I have to say. I haven’t picked up my bass in 15 years or so because I just didn’t feel it anymore. But I came across your UA-cam page and I have to say that spark seems to be coming back. I never thought it would but here it is. Thank you for that and please keep up the good work.
You should see his his website. Tons of video classes from different instructors. Not just Scott. Over 30K subscribers in his website. It's nothing but Bass.
I am a bass player, and studied your Dad's (Jaco's) technique . Felix you are so good! What a great tribute to your Father.I wish I was playing more. But the pandemic still slows things down. All the best to you, and to your entire family.
For anyone struggling with this technic, try descending every shape and scale you know. Every time you do it, start with a different finger. You want to get to the point where you don't have to think about it anymore.
It's one thing to "know" something, but a completely different thing to "teach" it to others. And Scott Devine does it masterfully. He is really really talented at getting his message across, better than anyone else I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you for the videos, God bless you Scott.
Blazing fast, the ultimate bass trick, the fantabulous and definitive bass technic, fast as light arpeggios, master the bass as a Pro in under a nanosecond....... :-D MAN YOU'RE GREAT!!!!!! Half of the videos is cabaret, but.... that's also the reason why I follow you! 5 Stars ;-D
Now you tell me that I did it wrong all my life 😣 I do that exact technique but its middle index middle middle index middle middle. One thing is for sure mate. You are by far the best teacher out there. Really love watching yer vids even though I play upright mainly. Love yer guts!
I just wanna say that you Scott had a lesson basically saying stay away from economy picking. The lesson involved playing C major scale arpeggios up and down. I’m almost positive you stated that alternate picking slows you down, and to always alternate
I saw your original video which used alternate ascending and raking descending on the Cmaj scale with one-note turn-arounds on both ends. That really cleared things up and I've incorporated that into all my playing (and it's helped a ton). WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS? I cannot see any difference between the technique in the two videos except the presentation.
The Hadrien Feraud clip--it looks like he's just alternating his fingers (leading with his middle finger) on that ascending chromatic lick. Still a great video, Scott!
nice fretless and playing, great settings and sound! round wounds? love playing this base and the GWB1. Great idea! the (aware) switching opens up worlds of new rhythmic patterns.
I saw this technique first time in 1997 in a recording session in Los Angeles with bassist extraordinaire IGOR SAAVEDRA doing it UP and DOWN , he always mentioned FRANK GAMBALE as his inspiration in developing this technique. He was blazing fast. He recorded a version of THE FLIGHT OF BUMBLEBEE for bass.
It is amazing while watching your videos. It's like being right in front of you having a conversation. It is almost like having personal bass classes. But for free :D
The chilean fusion bassist Igor Saavedra has develop a technique in his right hand for "economy picking", UP and DOWN the strings of the bass (very usefull for 6 or more strings basses), BEFORE Damian Erskine, Dominique di Piazza, Adrien Feraud, Felix Pastorius... since 1993 or before. Check that! (sorry for my english, saludos cordiales.)
I can do this racking technique with both fingers and play very fast while descending. But I can't keep the same speed when ascending and rhis kills me :(. How can we train the ascending picking to become as fast? Man you play so well and make it seem so easy...
So much great content! I started as a guitar player but the way I obsess over bass is a clear sign to me that perhaps I missed my calling, lol. Can't wait to get a bass and start applying all the knowledge soon!
I was having difficulty doing this because I kept alternating between my index leading and my ring finger leading on the A. I use my ring finger to jump to lower notes from higher strings on descents, so I’ve got to rework this a bit, but it should be fun. I also up-pick with my index finger on occasion (just sort of happens without thinking about it), so I’m going to see where that fits in. Fun little spark here!
Hey Scott ! You forgot to mention another amazing bass player beside Anthony Jackson, Felix Pastorius ,Richard Bona and Hadrien Féraud : Scott Devine !!!
Me too, and I recently realised that on 3 note per string scales I use three fingers when going up, economy when going down, and a one-finger or three-finger sweep for fast arpeggios.
Ska-dap. Bap-bap-ba. "You gotta put it in the pot if you want it to cook." Oops. Sorry. All that awesome bass playing transported me to another dimension.
