was on the last wind of filament so did an oh crap and bing search brought up your video got the jist did the candle thing and just used some pliers and side cutter at first not great. Grabbed a needle nose out of toolbox put it in vice tried to grind a dimple with diamond bit so I could drill no luck really. Pulled it out found another diamond drummel bit that looked about the perfect size same as the #50 drill so then held the pliers in my hand and worked it back and forth inside creating a grove once grove on one side I slowly clamped down the other while sliding it back and forth creating a channel between the 2 sides. At this point I was about out of time there was only about a foot of filament left and it was just starting to print the sides of the box which was in vase mode so it was speeding up. I hurried up and clamped my splice a few times and cleaned it with side cutters still had a little rough spot but with an inch left I had to let it go and hope for the best. It went through with no issue and I checked I didn't even have the grove fully made so I probably actually clamped the splice a bit tighter than 1.75 which is good I think. I got the splice going through the boden tube and printing on video will prob post it in next few days, showing the tool I made etc. Would not have happened without your video though I will credit you thanks again.

    Good video. You have to clamp the aluminum pieces and use some kind of cutting oil so the aluminum doesn't adhere to your bit and bind it in the hole, snapping the drill bit off.

    Thank you. I usually have a lot of Filament that I throw out. Need a good way to fuse this stuff.

    I recommend sanding the sides with very high grit sand paper (500-600)

    Great simple tool. Question: why not put it in the vise and put the filament in on either end and heat the metal?

    Hey man I like this. 👍🏻 A lot of people just fork-out the dough for fancy tools 🔧 when there are other ways.
    My only gripe is that you use dark age terminology with I do not understand 🤨 Like what is a 50 drill bit 🤔

      @keepitsimpleideaguy8676  Рік тому +2

      Lol the number 50 drill bit is the closest I have to 1.75mm ( the diameter of the filament). In addition to fractional drill sizes, there are also number drills and letter drills. They are used frequently in industry, they offer many sizes of bit varying by only a thousandth of an inch or two between letters and numbers

      That’s not dark age terminology… literally a size identifier and he even showed you at the end.

    This is neither fast nor easy and results in a weak bond. You need to cut them at an angle before joining.

      The extruder doesn't care, I've done jankier ways of this and it would work smoothly.
      Make a video showing a better way if you're so fucking smart. We would genuinely like to see it if you have an easier, faster, and better way to do it.

      @@kikook222 i go even more ghetto and just hit two pieces with a lighter and smash em up. my prusa mini eats it like a champ lol. this is a lot nicer than what i put through it
