Best quiver killer I’ve ever ridden was a 5’ 10” tuflite Donald Takayama scorpion 1 set up as a twin with trailers. Put it on rail, ride the barrel, hang 5, cutbacks, etc. I didn’t get off of it for 3 years or so til it broke in half.

I’ve had a RNF 96 light speed 5’4 for 2 years and it’s become my favorite board ever. Ive slowly thinned out my quiver because my instinct is to grab this board first in any condition cus it’s so fun. Makes me feel like a way better surfer than I actually am

I had a hip surgery too. Massive. I broke it in high tide back washy big waves at about age 52 on badly timed down carve at 220lbs. Now I’m 59 and 190lbs and can surf like a grom on my rocket wide twin w trailer. I recommend Ben Patterson! Especially walking backwards uphill on the hills you skateboard down. Feels killer and gives you new legs from ankle to knee to hip flexor.

The Webber shaped afterburner model absolutely checked all the boxes any of these boards can and it was in production like 20 years ago. That board was way ahead of its time. It was a true 1 board quiver. Fro 2-3 all the way to double overhead that board just killed it.

I have a sea side and really like it as a summer board. It’s fast and get for sloppy waves. I do find that more than any other board I have it has a wave size limit. As soon as the waves get some power and size to it just can’t hold and your flying down the line at 700mph. Ive skipped out on many a bottom turn trying to keep this thing together in the bigger stuff. Of all the boards you have here I feel this one is really the little wave specialist.

I have a Sea side that I’m probably riding a liter and a half too big, but I use it in smaller waves or when it’s less steep. It’s a rocket in knee high and below. It also handles in overhead surf, but is sometimes too fast, and yes, it likes a specific angled approach. Not amazing too to bottom. I have 3 96’s and I surf them in faster, steeper waves. I surf it when it’s small too, but it doesn’t grovel as well for me in mush. Maybe I’ll have to pull my baby trailer when I’m in small surf? It still surf great but it handles better in better waves for me; it can do no wrong. Beautiful rail to rail, top to bottom, and the nose doesn’t catch often.

Great shootout! Just an observation, in smaller waves you look the best on the Seaside and the Podmod. They both just look so fun and loose off the top on small faces and tight turns. most fun to watch anyways, lol. You look great on the other three in bigger waves, the RNF looks super fun with larger steeper faces, and it seems some of the bigger steeper waves of the test were ridden while on the RNF.

I personally owned a SS in the past but sell it because of low "paddling" ability forcing me to always surf at the inside and let the "bombs" to others. Yes, I’ve ridden boards like the CI DFR with roughly 29L (2-3L more) than I usually ride but it paddles horribly and it has very little glide. The DFR has a lot of rocker from what I can remember…. It’s a true HPSB but it’s a perfect example of more foam does not always equal more glide or better paddling.

My current surfboard is 6.2 Eric Arakawa 34.5L(width 20" and 2.63 thickness). I am looking for a fun board that is easy to paddle when the waves are shoulder-high. the libtech 5'9 rnf(20.8" width, 2.6" thickness) has 35L and 5'11 38.3L(21.3" and 2.7" thickness), it might be good to have a bit more volume to paddle easier but at the same time, i am afraid of "over sizing" the board... i have never surfed a board shorter then 5’11 and i am afraid the 5’9 would be too short. To get my volume right is a 5.3, 5.4... better to not mess with lowering the volume on a 5.8th. I guess too much of a difference ...

Great review as always. This series were specially enlightning. I have 2 doubts/questions wich I´m sure you can aswer. My first question is: are the considerations, regarding the RNF 96, also valid for the Black Sheep (BS) construction? I ask this because in the video footage and "speech" there are only mentions to the PU and EPS constructions but the board showned in the board room is, aparrently, BS. The other question: my daily board is a Sharpeye Modern 2 in EPS, wich i love, but sometimes, especially in hollower and overhead waves, lacks performance (beside my own). Is the RNF 96 in BS, or other construction, a good "complement" to the Modern 2 or are the boards too similar? If not what board (hybrid or semi-hybrid) do you recommend?