Oh shit I didn't even know that was a technique haha. I've been doing that since I started, maybe not as good as these AWESOME people though! Great video Scott, appreciate your content allot, it's really helped me switch my mindset from guitar player to bass player when i need too!
Yo ! what could be the same exercice with Garry Willis right hand technique ? i'm studying this technique since 2 years now and I'm really starting to feel it. But I must say I racking with my index finger most of the time ... Peace, Love and BASS ! Flip
hey Scott I use a 3 finger techniche and been using it for many years now. Should I abandon my technique or should I just incorpore this one to the catalog??
Yo Scott! I got to the shed immediately after this vid! I'm an SBL-academy member and I know there's a bunch of more in depth courses in the library and that you're hella busy but, SHOULD you find the time to write down the tabs of that incredible lick starting at 2:32 I would appreciate it a ton! Sounded so amazing, and it seems like you use a different pattern of the raking technique. Would be fun to incorporate it into my practice ^^ (thumb this comment up a bunch if anyone agrees)
"Now when you hit that top note, on the g-string. If you follow the correct fingering" I'm dead that's funny as hell LOL!!! Sorry bout the joke lol love your vids!
Scott, I use free stroke primarily but I’m working on raking now. When you made the change did you have to raise your action? I’m getting a lot of banging and noise when I rake. Lighter touch?
Hi Scott, great little video - as usual!! Can you tell me how you seem to get such a great fretless sound - like - I have the same bass and would love to know the strings you used here?? The sound a little lighter than the usual 45-130 Thanks mate! -M
Hey I have this same bass and have experimented a bit with setup and strings. To get this sound, I believe Scott is using roundwound strings and lower action to get that nice buzzy fretless sound. For myself, I opted for flatwound strings, I love the buttery smooth upright-like sound. But this roundwound sound is more similar to the growly Gary Willis sound! *Edit - just realized this is 5y old and hope you figured it out man 😂
Virtuoz Ed yeah I feel like it's a well priced instrument, it will probably come with a pretty low action though so might need some setup depending on what your preferences are ^^ there's tons of other options ofcourse so I would look into those as well if I were you (for example the sire marcus miller 5string fretless basses)
Scott takes time to honor so many hallmark bassists, never credits himself while he is Hall of Fame worthy. Such a fabulous musician. Thank you Scott!
I have to say. I haven’t picked up my bass in 15 years or so because I just didn’t feel it anymore. But I came across your UA-cam page and I have to say that spark seems to be coming back. I never thought it would but here it is. Thank you for that and please keep up the good work.
and please keep up your interest in playing your bass again.
Thats a beautiful thing Scott is the man.
You should see his his website. Tons of video classes from different instructors. Not just Scott. Over 30K subscribers in his website. It's nothing but Bass.
So how’d it go? Your comment was 3yrs ago:: You still picking that bass up regularly?
Luckily for me, the bass is also very good at being slow, heavy and laidback👍😀
Thank you so much for presenting me to Felix Pastorius. I've missed out so far. What a monster
I am a bass player, and studied your Dad's (Jaco's) technique . Felix you are so good! What a great tribute to your Father.I wish I was playing more. But the pandemic still slows things down. All the best to you, and to your entire family.
how did pandemic slow your practice down? dont get it
Really like how you explained the technique. Not rushed, and kept it simplified. Excellent video cut backs to the studio players.
For anyone struggling with this technic, try descending every shape and scale you know. Every time you do it, start with a different finger. You want to get to the point where you don't have to think about it anymore.
4:29 camera slowly zooms in
*instruction intensifies*
Yeah, subtle fun! Lol:)
I thought the same haha
It's one thing to "know" something, but a completely different thing to "teach" it to others. And Scott Devine does it masterfully. He is really really talented at getting his message across, better than anyone else I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you for the videos, God bless you Scott.

Addendum... not ironic at all... even considering to enter online Academy ;-)
Ive seen his band way of the groove many times. Here in south florida. Him and his bro are phenomenal musicians
Scott, I've been playing guitar for 5 years and after 4 months of playing bass I'm now a better bassist - that's partly due to you. Many thanks.
More guy in this industry must watch the way you explain all of this clearly. Really love that!
One incredible bassist who uses this technique is Ricardinho Paraíso from Brazil. You should check his playing!
Great Lesson. Love the Ibanez GW-35. I took the ramp off of mine.
I thought i heard fretless then I realized you have Gary Willis bass. GWB 35. Awesome fretless bass. Lots of bang for the buck.
It sounds wonderful!
Now you tell me that I did it wrong all my life 😣 I do that exact technique but its middle index middle middle index middle middle. One thing is for sure mate. You are by far the best teacher out there. Really love watching yer vids even though I play upright mainly. Love yer guts!
04:29 I was just thinking of that. Some wizardry this must be, Scotty
I just wanna say that you Scott had a lesson basically saying stay away from economy picking. The lesson involved playing C major scale arpeggios up and down. I’m almost positive you stated that alternate picking slows you down, and to always alternate
The best bass playing technic lesson i’ve ever seen before!Thank you Scott!
0:32-0:35 wow, just like his father... Felix truly is a monster player.
I saw your original video which used alternate ascending and raking descending on the Cmaj scale with one-note turn-arounds on both ends. It works really good on the riff of Come on come over! Tks!!!
nice fretless and playing, great settings and sound! round wounds? love playing this base and the GWB1. Great idea! the (aware) switching opens up worlds of new rhythmic patterns.

Hey scott that black fretless is the Gary Willis ibanez they've been making those forever and a d as y they are really cool
It is amazing while watching your videos. It's like being right in front of you having a conversation. It is almost like having personal bass classes. But for free :D

Scott's instruction is always great, on every level. luv luv
You need to get another Pastorious in there. David Pastorious. That dude is a monster!
So much great content! I started as a guitar player but the way I obsess over bass is a clear sign to me that perhaps I missed my calling, lol. Can't wait to get a bass and start applying all the knowledge soon!
Saw Felix with Jazz is Phish not long ago and I'm going to see them again at the Rochester International Jazz Fest going on now
It's really natural movement. Index and middle finger, just depends which finger is the last one before descending.
So all i have to do is buy a Fodera and start shredding 😂
Fedora
Yep....that's it.....
@@johnnyfreeman1018 He got it
@@dotnineteen.1962
No. It is Fodera.
Haha. I was the "oh I do that" guy. Glad I stuck to the end.
Hey Scott ! You forgot to mention another amazing bass player beside Anthony Jackson, Felix Pastorius ,Richard Bona and Hadrien Féraud : Scott Devine !!!
Thanks Scott I really appreciate it!
Best bass teacher ever👐🎸
That Arnie shirt is awesome
Me too, and I recently realised that on 3 note per string scales I use three fingers when going up, economy when going down, and a one-finger or three-finger sweep for fast arpeggios.
Ska-dap. Bap-bap-ba. "You gotta put it in the pot if you want it to cook." Oops. Sorry. All that awesome bass playing transported me to another dimension.
This is the best I have seen/heard you play
double rake in 3s & triplets my brethren (for instance on an arpeggio across 3 strings)
Surrounded by Fodera basses and Scott breaks out the Ibanez! just proves (player + good technique > expensive bass)
badass G.Willis signature!!
Are you playing with a subtle phaser effect on?
how do You do the vibrato? If I do Your finger movement it happens nearly nothing.
Man! Where to get the audio of this session? The BAnd is just amazing!
Super cool lesson right there, Scott!
They all have the same Fodera 6 string bass. You should've continued the trend!
That engine/steering analogy is spot on. Love it! Also, that's a sexy Ibanez. Never seen you with an Ibby before, Scott.
yeeaahBUDDY I believe it is a Gary Willis signature bass. That may be why.
Yah, never thought of that analogy before, but it's now part of my brain's CPU.
I always used racking on both fingaz. For me its just natural. but not that fast.
@1:27 what song are they playing?
Ok I definitely got to try this... I always wondered how they were doing that!
Where did that bass come from?