The 96 in Black Sheep is just eye candy in this episode because I hadn’t ridden it yet. All the footage of the 96 used in this board comparison was in Lightspeed and PU/Poly.
I think the 96 is a great complement to your SharpEye. I suggest getting the 96 in PU/Poly and use it for bigger/better waves for performance surfing.

Great review, this is awesome! I wonder more specifically how size might affect the final rating. For example, in my case being 6'1" at 175 int./Adv, how the scores would change for riding beach breaks or mushy fast waves. The small sizes for some of there are great if they can get down to the low 5's for length, but for a 5'10" 0r 6' board, which one do you think would win out?
Also, wave catching ability could be another category. Thanks man, like I said, great stuff and greatly appreciate your work.

For taller guys the BV2 would take the win with more rail line. On the other hand for shorter guys the 96 takes the win out of strength performance in a shorter package.
I tried to make that clear in this episode for you taller surfers.
All 5 boards paddle great…. I think the BV2 carries the most speed and glide so it wins in padding too.

Hey Noel, great work. Love your reviews! Is it possible to oversize the RNF? I'm 5,9, and 85 kg. I bought a 5'8 RNF 15 years ago, kept it, and recently passed it on to my son :-) I loved the board back then, but the old version carries little volume and is way too small for me now and the waves I get to surf at my homebreak. I've been riding a mid-length lately and love the glide and forgiveness. I was thinking about getting a 6'1 RNF as my one-board quiver and for traveling. I'm 46, in decent shape, and an intermediate surfer, but the local waves only allow me to shortboard 1-2 times a month (I mainly longboard). I've also been thinking about the seaside (5'10), but the RNF seems like a better board for my needs. Agree? Thanks again!

Long time listener first time caller… your videos are the best. Over the years I’ve picked up a Seaside and a Monstabox after watching your reviews. I’ve moved off the Seaside and my next board was going to be a Mash-up after your shootout between Seaside, Mash-up, and Dominator, but after watching this I’m now gonna go Lost RNF 96… wondered if you think that’s the right call. I love twins and hybrid outlines… Im a fishy kind of cruisey style surfer. Wanted a board that would go good in small surf as a twin, but also be able to handle bigger surf with a thruster setup. Also, fwiw, I still have my Machado quad fins that would work with the Mash-up which would save me a few $$$. Not a major reason to go Mash-up but still not nothing either. Would be awesome to get your thoughts. Thank you!

    • @davidmoore8397
      @davidmoore8397 2 роки тому +4

I can say from my experience that the RNF would be the most versatile board of them all. I had the Seaside at first, too much of a small wave board for me, then had the MR Cali twin, which was amazing, but only if you don't go too big otherwise it has too much foam. Then had the Mash-up, which I thought would be my ultimate small wave board. It went amazing in small clean down the line waves, but not so well in junkier less pushy waves, and also I think the fins are set too far up the board, making it too loose and hard to control.
Then, after watching Mason Ho surf the RNF in literally every kind of surf, I grabbed one, and couldn't believe how much speed and flow, and forgiveness it had straight away. The RNF is the real deal.
I think the Mash-up is more hype, with Rob Machado demoing it, as he makes every board look fast and smooth and almost the perfect board. I've watched vids of regular guys surfing them and they don't look that great to me.
      Just my experience YMMV .

Hi Noel, great review as always. I’m looking for something in between a small wave HP board and a groveler for 1-4’ waves. I’m guessing that’s what this hybrid category is for. I want something that has groveler capabilities, but the super short, extra wide stubbiness of a “true” groveler just does not suit me well. Preferring a touch longer board with more rail line for better glide while paddling. A few that come to mind that meet my ideal length and volume combination (6’2” and about 37.5-38.5 L) are the Lost Puddlejumper Pro, Lost Puddlejumper HP, Firewire Dominator 2, Firewire Mashup, Aipa Dark Twinn, Lost Swordfish. and Hypto Krypto.