Would really like to see a video where you talk about all the basses you own!
Elias Skeidsvoll It's an Ibanez GWB35, a Garry Willis signature bass.
Samuel Hodgkinson of course it is!!:D
But i was actually asking when Scott got the bass, and if it is his own etc...
Elias Skeidsvoll Oh I see, yeah I second that idea. Would be very interesting to see the collection!
I wonder if Scot borrowed it from someone, or he's added another bass to his ever growing herd of basses... ;-)
Would be fun to hear which one
Oh shit I didn't even know that was a technique haha. I've been doing that since I started, maybe not as good as these AWESOME people though! Great video Scott, appreciate your content allot, it's really helped me switch my mindset from guitar player to bass player when i need too!
Awesome video!
Also, I think Vic does raking with both fingers too, but I might be mistaken.
Where is my PDF? Plenty of other emails but no PDF?
He's Incredible ❤️
Anybody know what kind of effects pedal Scott's using here? Thanks
Yo !
what could be the same exercice with Garry Willis right hand technique ?
i'm studying this technique since 2 years now and I'm really starting to feel it. But I must say I racking with my index finger most of the time ...
Peace, Love and BASS !
Flip
Scott, what is the bass you are using?
Picken' chickin'🥳 great video! 🙋🏻♂️❤️
Frank Gambale had a similar picking style for guitar back in the 80’s.
Thank you for sharing this kind of tips !
What's up with the tuners on that bass?
Christian Galvez is a bassist from Chile. Is very very fast.
hey Scott I use a 3 finger techniche and been using it for many years now. Should I abandon my technique or should I just incorpore this one to the catalog??
Are you endorsing Super Dry now?
Same as Alain Caron for sure also!!...
Glad I’m part of your academy.. awesome video as usual.. is that a fretless Ibanez?. Sounds cool
Yeah, it is a fretless
Yo Scott! I got to the shed immediately after this vid! What song did they played ? 1.21
"Now when you hit that top note, on the g-string. If you follow the correct fingering" I'm dead that's funny as hell LOL!!! Sorry bout the joke lol love your vids!
Great lesson! Shredding is fun.
Legit didn't know that this was a proper technique
I thought I was just cutting corners for slack
Is that a fretless bass?
Sounds like one though I can see the frets
Another great one Sean
please do lesson on triad pairs
Hey Scott, how did you get such a Jaco sound?! Bass, pedals, amp, equalization?
Heya Scott - does that PDF link still work? I dont seem to have any success with it. Cheers...
The ooda finger?
how can I get your tone in this vid, Scott?
I feeling the same feeling as when i found out about sweep picking on guitar lol im just like daaaamn
When will we see the Felix and Mike course?
Scott, I use free stroke primarily but I’m working on raking now. When you made the change did you have to raise your action? I’m getting a lot of banging and noise when I rake. Lighter touch?
Make sure your driving the strings more parallel to the bass, and not into it.
Hi Scott, great little video - as usual!! Can you tell me how you seem to get such a great fretless sound - like - I have the same bass and would love to know the strings you used here?? The sound a little lighter than the usual 45-130

*Edit - just realized this is 5y old and hope you figured it out man 😂
Not sure what string gauge he is using here, but I've been using .45 - .128 and liking it
What the model of this ibanez? So fretty sound
Virtuoz Ed GWB35 :) gary willis signature, I believe the black one is the cheaper version
Thank you ! Yea, actually the black one would be enough for me :)
Felix is a beast
Woah yeah those basses are nice i live fodera but for the cost of those 2 basses like 30-40k you could buy a pretty nice car new off the lot man
Yeah, i do this sometimes :D Other times I use pick :D
We call it moonwalking. Happens naturally for most I would imagine...
You might have explained this in another video but why the glove?
I can do it with the middle finger?
Scott, what do you think of the Ibanez? I haven’t seen you play one before. I had an SR400 for a long time that I sold and I wish I had not.
I wish a local music shop carried these Gary Willis basses. Would love to try one.
GREAT VIDEO! Thank u!!
Scott on an Ibanez???
pdf link doesn't work anymore
